New Engine?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:13 am

I was hoping that this new TES would bring about a new game engine, much like TES4 brought about a new, and at the time jaw-dropping, engine.

But it seems like this is not the case, as I discovered when I was digging about the internet for information:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/16/bethesdas-new-game-is-for-current-platforms-pretty-far-along/

Additionally, he pointed out that the upcoming project will run on existing consoles and is built on the same engine that powered Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Am I the only one who is completely disillusioned by this news? My anticipation levels have officially plummeted.

EDIT: Seems like it's a brand new engine after all! (check further into the thread for more info)

Nope, it's exactly what we were expecting. Gamebryo has its limitations, but it's (one of?) the only game engines capable of running a game of TES open-world scale.

The engine will have been updated considerably, to the extent you probably won't recognise it as being the same as Oblivions. Consider the fact the Morrowind runs on the same engine as Oblivion, 5 years older than Oblivion, the same length of time between Oblivion and Skyrim, and how big the jump is between Morrowind and Oblivion in terms of graphics, collision, and so forth.

Meh. Everyone is badmouthing Gamebryo constantly but it's not that bad, and there's definitely a lot of room for improvement.

And yeah if Morrowind ran on an older version of Gamebryo and you compare the differences between Morrowind and Oblivion, or Morrowind with http://www.tesnexus.com/imageshare/images/57416-1285330927.jpg, it's not that far fetched to imagine that Skyrim will look nothing like Oblivion.

Agree 100%, and REALLY we should be giving Bethesda some credit here.... Oblivion is arguably the best RPG ever developed - I think that's worthy of some trust that they will do a good job on this. :)

People will still worry and freak out, and after the game is released they will still whine and complain, but none of it is deserved in my view.

Keep the faith!

Well, I posted this news piece so that hopefully someone would say that not everything is lost, and that's kind of what I got, so that's good. I guess I didn't do my homework properly, as I thought Oblivion had been made with a completely new engine.

Still, Fallout 3 came sometime after Oblivion, and the end result was very similar (for one, the horrible animations remained horrible). I guess my fear is that Skyrim will be more of the same.

On an unrelated note, I'm not of the opinion that Oblivion was the best RPG ever developed. For me, Morrowind was a much better game, and a much better RPG.

If an older engine means that it will run on my computer - that I won't have to upgrade yet again - if it needs maybe a bit more than Fallout3 level resources, then I'll be more than happy.

Besides, Oblivion looked quite good imo. The real key is not the technology of graphics, it's the way you design the world! Make a lame design, and it'll look awful even in crysis.

I wasn't surpised really seeing that it was gonna run on existing systems. Now if the new Xbox and Playstation were already released then i think we would be playing the game with entirely different engine.

This all reminds me of people commenting on Valve's Source Engine.

Just because the engine name does not change, does not mean that the engine does not receive substantial updates and overhauls . . . .

It's by far too early for it to happen, but I want to see the results if (when?) Bethesda starts using Id's engines.

I think you're refering to them tweaking and modifying the current engine...

gamebryo should return to the uncanny valley.
I actually didn't think it was that bad until I got New Vegas...

What about this: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/113/1136356p1.html

It claims they have developed an entirely new engine for the game.

One of the reasons why I don't like Gamebryo is because it made Fallout 3 look exactly the same like Oblivion, just with a different HUD. I honestly hope it looks very different.

Hah, once they release the first screenshots I can see EVERYONE drooling and not complaining about the engine anymore.

Depending on what version of the Gamebyro engine Bethesda decided to use when they initiated the development of TES V: Skyrim, Gamebyro Lightspeed was released in April 2009, and from version 2.6 of Gamebyro on, it has support for DirectX 10. I am not familiar with how difficult it would be to implement a PC version with, perhaps, support for DirectX 10, and a version for the consoles without, but there are plenty of games out on the market now for PC which have support for DirectX 9 - 11, allowing the player to switch between them depending on their GPU's ability.

In short: I am not overly concerned if Gamebyro is the engine that is used; and indeed, speculation as it may be, the game could be based off of the latest version.
----------------------------

But is there any conclusive evidence regarding game engines at this stage anyway? Or is this all speculation?

As long as it uses DX11 I'm happy.

Ok, calm down. There was that interview where they said they ripped nearly every module (animation and rendering are the most important for TES fans) and rewrote them, with, I suspect, code lifted from id tech 5.

Most people don't understand that if they dumped Gamebryo, we would lose out on the ability to mod the game as fully as we can now. Gamebryo allows for very open levels of modding. Games like Dragon Age which have a CS cannot be edited nearly as much (as far as I know)

It won't be id Tech 5. They already said that thousands of times.
It isn't the kind of engine that can support large open-world games like Skyrim. Also, that is just saying that if a company wants to use Id Tech 5 to power their game, Bethesda must publish it.
