As someone who's read the books six times, I was really disappointed by some of the changes already evident in the 15-minute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQykXOukM2Q.
I can understand it being "inspired by" the books rather than being as direct a translation to screen as possible, but some of the differences seemed totally arbitrary or strange (Robb's hair colour, Arya being an expert archer?). The beginning has none of the icy dread GRRM conjures in his prologue (what did they do to the Others?), and the only member of the cast that really stood out was Sean Bean (who's reliably awesome).
Oh well... maybe I'm holding it too much to the book's (very high) standards.
Ah, you're one of
those.
TV and books are totally different media. They didn't have a whole chapter of internal monologue to tell the viewer that Arya is a tomboy, they chose to do it by showing her doing something boyish - archery. Likewise, a lot of the 'icy dread' was based on the language GRRM used, while the TV series had to rely on visuals (I thought they did quite well, I think). So far, its been ridiculously faithful compared to other adaptations (including Lord of the Rings, which is pretty much held as a standard), but if you want exactly what is in the book you better read the books again
Really though, does changing Robb's hair color somehow diminish the standards of the show or change the plot/characters/setting in any way?
