New desktop specs

Post » Sat Feb 22, 2014 2:06 pm

I had a local computer company come up with a custom gaming desktop, anyway I'm too impatient to wait for replays in the other thread so I'm making a different one. Here is what they came up with, please let me know what y'all think, thanks

Intel Core I7 3.7ghz (Fastest processor on the market)

16gb DDR3 Memory

120gb Solid State main hard drive (Fast)

2TB secondary hard drive for storage

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 770 Video Card

800w Power Supply

24x dual layer dvd burner rom

7.1 Channel Sound

1gb network card

Windows 8.1 64 Bit O/S

Cooler-master storm scout 2 - mid tower gaming case

Liquid Cooling

Dual bay touch screen fan controls

this machine will run very fast! with a bunch of cool options for cooling!

picture attached!

let me know what you think

thanks,
Mark

looks legit. Whatever they do on their end to the computer though is a different story.

You've got a SSD, in my experience, it's way faster

You have plenty of RAM

I don't know that much about video cards though, but I'm pretty sure you could run the game on full graphics with that.

Ah yeah he can, i have an nvidia gtx 670 overclocked (ftw) ASUS. that runs it on ultra/high settings and more, his rig will be an overkill basically. I just worry about what the builders of the computer implement in the computer, ive heard companies really downsizing specs in the settings and pushing the price up for non-computer builders.

SSD's are awesome, much faster than a H.D. problem is they're 20x more expensive for less space. I just went i think with a 1tb hd, but if you can afford it, heck yeah!

If you can build it yourself, you'll save a ton of cash and also become familiar with the hardware and software so that you are less likely to find yourself in an "OMG, NOOOO" situation without having any idea what is going on should anything go wrong or need fixing/maintenance at any point.

The build as others have said is overkill for this game (but presumably you want to play other games on it, and looking to the future is no bad thing), and 16Gb RAM is overkill for any game, but other stuff you do on your PC may well make that a worthwhile and/or needed investment, and RAM is one of the cheaper components anyway so having more than you need is unlikely to put you seriously out of pocket.

But yeah that's not too dissimilar from my current build (apart from I have less RAM) and I can run ESO beta on the highest settings. Oh and I also have Win 7 because I dislike Win 8 on desktops - personal preference.

i7 processors are great

16GB of ram is pretty overkill, you really don't need any more then 8GB, but if it's not much of a price difference then no big deal

770s are one of the better video cards. You'd have no issue running games at max. I have a 660 and it runs ESO on the highest settings without issue, and 770s are quite a bit better then 660s

It'd be a good computer for sure, what about the price for it?

Thanks for the advice.
I asked for the best stuff out there so glad to hear it is. This desktop will strictly be for gaming, I have a laptop for anything else and my handy ipizzlepaad.

Would you get an ingame benefit for using an SSD?

16gig is over kill or not quite enough I am running 32gig with a ram drive setup. Its an okay rig as long as they used the right MB and left you overhead for upgrades.

A little light on the ram for that much computer, otherwise it's solid. Assuming it's not el-cheapo versions of some of it. The graphics card in particular the brand matters a great deal as specs on GeForce cards can alter pretty drastically maker to maker. One might use DDR3 and another DDR5 for example.

Bear in mind that I highly doubt ESO will be the only game Troublz will be playing in the lifetime of his/her new PC. I have an SSD and it's absolutely bloody amazing - not necessary, but once you've had one it's hard to go back to having your OS on a mechanical drive. A 120Gb drive also gives a bit of space to install a few favourite games, and yes when you do that it can make a vast difference in terms of loading times. Even in ESO - don't forget all the files including textures etc. are stored and loaded from the hard drive on your PC, not from the server. Even if you don't put games on it, boot up speed is massively shortened with an SSD, it has utility beyond gaming.

Yes, I'm playing SWTOR, it's installed on a SSD and I always have to wait after my teammates when there is a zone to load.

I just install my games on the SSD and everything else on a normal hard drive.

They quoted me at $2500. I know it's not cheap but I'm not a penny counter either so unless the price is off by a god awful amount I'm fine with it

my rig was also 2500, built myself. but i have lower specs than you.

nvidia gtx 670 ftw

850w ps

16gigs ram

windows 7

mmo keyboard logitech, macro keys

mmo mouse razer deathadder

sabertooth z77 asus motherboard

atx full tower case, all kinds of lighting.

1tb hd drive.

that is a rough guesstimate of my rig, i think thats it, oh and my monitor, which is like : hanns led or something i cant remember. or lcd, who knows. All i know is that cost me around 2500 from new egg, was my first build. and it runs everything easy, newer games just as easy and its not even close to being overclocked.

to be fair i also purchased video games with it and a new computer desk, mouse, keyboard, everything for a brand new full computer. so all in all maybe 1500-2k for my build.

Your computer will make consoles pee panties just like mine > : )

or you can buy this set up for 2300

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1543455

If you were to buy the components they are going to use to build the rig yourself you would save quite a bit. and you could get windows 7 instead.

What Mobo are you getting? Also I would go for more than 800W PSU so you will have the option to SLI or Crossfire in the future.

I actually asked them to put windows 7 instead and they said that it wouldn't be a problem, and I have no idea how to build this for myself and have no desire to try and learn it all much less learn it all before ESO launch

Its like a lego set. Only easier things only go in one way. Hell the MB even comes with a book w/pictures telling you what goes where. Hardest part is that damn shield on the back, worse than a paper cut

I appreciate your point of view, but it is a lot less complicated that most people think. If you ever slotted things together (making a lego kit, or a mecchano kit) as a kid, then building a PC is not much different. Pretty much it's just a case of putting things in the correct slot (and all the slots are different sizes, so little risk of slotting something in the wrong place) and doing up a few screws - then putting the OS disk in the DVD tray and waiting until it is installed. People who know what they are doing can do a build in around an hour, and even beginners checking the instructions at every stage it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours. It's made out to be some sort of arcane art, when really most 12 year olds with a bit of intelligence and a set of instructions would be able to manage it.

Y'all are making me want to try it, stop!!! It does sound easy but I think I'll get this one built and maybe try and build a practice one in my free time.

I did a quick cart check on tigerdirect with most of the parts, I don't know the brands used or the motherboard so the price can vary, but it's probably around $2000 in parts

That's a good plan, if you can afford it! Yeah definitely worth doing if you have an older PC you can take apart and put back together again to see how it all fits together- once you've managed it the first time it's far less intimidating. :)
