New Engine?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:30 am

It has already been confirmed it is running on a new engine. :brokencomputer:

Look at Miaximus's quote. It is truth.

I'm at my dining hall right now, so I'll wait till I get back to my dorm to dance around like an idiot.

It's an all new graphics and gameplay engine internal to BGS, and it looks incredible

We can't wait to show you more

Yes it was tweeted. :)

I'm not really surprised, the company that produced Gamebroyo is gone - liquidated. It wouldn't make sense to use an unsupported engine IMHO.

As far as modding cocnerns:

I pray bethesda gives us an editor again. It might be a bigger hurdle this time around because of the new engine, but I still think they'll do it.

Also, my guess is importing models/textures/animations/everything will only be a million times easier. Sure, we lose a lot of work that went into workarounds for modding things into the gamebryo engine, but the new engine might make tedious workarounds obsolete, it might be much more straight forward and user friendly.

That's what I'd hope anyway.

Just remember that the engine does not decide the story or game mechanics. It won't matter what engine they use if they decide to use Oblivion's barter interface. :) Luckily that one was fixed in Fallout 3, good going guys!

I'd like to see how combat works, hopefully it's not just a sword swinging around in front of your face, but also not a God Of War combat knock off.

Then show it already :celebration:

I wish they could too, but, if you look closely, they're being extremely methodical when it comes to releasing more information about Skyrim. They're on a strict marketing schedule now, and that (hopefully) means a slow, steady flow of facts over the next 11 months. One day will be the "let's finally show everyone how good it looks" day, another will be "the first gameplay trailer" day, another will be "let's show amazing, previously unannounced and unexpected feature X in action" day, etc.

The marketing machine, at its most efficient, keeps you rabid, keeps you hungry for more, while still satiating your appetite just enough that at the end of each new reveal, you're excited and giddy and sharing that new information with everyone instead of blaming the machine for starving you of new info. When done correctly (Bethesda in particular is very good at it), they accomplish two very important things, simultaneously: they keep their fans happy and interested, and they keep Skyrim's name at (or near) the forefront of the gaming discussion (because the fanbase, hardcoe and casual, just can't stop talking about it).

It's all rather interesting, actually. I'm intrigued to see how they roll out more Skyrim information over the next couple of months.

I'm sure Bethesda are aware what an edge moddability gives their games. This could end up being a very good thing for moddability - imagine modding gamebryo, but without the nonsensical bugs!
Indeed, the structure they use has also been *very* successful for DLC, making it very easy to mix and match any number of possible DLC packs, so the advantages of keeping the content seperate in a similar way to before far outweigh the arguments against.

Rabish12 claimed that Bethesda's handling of the GameByro engine has been the problem (rather than the engine itself).

Ok, so if that is the case - why has Obsidian encountered the same sorts of issues (popping of distance textures, rigid and rather dated character movement physics, etc) in New Vegas that you find in Fallout 3 and Oblivion? After all - it was Obsidian that developed New Vegas, not Bethesda.

Maybe there is an explanation for that?

It seems that the GameByro engine is actually capable of far more than we've seen in Oblivion and the Fallout games. If Bethesda is developing a "brand new" engine for TES V - can we actually have trust that the same issues will not recur?

I'm confused.

I really hope so. To me, that would be a big part of the experience. I am very much interested in the idea of freerunning (if only I was so athletically inclined...), and to me that would add to the realism of the experience as a whole.

Yeah - most of the code and a huge amount of the assets used for New Vegas were lifted from Fallout 3, a Bethesda game. Pretty much everything in it that was responsible for those issues was provided by Bethesda. You'll also note that New Vegas is far more broken than Fallout 3. This is because Obsidian, quite frankly, doesn't know how to code a stable or finished product. They never have and they likely never will.

I don't know. On the one hand I'm glad they're making something in-house - when a company has the resources that Bethesda does this is almost always a better solution - but given how many issues they've managed to cause from their handling of games using other engines it's got me more than a little worried. Optimization in particular is actually my biggest concern - it's not something that Bethesda is good at even in a best case scenario, so I'm not sure we'll be seeing good results with an engine they've built from the ground up.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

I heard that the dev team on TES V is twice as large as for Oblivion. So maybe they will have a more rigorous approach as well as some new faces.

Oblivion is arguably the best RPG ever developed, after Morrowind of course :)

god please make the new engine as moddable as the last one. this (and the open world approach) is what made all those gamebryo games so special despite their many shortcomings and failings.

Maybe. They've also got access to id and its employees, so if they're taking advantage of that it should help as well (I really, really hope they at least consult with Carmack - he's probably the best programmer in the industry and it'd be a shame not to use him when they have him available). I'm just going to wait until we've got some footage of the game and some details on it before I say anything solid about it.
