New Elder Scrolls Novels thread #5

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:32 am

If he is telling the truth, it's strange to think that our player characters/RP characters will be long dead by the time of TES V, except for the mer. I know we can always roll up new characters, but those of us who have roleplayed in the past have characters that we kept alive during the events of "Morrowind" and "Oblivion".

The timeline sounds reasonable overall. While I wouldn't say Oblivion "butchered" the lore, there are a number of issues with it. For just one example, the Imperial Cult is bland compared to what I've heard Daggerfall was like -- now you have a single model of Gothic cathedral that's supposed to suffice for all the Nine, instead of having a Dibellan temple, for one.

Yes, for my many cross game RPs, its gone from, at 40 years, "Turn-The-Page will be dead" to, at 200 years, "everyone but Idredhel the surly magelord is dead". I guess we could do some interesting time travel stories. A fish truly out of water.

As for the lore issues, it will be irritating to miss out on the awesomeness that may or may not happen after the fall of the Septims, as well as a complete change to some places and politics. Though Maiq had better still be in it.

It just feels like they're skipping the interesting stuff for another "OMG TEH UBERZ" story. I guess we'll have to see how it pans out.

Oh, and this will mean either Grappa wins an internet for breaking the info years early, or he's a lying scum who will never be allowed to show his face here again. :ahhh: We have two months to wait.

Cool!

Wow, that cover is pretty generic. Doesn't really shout "TES" at me. Not at all, in fact. At least it's not too expensive. This is the first time I've ever looked forward to a novel, I might just pre-order it.

The time line for the next game would make sense, though, considering the book is set further into the future as well.

Sorry, I don't believe some random poster that they have the book already. *shrug* You could be telling the truth, but who knows. I could say that I'm Winnie-the-Pooh but that doesn't make it true (and as far as I know, Pooh wasn't a poet anyway).

They're all over ebay. I've half a mind to find a cheap copy for myself.

Sorry for the double post, but it's been several hours and I have something to say.

It's only a shout-out because the devs know we know what the cover looks like, but the bethesda Blog has the cover art on it now, mostly as a shout out of "we haven't forgotten you, TES folk."

$15 is a bit expensive when I can buy a Terry Pratchett book of the same length for a fiver.

Yeah, but Terry Pratchett books have been in print for years (most of them, anyway). I know that the few I got as Christmas gifts hot off the press were anything between ?12-18 a throw for a newly minted hardback, so that works out.

I hope they have it in hardback, especially if it's a good book.

When I preordered it today on Amazon, it was $ 9.50 before shipping.

We'll have a book club on this thread before we're done. I'll have the coffee instead of the Earl Grey tea, though.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I guess I don't like paying so much for what is essentially a paperback book by a guy I'ven never heard of before.

How does the author write? Does he write in English where everyone can understand? I am having a hard reading "The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore" and have to read paragraphs a few times.

He writes well in my opinion. I'm only halfway through the four-book series "The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone", but the books are page-turners. He uses characters that could have been cliches (a ranger, a willful princess, a paladin) but isn't a hack.

A nightmare?

Just because you understand salvatore doesn't mean this author writes like him, also I trust syronj's comment.

Edit: I went to Amazon to peek in one of his book (Greg Keyes) and from what I read is way understandable than Salvatore's writing to me.
EDIT: I still want more opinions (thats if you want to give me).

what little i've read of salvatore is a lot easier to understand than what little i've read of keyes. i don't know in what context you're asking though (easy for native speakers? easy as a second language?) so hey.

if you mean is he OVERWRITTEN PRETENTIOUS GARBAGE then no not really, from what i've seen anyway.

No, not garbage.
EDIT: Since I can't explain better, then forget it then. I will figure it out when the book comes out.

EDIT: I came back to explain what I mean and I can't come up with a better explanation.

Thanks syronj.

Is it possible to pre-order it in Finland? I want to know.

I'm really interested in the story, seriously.
