New hands-on preview indicates pop-up issues..

Post » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:44 am

Just been reading a hands-on preview by bit-tech.net which indicates pop-up issues on the XBOX 360 version.

"The view was expansive, but not exactly impressive and as we moved through the landscape, grass, rocks and shrubs were popping in to view, breaking some of the immersion. This was on the Xbox 360 version, so we’re hoping that the PC version won’t suffer such LODing issues."

^Immersion^

It's been known for a while now that the consoles will have problems. It's to be expected when the game is forced to run on obsolete hardware.

The world is now officially coming to an end... :brokencomputer:

Anyhow... people could've seen this coming... the hardware is a couple of years old now and we're paying a price for it. I'd rather have tons of unique towns, dungeons and an inspiring questline than all effort being put in creating a game without pop up. Also, most open world games have pop up issues because it's pretty hard to do this right ... Skyrim will be epic.

Can't stress the "separate alpha demo build" enough. We haven't seen the game yet.

Yeah, I'm certainly worried about this, but they did state repeatedly that they do their graphical optimizations last. This should hopefully be resolved.

Alpha doesn't really concern this part guys. They're not going to expand the LOD just because it's a beta. The 360 is dated hardware, and that's why there's popup. Mystery solved.

We've been told (and if Oblivion is any indication) that we can expand on these sorts of things for the PC. It depends on how hard it'll hit the hardware.

This announcement comes with mixed results
-there have been ppl who have played the latest build but never made mention of pop in
-yes it is an alpha build
- yes 360 and ps3 is old hardware
-but they have had much more experience with the system
They know it inside and out
- we wont know til we see the final build ourselves

And only to defend pop in on cOnsoles
I have been playing oblivion on ps3 lately and i dont mind the pop in too much
If it is in skyrim then i still wont mind.
Besides 90% of ppl on this forum are PC players so they have nothing to worry about
The 15% of PC elitist in this forum however
Usually chime in to bash the consoles and bethesda's "dumb" idea to develop for them

Not worried at all. The only time I'll worry is when I have a finished product in my house and there are still the suggested problems.

Alpha
The new "in" word for worried folk or those who don't think Bethesda can screw up, there is gonna be hell to pay if the release is not much better than the alpha, fortunately some of us are aware of the limitations involved, we will be able to accept what we get.

Do you imply the game graphics will be cut further to improve draw distance for the final release or the Xbox hardware will suddenly upgrade itself?

I'd rather be skeptical that wait for a miracle if I were you.

Not true, Todd said in one of the very first interviews that graphical optimization is the last thing they do before bug testing.

Well, if it's as good as it looks in the high res versions of the 3 part demos on the xbox, i'm more than happy.

Most developers for the last, I don't know... 20+ years, have probably optomized code on the FINAL product to run the most efficient on whatever platform the software is intended for.

Some people just don't want to listen/except that for some reason. Let then worry themselves lol.

Graphical optimization = reducing poly count, reducing texture quality, reducing the number of drawn objects in the scene, it always has been and always will be a compromise to allow for limited hardware, I'm not just speaking of consoles either, low end pc's also require this compromise, in business you are after the largest customer base possible, so you make compromises for low end hardware.

Alpha Build, not a big deal. When the game goes gold and then we have issues, that's when it becomes a problem. Other then that decent article, I'm pretty much at the point that the articles themselves don't matter unless they shed new info.
