New Engine?

It's an all new graphics and gameplay engine internal to BGS, and it looks incredible

We can't wait to show you more

This all reminds me of people commenting on Valve's Source Engine.

Just because the engine name does not change, does not mean that the engine does not receive substantial updates and overhauls . . . .

Ohh God...

The Source Engine...

Arguably the worst engine ever made in my book. I'd rather play a game made on the 1988 pac-man engine.

Awesome. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Thank you, Gstaff, for this info!

I am very surprised. This could pose some serious problems for modding :/

I doubt Beth would remove moddability like that: it'll just take some getting used to the new tools, I reckon.

Seriously, the news that this is a new engine is like music to my ears.

Awesome to hear!

I would have been happy with GameBryo. Most people's complaints about it aren't even engine-related anyway (by which I mean people don't know what they're talking about.)

Regardless I'm [censored]ting myself with glee, can't wait to see what's to come with the new engine!

Totally off topic but why? It looked amazing for the time and didn't take a lot to run. My netbook can play Half-Life 2. Looking great and playing great are the 2 main components to a pretty badass engine in my opinion.

And yeah...new engine will look cool

Yeah, on one hand I'm excited to (be forced to) buy a new PC just in time for 11-11-11 but on the other hand I really want a successful mod community.

I'm sure BGS will accommodate accordingly; they have, and continue to support modding pretty heavily.

The CS will be no problem, I'm sure. What I'm worried about is modeling: .nif/.kf are Gamebryo formats, so we will need all new exporters for Max, Maya, and Blender, as well as a new Nifskope equivalent. Considering how long it took us to reverse engineer what we know about .nif, this could be a major step backwards.

On the other hand, this could remove some of the problems with releasing an official exporter

The only way it could pose a problem is if Bethesda actually goes out of their way not to support modding in it (very, very unlikely). This poses a hurdle for veteran modders who will have to get used to doing some things a little differently at worst.

EDIT: I really, really don't see proprietary formats being a problem. Again, Bethesda would have to more or less specifically go out of their way to prevent modders from being able to create those assets for it to create an issue - if they're using proprietary formats at all, they're guaranteed to already have exporters for them in-house.

I started a topic earlier regarding the engine issues.

It seems that a brand new engine has been announced:-

So maybe the mods can lock this topic too.

Such is the case of progress. Things can't stay the same. The modding community will just have to adapt and overcome as it has for years, seems like a pretty natural thing to me.

More than likely the new engine will use the CS as the basis; there is no way they forced their entire team to learn a new engine and creation tool as well.

Again: the engine change is a matter of 3D modeling, namely exporting it into the engine. If the file format changed we'll have to make a whole bunch of software from the ground up - unless bethesda releases their official versions. It will likely mean re-learning procedures either way.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see. The game was announced less than a day ago and I'm already worried about modding it

This shouldn't really be a major hurdle either. If Bethesda has any sense, scripting and modding for the new engine will be very similar to how it was in their prior games (pretty likely, given that the CS has always been a set of tools used in-house and is what their own employees are used to) or significantly different specifically as an attempt to make it easier/better.

See my last edit. Unless Bethesda tries to intentionally block this, a new proprietary engine isn't going to be an obstacle for it at all.

Listen, Gamebryo is just a rendering engine. Everything that does not have to do with graphics does not have to do with Gamebryo. Just to give you an idea on what I'm talking about, you know Zoo Tycoon II? That uses Gamebryo. Now, I don't know about you, but I never really found the gameplay in Zoo Tycoon to be similar to TES IV, or even Sid Meier's Pirates! because that is also a Gamebryo game. It doesn't matter if they use Gamebryo or not. As long as they update the physics and animation they use, you probably would never know the difference. Seriously, stop complaining about Gamebryo when you don't understand that it isn't responsible for anything but rendering graphics.

It has already been said, but they spent a significant time working on their engine. It will look great, and will be a significant improvement over Oblivion, just like Oblivion was a drastic improvement over Morrowind (which used the same engine, I believe).
