I really can't describe the amount of excitement I have for this show. Its not exactly like the book, but its managed to both stay very, very similar and make its own thing. The marketing has also been nothing short of spectacular, I really wish more properties did stuff like food trucks, games, and previews, etc.

As someone who's read the books six times, I was really disappointed by some of the changes already evident in the 15-minute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQykXOukM2Q.

I can understand it being "inspired by" the books rather than being as direct a translation to screen as possible, but some of the differences seemed totally arbitrary or strange (Robb's hair colour, Arya being an expert archer?). The beginning has none of the icy dread GRRM conjures in his prologue (what did they do to the Others?), and the only member of the cast that really stood out was Sean Bean (who's reliably awesome).

Oh well... maybe I'm holding it too much to the book's (very high) standards.

You can't expect them to get every little detail right, but that being said, I do agree with you about the Others. I guess Arya's inability to use a bow was a minor plot point in the books, but for the show it served as an introduction to what kind of character she is.

Yeah, I'm mostly being unreasonable - they'll have a limited budget, and there are some things you just can't do with live-action. And in all fairness I'm probably not, as someone who'll spot all the changes and omissions, the target audience.

Will be worth a watch while I wait for A Dance with Dragons (pre-ordered years ago!).

I'm currently listening to the newest Yogscast interviewing the guy who plays Hodor, those three have been absolutely hilarious together so far.

I just recently started reading the book, so suffice to say I'm very excited for the series premiere on Sunday. From what I've seen so far, it looks very good, especially the first 15 minutes preview I saw a while ago.

Always good to hear. Don't get too attached to anyone. You don't want that.

I'm trying not to, but it's hard, all of the characters are so well written. I've heard Martin has a tendency to do things with people's favorite characters, so I'm prepared for the worst :P.

Was lucky enough to catch the 20 minute preview last night (basically the first 20 minutes of the first episode). I was impressed, this looks very promising. It's also pretty dark; I was worried they might tone some of the violence down to reach a wider audience, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Absolutely, but make sure you have an idea of what to expect. They're dark and powerfully-written, with content that's not for everyone.

I can't imagine who would dislike this series.

They are such well crafted page turners with fascinating characters, start the first book and you will likely find you can't put it down.

Ah, you're one of those.

TV and books are totally different media. They didn't have a whole chapter of internal monologue to tell the viewer that Arya is a tomboy, they chose to do it by showing her doing something boyish - archery. Likewise, a lot of the 'icy dread' was based on the language GRRM used, while the TV series had to rely on visuals (I thought they did quite well, I think). So far, its been ridiculously faithful compared to other adaptations (including Lord of the Rings, which is pretty much held as a standard), but if you want exactly what is in the book you better read the books again :P Really though, does changing Robb's hair color somehow diminish the standards of the show or change the plot/characters/setting in any way?

I picked up Game of Thrones and found it somewhat boring until near the end, but without this boring part, you can't have the epics of Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords. Really well laid out story.

I am really excited about this series, can't wait to see the first episode  Re-reading the books right now (I am currently on the first half of the first volume) to prepare for A Dance with Dragons...

Btw, talking about noticing details, the first comment I made when I saw Daenerys on screen was "Hey, why aren't her eyes purple?" Yup :P

The hair colour doesn't matter, but it's an example of what seems a completely unnecessary change. It's like the Targaryens' eye colour (as urrinor mentioned); sure, they don't have to be purple, it doesn't change much. But why aren't they?

But I'm not one of those to the extent that I'll watch it and complain bitterly about it; if the deviations from the book bother me enough, I'll just switch off and wait for Dance to finally be published. I think it's being aimed as much at those who haven't read the books as those who have; so if others enjoy it (and perhaps discover the books as a result), then that's great.

Exactly what Fearless Hero said above... those kinds of aesthetic changes don't bother me at all, but I do wonder why they do exist after all.

It's not like they would lose audience if they DIDN'T change the hair colours, as well as they wouldn't lose audienceif they DID change (ok, to some extent... I don't want to see any Stark rocking a pink mohawk), but unless the change makes the actor/ress very uncomfortable, I don't see why they should change anything in those small small details.

That is probably what happened though. Maybe the actress playing Daenerys wasn't ok with "whatever-they-do-to-change-eye-colour". Not really a trouble though, it was a matter of lore IIRC (Valyrian features).

Now somewhat changing the subject, is anyone else also freaked about Jon Snow's actor? I never, but never pictured Jon with curly hair and a confused look on his apparently round face

:o
I was thinking Jon's actor was Robb, for some reason... that's really not how I pictured Jon either.

As long as you've got that. Its mostly people who complain about every minor detail at every minor opportunity and insist that its the worst thing since AIDS because Robb doesn't have auburn hair that piss me off.

According to the interviews, they tried the purple Targ eyes with contacts and it just looked weird. I'm guessing the hair was a similar issue, with it looking strange on the actors or something  Like I said, it doesn't bother me personally as long as the important features (Lannister gold, Baratheon black, Targ silver) are present.

I would love to see that, but then it has to be consistent with John Snow and Arya Stark with pink perhaps other punk styles too. He used an rpg name Ice. Bastardisation of the original title but consistent with its text.
