I just got Fallout 3 GOTY edition, and I am relatively new to computer gaming besides some seriously old games . My computer managed to install Fallout fine, but when I try to start a new game via New>Yes then the loading screen crashes with the message: Fallout3 has stopped working, with Windows attempted to find a solution. If you have XP available try it...XP cured all my problems. If that is a laptop you are using, it may not meet minimum requirements for the video...

This is not strong enough to play the game. And since its a laptop you are unable to upgrade. The only way that you are going to get the game to play is to get a new PC, preferring to buy or build a desktop.

Really theres no other way to play the game. I have to get a new PC. T_T

There is a modified .dll file that you can try that may get the game running. Its floating around here somewhere, but most dont recommend it since it can cause instability with the Operating System or overheating of that video chipset. The GPU is just too weak to play the game by itself.

Now, some with Intel Graphic chipsets have taken the risk of replacing a .dll file to make the game work. I will make mention of it here if you're really that desperate, but I take no responsibility should something go wrong with your system later on. Replacing .dll files can be harmful to your operating system and puts the chipset under stress that it's not intended for, so better backup whatever is important:

That may be true for some, but it was horrible and un-playable for me. A simple OS change allowed me to play the game finally without the need to "tweak" any files or settings which has never been necessary for any other game in my memory. You don't find it odd that 95% of the complaints here are from people using Win7?

I've been here long enough to know that there are MANY people playing the game with Win 7.

That was simple - nearly every post here with people reporting freezes were using Win7. I am not saying there are not people using Win7, simply stating that it would not run the game for me and my alternative. When one is advised to begin deleting files and other tweaks of this sort that tells me there is a conflict between this OS and the game. XP required no such tweaks....just loaded and began trouble free playing.

Weird, I run win7 and I had to do more tweaks when I ran on XP....

yeah well i have the brand new asus g57 eax HD 4.0 radeon mobility 5870 1gb GDDR5 and 12gb ddr3 ram and a core i7 and it does the same thing.

Did you make sure to uninstall GamerOSD and smartdoctor. Those have been known to cause the game to crash.

There is an explanation, though no one seems to understand it, save for the more computer savvy people who have been around here for a while, and a few people who aren't computer savvy but still accepting.

The main reason is, PCs can literally be built millions of different ways. Billions maybe. Because of this diversity in hardware and software combinations, it is very likely that the mass majority of peoples problems are from their configuration. It goes beyond meeting the system requirements, because the only reason a program can crash is because it is not getting something it needs. IE: in the case of the OP with an Intel chip, the game crashes because it is not getting the hardware power it requires.

Furthermore, it is not limited to this game. You only think that because you have not spent much time on other game forums. And the reason you only see people posting problems is because this is a tech support forum, so people are't going to be posting about how well their game works.
