Well I must say the news of a new engine is somewhat of a double-edged sword. It's great news because it means there will be some serious technological advances in Skyrim (graphics, physics, combat, etc). However, it could be potentially bad because this game will more or less be the pioneer of the new system just like Oblivion was (I believe I remember reading a quote somewhere that Bethesda likes to test out new technology on their games, before anyone else in case it doesn't work out). Bethesda would have known the ends and outs of their old engine, which would have made for a faster and more polished experience. But with a new engine, it will definitely be raising the bar from Oblivion, but it also means the risk Bethesda is taking is greater, and there could be issues with the final product. Overall, this was probably the best decision Bethesda could make. The transition between Morrowind to Oblivion was humongous. Considering many new fans of TES were added with Oblivion, expectations and hype will undoubtedly be high, so Bethesda will need to deliver. One advantage Bethesda will have with Skyrim over Oblivion is they at least have at least they have probably had the new hardware from the beginning unlike Oblivion.

Kind of weird, but I remember the same sort of thing happening with Oblivion. For some reason, foreign (and foreign-language) publications always seem to get the first scoop on Bethesda games.

Well, as rabish12 said - if Beth have access to ID then they may well avoid the same mistakes they made with Oblivion and Fallout 3....

But we will not know for some time.

Yes, the familiarity with the new engine is going to be something in of itself, and will reflect in their game for sure. Hopefully John has given them a few pointers.

However, my number one concern is how this will impact the modding scene. We'll have to see how it goes.

Hellz ya, I was worried that the game might feel the same as Oblivion like Fallout 3 did. This is good news now it will definitely feel like a full fledge Elder Scrolls sequel. :celebration:

The marketing machine, at its most efficient, keeps you rabid, keeps you hungry for more, while still satiating your appetite just enough that at the end of each new reveal, you're excited and giddy and sharing that new information with everyone instead of blaming the machine for starving you of new info.

Call me jaded, but this just causes me to lose interest. I see a nearly content-free teaser that says 11-11-11 today, and I think, "Fine, I guess I have a year to play other games and forget about it."

You guys do realize that Oblivion was made using an upgraded Morrowind engine?

As a programmer myself, you do not throw away old code. You keep it and upgrade it. And believe me, upgrading something just a small bit can make a world of difference.

Edit: And no, the engine is only "new" in that its upgraded. Its not actually a totally new, out of the box engine. We already know that.

Considering Dragon Age: Origins from Bioware ran on a heavily upgraded Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic engine, I believe you're absolutely right.

If we're speaking in terms of Elder Scrolls games, waiting under a year is a piece of cake. The wait was MUCH Longer for oblivion.

Not necessarily. We don't know exactly what that interview was addressing specifically. It was also done in August, so it's a possibility things changed since then. Either way, a new engine means new possibilities, and new challenges. I'm sure Bethesda will overcome, considering the issue with Oblivion was much more difficult (working on a next-gen game for 3 years without the actual hardware because next-gen isn't out yet is tough).

god please make the new engine as moddable as the last one. this (and the open world approach) is what made all those gamebryo games so special despite their many shortcomings and failings.

I think this is a lot of peoples concern. I know its mine :cryvaultboy:

This. We had to wait years before we saw any screen shots of Oblivion (they didn't have the actual hardware until the end of development). Plus with all the great games coming out next year (Dragon Age 2, SWTOR, Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Gears of War 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc) there will be enough to keep everyone satisfied until SKYRIM!!!

False. Already confirmed by several sources that it's an entirely new engine developed internally.

No we don't "already know that".

Bethesda stated that a "brand new" in-house engine has been developed for TES V.

Can someone with Twitter ask Pete or Bethblog what the name of the engine is? It would be interesting to see if it's something like a variation of Gamebryo or id Tech, or a completely new one. That would put to rest the speculation of whether or not it's completely revamped, or literally a new engine.

I also interpret "brand new" as in not gamebryo. dx11 PLX plus some nice modding tools, and im set!

Even if it was a revamped version of the GameByro engine - I really wouldn't mind at all. I'd just want to make sure that the game felt new and played smooth (as opposed to the poor character movement, pathing issues, texture-load issues, etc experienced thus far with Beth).
