New gameplay video shares details on Abilities

Honestly, CoD Graphics weren't all that great. Brink looks really nice imho, especially the outfits and character features. You can also tell from the video when the graphics had been decreased, or it was older footage.

Did you notice, when the medic brings himself up, the pistol shooting animation? Wth is that, it looks like a fail to me :(

Except for that he's holding the pistol with only one hand, I don't see anything wrong in it.

on a side note, alot of people commenting on the video on youtube/joystiq/gameinformer seem to think the game is multiplayer only and thus are not interested. where has the assumption come from? people need to do research or im worried not enough people will experience the magical nature of brink!

It still is essentially a multiplayer game. I mean the single player game is the same as the muiltiplayer with bots. If people do not like the multiplayer style of play, I doubt they will like this game.

CapnHowdy21 is spot on. BRINK has singleplayer, but it's nothing different from multiplayer. And BRINK isn't advertised as a great singleplayer-experience either.

The big question mark floating above the deal, however, is: Does this mean the mutliplayer will be a better experience than in other games OR does this mean the singleplayer will be a worse experience than in other games.

I don't see what all the hubbub is about with the rim lighting. I barely noticed it at all. I've watched the video at least 2 dozen times now and I still have to actually "look" for it.

I watched it 3 times (once in general, once for taking screenshots, once because someone commented about "seeing body and feet" to make sure they are still not in *sadface*) and the rim-lighting sprung into my eye every single time.

Honestly, CoD Graphics weren't all that great.

Especially when talking about jerky animations. 3rd-Person Team Tactical proofs that.

IMHO, the reson the animations look jerky is because of the exaggerated proportions... you notice EVERYTHING more lol (not to bash, i like it that way)

The comment about jerky animations was spawned from the medic handgun Aim-down-sights part of the video where the pistol doesn't seem to move and let me comment and the fact that the EXACT same thing happens in black opps so whats the big deal?

on a different note, any update on the music?

This whole "jerky animations and bad graphics" debate is giving me mad deja vu. Hmmm...where have I heard these arguments before...

Oh yea. It was actually twice. Team Fortress 2 and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. People weren't happy with the cartoony cel shaded graphics, and griped and complained and said the developers were lazy. They thought the games would be crap since the makers couldn't even have semi-realistic graphics.

And look where those games are. Wind Waker was critically acclaimed, gaining about 95% scores from all major game reviewers, and Team Fortress is still one of the most widely played PC games, even after 4 years.

tl;dr

Other games had different artstyles and were called crappy, and they turned out to be amazing.

Surprised no one has seen this yet.

If you read the description for the general engineer and medic kit, it says they cannot buff themselves with the upgrades i.e. engineers cannot buff their own weapons with a level 2 buff and medics cannot buff their health with a level 2 buff. Just food for thought.

Edit: I apologize for the double post.

And its seen about 42 seconds in under description for "improved gun buff." Description: You cannot administer this buff to yourself.

And I am pleased about shotguns not getting shafted, attachment-wise, like they do in so many other games.

It's still fairly noticable to me, but far better than it was in earlier builds/videos. I think it's "off" in several parts of the vid as well. It helps it that the majority of the background throughout the video was orange shipping container though.

And yes. While I only use shotguns for certain builds it is always disappointing when I can't do anything with the damn things as far as "tricking them out".

I'm really, really confused about the rim lighting. Are they on all of the time or not, lol?!

Maybe it's a combination of old footage and new stuff?

I can see how it can be annoying to some people and not a problem for others. Personally, I'm already thinking this game, with all of its different abilities, the SMART stuff, and different
types of grenades, is going to be so fast and chaotic, we may end up not noticing in the end, lol! :D

Just came home, and number 2 of my three wishes (1. Brink release; 2. Ability Showcase video; 3. Character Customization Showcase video) was granted. I'm so happy. I'm disappointed that I can't weapon-buff myself, but that does make sense in terms of balancing, forcing players to rely on each other for the buffs, so I can't say I outright object to the idea. Still... would have been nice...

On the recent conversations of rim-lighting:

I don't see what all the hubbub is about with the rim lighting. I barely noticed it at all. I've watched the video at least 2 dozen times now and I still have to actually "look" for it.

Personally, I never even saw it and I was looking for it after reading these comments. Perhaps I'm blind. But I found it interesting that these gameplay videos SD release never have the HUD on. It would make sense to me that rim-light/radioactive goo is linked to the HUD. And if the HUD isn't shown, neither should the rim-lighting, if that is the case.

Anyways, I'm hoping rim-lighting is actually the Operative's Comm Hack ability at work, not the default gameplay setting. But I think there is too much hype about it given there has been no official information shed on the subject.

Have no clue, but heard that it might be something that can be turned off. In the video it's definitely off during the parts being shown from a nonplayer perspective, doesn't appear to be on in some player perspective moments, but is on at various other points from the player perspective.

It's levels aren't horrid though so it's a little less of a concern now when compared to the footage we had before, but again may have something to do with the backgrounds.
My biggest concern is still that it's enough to catch the eye of a player who might otherwise not be paying close enough attention.

I was surprised that
1. Flashbangs will blind teammates with FF on
2. There are "levels" of turret abilities
3. When you have an enhanced buff ability when you buff yourself you get the effects of the regular buff

I fear 1. I hate flashbangs and have so since the first time one went off on my screen in CS. They give me a horrendous headache and can't be safe for players and their eyes.

So is a strobe light, but they can do plenty of damage to the eye, cause seizures, etc.

I just find that having the screen suddenly go white when you're staring intently at a particular collection of pixels to be a really bad idea. Couple it with the fact that the first time it happened to me I was in a dark room both in game and life, and the sounds that often accompany them, and it's just a sensory attack.

Sure that's what they are in real life, but look at what they're used for in real life. :D

Well, if you want to get technical, it's horrendous amounts of radiation and energy blasting at your eyes, temporarily overloading each and every one of the light receptors in your eyes.

OMG, I hate flashbangs, too.

I see them all of the time in Modern Warefare....
....
...
.....usually because I accidentally always throw it right in front of me all of the time or it hits the wall or the doorway in front and bounces back at me (and I usually forgot to get away/look away fast enough). :stare:
And that is why I decided to never trust myself with flashbangs (or even some grenades) unless in extreme emergencies, lol.

Don't trust me with your flashbangs, Brink teammates, ever, lol!

I like flashbangs. I can imagine the maneuvers I can pull with those. *Throws flashbang and slides all matrix likes past, gunning opponents down* or something like that.

Well, it's been hard to gauge how much you will slide depending on certain factors (momentum for example), but it appeared as though the guy being chased (right after the medic section) slid under a 6' ledge, stood and then almost immediately managed another slide of roughly the same length.

It was quite a quick double up with a major stop to momentum so I'm wondering how easy it might be to maintain an almost continuous slide.

Sliding won't be as fast as sprinting, also slight length is determined at least in part my body type.

Hopefully I can make a character looks like Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men.

I was waiting for someone to make that reference.

Saw this video on the brink website in media 20 minutes ago, and was like "HOW long has this been here!". I guess not long haha.

Longer than you would think.

Yup its a nice touch for teamwork.

So I guess your the throw-stick-jump-off-a-building type of guy?

I wonder if it will be homing. Or aimed in a sense by your character so it is likely to hit.

Or sneak around behind you stick kind of guy. Either way free comms hack and disguise. I wonder if you can do both to a downed player?

If it helps, I've heard that the blinding effect of the flashbangs doesn't last nearly as long as it does in CoD, for example. And the description of them sounds pretty neat too. If you see it explode you get blinded. Which hopefully means that if you look away quickly enough you won't be affected by it.
