They both kind of work in unison I believe, although your motives for picking one or the other would be different. I suggest going with both however. Pick a Khajit, Wood Elf, or Argonian. Argonian would be cool as a thief because of their waterbreathing ability. If you want to go full assassin might want to go with the Khajit.

Do both. Khajiit is a strong choice. Go towards sneak and pickpocket, both of which level up quickly if you focus on them. I am playing a similar character and have hit level 26 with just 15 hours of play. That's extremely fast, from my experience. For combat, bows and daggers are good. Specifically, a sneak perk will net you 15x damage on dagger backstabs. Bows are great for chipping away at a strong enemy from afar, or for long-distance assassinations.

Make sure you find the guardian stones at the start and choose Thief for the 20% bonus on level stealth skills.

Yea I have a Khajit thats level 38 right now focused on sneak lockpicking and archery so you can succeed with a thief type of character. Done a lot of work with the Thieves Guild, planning on joining the Dark Brotherhood once I hit level 40.

I play both separately, I used to merge em though. But I can't seem to get inside the head of an assassin anymore and roleplay them properly, being a murderer isn't something I feel is cool anymore, I guess I'm guessing old.

Make sure you put enough points into dexterity and speed, you won't need that much intelligence or wisdom, but some strength and constitution wouldn't hurt either.

I'm currently using a a Khajiit thief/assassin set-up and I'm at level 45. I really like the set up and it works well (and its fun). "Training" with the thieves guild helps prepare you for the DB.
