New Elder Scrolls Novels

Does anyone know exactly how "Tamriel" translates to "Dawn's Beauty?" (Or "Starry Heart," whichever is more applicable.) I know it seems like an irrelevant question, but I want to be sure what the "-riel" bit means in the name "Umbriel." Unless it was just chosen for sounding appropriately TES-ish.

Tamri-El can be found in places. Given that Pelin-El means 'Star-Made Knight,' that would likely be Starry Heart.

They meant plurality.

And spoiler tag me the end of the Briar King series. I never got past Charnel Prince.

I did tag it. At least I'm pretty sure I did.

Maybe "Umbriel" is subliminal messaging, that TES V will use the Umbra occluder middleware (and/or have Umbra the NPC and sword return)?

I hope they do. Not because graphics are that important to me, but I'm worried half the forum will die of coronaries if they don't. and I like you people.

Well, think of it. "Iel" either means one of four things: starry, heart, dawn, beauty, and could be a different tense or whatever. we don't know how aldmeris/Ehlonfex syntax works, but since keyes is a linguist he may decide to work it out. Now, realizing that Umbra was a sword steeped in the lore and magic of souls, becoming one with, then devouring, the soul of it's wielder as well as any slain by it. So "Umbr" likely means something to do with Undead, with "iel" meaning any of the four. Work it out. It could even mean "soul's beauty." Or, what I think is the most likely for this style: Night's beauty, as a counterpoint to Tamriel the living world,

I must say I'm surprised by the cover. It looks much better than I was expecting. Although, like others have said, "don't judge a book by its cover."

Well, since you finished the earliest T&B book (and I highly reccomend the rest) you may or may not remember the tricks he'd pull with words. For example, two languages with simmilar-sounding words that mean vastly different things. Like how Amazon means "without briast" in ancient greek, but to the actual amazons it meant something else. Likely it means a differnt thing in Aldmeris and Ehlonfex.

PS: Don't use web lingo on me, Paws. See what happens when you do? You just confuse me hopelessly. And read them the long way, it's well worth it.

So, in this case Ubri-El seems to be somthing like "Star Shadow"?
Or, according to UESP, "-El" is "A title used to show holy/important significance, and/or god-like status (Used in a name, like a compound word, except that the "El" is separated by a hyphen. The El can be used as a prefix, or a sufix, but it must always be hyphenated, and the "E" must always be a capital.)".

I prefer it would be Umbra'Keth.

For those unbeknowest, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345508017/ref=s9_simz_gw_s0_p14_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0KYPZ0A1XYHKB88TDV2F&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 has been released. Lookes fairly sixy, the buildings atop the rock seem (to me, at least) Dwemeri in appearance.

shiny I'm going to lick the cover when I get it!

The building architecture does seem odd, or perhaps 'advanced' is a better term. It only has very vague similarities to the Dwemer. It honestly looks more space-age/futuristic than it does anything else - lots of saucer type shapes, especially the tower in the middle left, which looks almost exactly like the Seattle Space Needle.

The river and the water pouring off suggests it was previously an aquatic city, as do the odd vine-like plants rising up around the buildings (which look like they could work underwater). Perhaps a dreugh or Maomer city? I have to say, using the Maomer would be a good move for him given that there's no real lore there to conflict with, and their king is an undying wizard so the undead thing does have a place as well...

Never heard of Greg Keyes before now (don't know how, I'm a regular at the library) and now I can't put his throne & bone saga (I'm sorry, but I'm not a big fan of Star lols, so I gave those books a pass). He's a great author, worthy of the TES series. As long as he doesn't put it in any of the games (especially Morrowind) I think he'll do a fine job of writing it.

Elves are wonderful. Literally. Wonder-Full. Giant Prawns are NOT elves . .. giant prawns are disgusting. . . execpt when properly steamed and spiced, or steamed and served in a light bisque sauce.

Only one building reminds me of Almalexia, I'm still going with Maomer...

The Maomer would be a good move.

If its of any interest, Umbriel is the name of a nome from the [censored] of the Lock, a story crawling with inuendo. He's a spirit who ventures into the Cavern of Spleen to pull out a vial of tears, and a sack of boo hoos, when a lock of the woman's hair is snipped off and she needs to feel remorse. Heh, Umbriel's returned with a vengence on the woman, it seems.

I hadn't thought about Maomer. And now that you guys have, I'm thinking abiut it and it seems increasingly good.

Here's the issue books have that games don't. When we were speculating about Oblivion, we could speculate about gameplay, graphics, story, any of that. So you wouldn't be constantly building one thing up higher and higher, you'd even it out. With the books, really we can only speculate on the story, so it's hard not to set the bar even more impossibly hi9gh than we usually do.

I'm in a mean-spirited mood, so I'm going to point out that after viewing the Infernal City page, most customers bought a Gears of War novel.

All I can say is that after reading halfway through Keyes' series "The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone", he's no "Gears of War" novelization hack. The Amazon description of the Infernal City novel sounds similar to Keyes' earlier writing -- a group of mismatched adventurers who have more depth than the LOTR cliches you see.

Gears of War novelisation hack?! :o

That's Karen Traviss you're speaking about! How very dare ye.

(Admittedly I haven't read those books of hers, but still... Ootrajous)

Has anyone thought of an Elder scrolls book that is a make your own adventure.
'A Dark brotherhood agent visits you and tells you to kill someone.'
Do as he says-Turn to page 9
Run away-Turn to page 67
Say yes but report him to the watch-Turn to page 125

I say leave interactivity to the games, let the books be books. Choose your own adventure books really don't need to exist for TES since the games work that way only better.
