[BETARESOURCE] New Fire and Frost Explosions.

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 7:32 pm

Greetings, forumites. I was wandering by the forums today and thought that I could release this little mod, as it has been sitting on my HD for a while now, and I don't think I will work on it further, at least not in the foreseeable future. This is a pluginless replacer for Fire- and Frost-type Area-o-effect spells: essentially, it replaces the explosions effect with something that I think looks a little better. It is worth noting that the Fire effect is also used by a plethora of other Destruction spells, so those explosions will be replaced too. Originally these were going to be part of a full magic effect replacer, but a couple of months ago I stopped working on it - I've made the switch to Linux and here I have some problems running Morrowind (not the mention that I am not in the least bit familiar with GIMP). As I said, it is a pluginless replacer, so you just have to unzip the content of the archive into your Data Files directory to start using the mod. To my knowledge, there are no other mods thar replace the Fire and Frost explosions, so it should be compatible with everything. Let me know if you like it :).

Yay. ^^ Thanks for the new affects. :D

I think John.Moonsugar runs Morrowind on Linux. Perhaps if you two are using the same version (or even if not?) he could help you get it to run. :) No one should be denied the pleasures of Morrowind.

I'm glad that you like them. At the moment I don't plan to work on any mod, but if I change my mind I'll let you know.

It was indeed due to John.Moonsugar's posts that I discovered that it was possible to run Morrowind on Linux. Ironically, I seem to be affected by a nasty flickering bug that he has too, and I actually stumbled on his posts detailing the problem on several other message boards :D.

A bump of sorts because someone steered me to this thread. These look really nice- did you ever fix your problem, and if so will we see any more of these?

Well, a couple months ago the driver problem that plagued my card was solved by NVIDIA and now I am able to play Morrowind on Ubuntu in a glorious 1680*1050. This has understandably caused my Vvardenfell passion to grow back, and as a result I think I will continue developing this project. I intend to release it a pluginless magic effect replacer. Currently I am extremely busy with university exams and my free time is limited, but... let's just say I'll keep this thread as a reminder.

I didn't know Mediafire was having trouble with servers, but I just checked and you are right. As I have switched to Dropbox for my file sharing needs, you can now find the replacer http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1732128/Knef%27s%20Explosions.zip, at least for the time being. I will remove this file when I release a complete version of this mod.

Man, I hope so. You've got real skill, and I'd say an revamp of magic effects is needed as badly as an animation overhall. You make being attacked by atronachs feel dangerous, and gorgeous at the same time. So please, keep at it!

Hey, good news :) ! Of course, for whatever reason my NVIDIA support in Ubuntu is not so glorious these days... but I mainly play under 7 anyway  .

I've been using these for some months now, and I must say, they are so much more vibrant and dangerous looking than the stock effects. Fantastic work! I'll be keeping an eye out for anything else you might do, for sure.

I love the illusion's effect !!
I love the frost's effect too  , however is the round edge a little too visible?

The mysticism's effect is too “modern”, too 'rigid'.

Thanks everybody for your support. It's nice to see that custom GIMP brushes and a little NifSkopin' go a long way :D I am also eager to hear your feedback about the explosions, but first I'd like to tell you more about this project.

As I said, I plan this to be a full, pluginless magic effect replacer. I have chosen to make it pluginless in order to spare users the hassle of merging objects and to avoid conficts with other mods; this, however, may limit my tweaking possibilities and lead to some apparent inconsistencies. For example, by default the Light effect shares some graphics with the Fire Damage effect, while Disintegration spells have the same Bolt effect as Shock Damage. This inconsistencies are present in vanilla Morrowind, but of course my tweaking will make them more evident. In order to remove these inconsistencies one could create a replacer with a proper plugin (an ESP file, that is), so to assign every spell effect custom graphics. This would, however, lead into a conflict with every mod which changes spell effect prices, icons or descriptions, and would force to user to use a merging object tool in order to solve the conflict. At the present I am not willing to do that, and this is the reason why this replacer will be pluginless - but who knows what the future may hold.

Yes, the nova edge is definitely too visible, I'm trying to work that out with a better texture. The Mysticism effect is a work in progress - I wanted to make it less pink but now I feel that its color scheme overlaps with the Shock one. The ring animation is currently the same as vanilla - it is one of my favourite vanilla explosions - and maybe it looks rigid in a still frame because in-game that mutating geometry is only seen for a split second. As always, any constructive feedback is precious.

Before I go, I'll post http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm228/dopoknef/Dardi.jpg.

It's an unfortunate flaw in the way magic effects are set up in the CS. One solution would be to maintain an optional ESP to correct the issue, but I can understand why you would like to avoid that. To be honest, the inconsistencies you speak of already stick out noticeably in the base game (especially if you're working with spell effects a lot); at least they'll look more awesome with your new work.

Love the new bolts, by the way. That fire bolt looks dangerous!
