100 hours is a bit excessive. The main quest will probably take you 15-20 hours depending on how many side quests you do.

100 hours is a bit excessive. The main quest will probably take you 15-20 hours depending on how many side quests you do.

It also depends on how many gates you close in the process. My first play-through I didn't fully commit myself to Crisis, seeing it as simply one of many decent quest-lines. I closed maybe twelve Gates before escorting Martin to the Imperial Palace. My second play-through, I totally committed myself to ridding Cyrodiil of Deadric intrusion. It was my moral obligation to close any and all gates situated near a roadway or habitated area. In the end I shut down 52 gates, and would terminated more had I chanced upon them during my travels. What's more, I took no shortcuts in the process. Yes, it got tedious at times. But the sense of accomplishment it gave more than compensated, and I have many fond gameplay memories that would not exist had I plowed through the Crisis.

In other words, the main quest is to some extent as long or short as you want to make it.

Oblivion is very different from many fantasy RPGs. It is not linear unless you want it to be. That is, although there is a main quest and the game will guide you through the long and ho hum process of saving the world like most games, the game is designed to superbly support 'sand box' play, where your character simply lives their life in the beatiful but dangerous province of Cyrodiil. There are loads of side quests. There are hundreds of dungeons and if you stay out of them for a few days, new foes will move right back in so you can never exhaust dungeon crawling. Same with traveling; if you go from A to B, then a few days later, there will be new soldiers and foes along your route if you retrace your path. There is no reason to do the main (or any other) quest unless you want to. Enemies level up as you do, so you don't necessarily get more godlike as you level up. The game is somewhat complex, but as with many things: 'If you learn the system, it will set you free'.

If you just want to play fairly straightforwardly through the Main Quest, doing a few side quests along the way as you encounter them, I think you will find it a fine game. When you read some of us talking about how great it is and playing it for thousands of hours, we are often talking about seriously roleplaying and generally more in the 'sand box' mode.

Save your game frequently, and enjoy.

Is your avatar Pirotess, from Record of Lodoss War? I know it is very dated, but I have a soft spot for that anime. (Looks at your screen name... Nevermind...)

Like the others have said, Elder Scrolls games are not linear, with a start and and end. It goes on for as long as you want it to. That is one of the things I like best about them. I am the same way about dark elves! They are usually the first race I try in a fantasy game. I just like how they look. You will find they are quite powerful in Oblivion. With decent starting stats, and a rather impressive 75% resistance to fire (which helps a great deal if you do the Main Quest, as it has a lot of fire-using enemies).

Anti Shape is right, look at his sig. There is no "right" way to play Oblivion, YOU and I repeat, YOU decide what happens in the game. Look at it like this, when someone tells you something or something happens, what is YOUR response? Happy gaming :)

I'm just gonna quote Acadian's post, since this is probably the best advice someone can give about playing Oblivion.

the main problem with oblivon is you have to understand how the game works to have a decent character or enjoy it . A big flaw with the game . Once i started again with a few mods i loved it , i cant stand the levelling system it svcks all the fun out the game and becomes a grind . I love the little mod that lets you level up your +5's without caring about what skills you use , this made the game go from average to excellent for me. I have 3 characters all with 40+ hours play and never really bothered with the main quest , i love exploring and doing the guild quests.

Go ahead and grab Oblivion but get it for the PC. There are a few gameplay features that may or may not get under your skin. If they do, come back and we'll show you how to fix them with mods :toughninja:

Basically, it's simple. There's only ONE thing that you absolutely HAVE to do in any TES game...

...and that's to NOT rush it.
I've heard some people doing the main quest quickly, then quickly getting bored of the game.
But most people here, including me, take their time, explore everything possible to explore, actually "live" their characters, and play the game mostly for the "alive" feel it gives you.
Remember, it's not Diablo: you don't play it just to level your character and gain better loot
it's not FF: The storyline isn't the main focus, and it doesn't limit you in any way
And also, don't be surprised if you can go everywhere without feeling a major threat, or if you don't find any good equipment for a while: the game levels with you, and you'll never see the toughest/best stuff unless you get to level 25 first... but then again, it's not a race. Believe me the game DOES get tougher as you level

Also, Welcome to Cyrodill!

(oh and BTW, your skill doesn't matter at all lol. there's actually a difficulty slider in the options, and anyways even if you die often, who cares? you play it for yourself. I don't think I ever heard anyone brag about how godly they were in a TES game lol)
