New PC gamer please help me out...

Post » Tue Jan 14, 2014 10:26 am

Hello I have been gaming for years. I have however never gamed on a PC until about 4 months ago. I use to have skyrim until I got my Xbox one and sold my old 360 and all games. I miss having skyrim so I have been thinking of buying it for my pc. My PC specs are as follows...

Hp Envy 15 Brand new. Ordered it 3 weeks ago and just got it. BTW I know NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS.

1tb hd, 8gb ram and the graphics card is a gt740m with 2gb dedicated to graphics

Will my computer be able to play skyrim on the highest settings? I originally bought the computer for Farming Simulator and Euro truck simulator and having so much fun on it and with the mods I thought skyrim would be amazing!

My concerns are using a keyboard and mouse for a rpg game. I went out last night and bought a mouse its the Razer Naga which works great with my other 2 games. In Skyrim can you walk and aim with the mouse or must you use the keyboard? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Not sure about your specs, but you can hook up a 360 controller if you're not used to KB&M.

Use that to test your computer^

And like shadow said, you can use a Xbox 360 controller for the PC.

I would prefer to use the mouse to be honest.

I have the older version of the envy 15 from a few years back. The configuration for Skyrim that has been most convenient for me is using a trackball mouse on the right side with Razer Nostromo keypad for left hand instead of the laptop keyboard, with WASD movement, shouts mapped to the trigger button and sprint, jump, crouch mapped to the directional pad section.

I envy you sir. I dream of the day I can upgrade to PC gaming, and Skyrim will be my first buy no doubt. Hope you get things figured out!

The mouse in Skyrim is used to aim and to look around - actual movement is done with the keyboard (WASD keys for the default controls). The mouse buttons are used to attack with the right hand, attack or block with the left hand, and to change from first to third person view. All controls can be completely remapped to fit your personal tastes, though.

It takes a bit of getting used to if you're only used to a controller, but you should get the hang of it quickly, and once you do, you'll probably never want to go back. If you do prefer the controller though, you can always connect one to your computer.

One thing to be aware of is that most laptops with dedicated graphics cards, such as yours, actually have two graphics cards; the dedicated card (in your case the GT740M) for games and other graphics intensive operations, and an integrated Intel graphics chipset which is intended for more mundane tasks and allows the machine to conserve power for extended battery life. Sometimes the drivers for these don't properly switch over to the gaming graphics when they're supposed to, and they'll attempt to run the games on the Intel chipset, which isn't up to the task. If this happens to you you'll have to fiddle around with the graphics settings to get it to work properly. But we can help you out with that if need be.

Except for those that can't. Which is like half of them, not to mention all actions permanently bound to the ready/sheathe key.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-740M.89900.0.html You should be able to play comfortably with medium graphics settings.

I'm not sure how 740M works with 1080p, but on lower resolutions it definitely runs Skyrim with better settings than medium. I ran med-high with 540M two years ago.
