Well I must say the news of a new engine is somewhat of a double-edged sword. It's great news because it means there will be some serious technological advances in Skyrim (graphics, physics, combat, etc). However, it could be potentially bad because this game will more or less be the pioneer of the new system just like Oblivion was (I believe I remember reading a quote somewhere that Bethesda likes to test out new technology on their games, before anyone else in case it doesn't work out). Bethesda would have known the ends and outs of their old engine, which would have made for a faster and more polished experience. But with a new engine, it will definitely be raising the bar from Oblivion, but it also means the risk Bethesda is taking is greater, and there could be issues with the final product. Overall, this was probably the best decision Bethesda could make. The transition between Morrowind to Oblivion was humongous. Considering many new fans of TES were added with Oblivion, expectations and hype will undoubtedly be high, so Bethesda will need to deliver. One advantage Bethesda will have with Skyrim over Oblivion is they at least have at least they have probably had the new hardware from the beginning unlike Oblivion.
