Yay! :celebration:

Time to dissect that teaser. We got a date from that barcode they showed at 0:25 (courtesy of a comment) but. . . wait a second. . . Square Enix? Sqeenix working on a Hitman game? What is Agent 47 gonna do this time, assassinate Sephiroth using the Buster Sword?

Square-Enix owns Eidos, whom in the past were the ones who published the Hitman games, as well as IO Interactive, the devs of the series.

Really?

This I did not know. Guess I never noticed their logo on the box before.

I think it only happened last year or so, well after the last Hitman game came out, so unless you've been following Deus Ex or the Tomb Raider series, it's not really surprising you didn't notice. Unless you're referring to Eidos, that is.

Anyway, I'm quite happy about this, big fan of the other games, particularly Jesper Kyd's soundtrack work. I just hope the recent slump IO's been in only applies to their non-Hitman games...

Square-Enix continued to publish games under the Eidos logo for a while. I don't believe they do anymore, though.

I must be in the minority, 'cause I think the Hitman series has a great concept going for it, but the execution in every single game isn't quite right. The factors that determine whether or not you're detected seem broken or completely random, taking a stealthy approach via physically hiding yourself never seems to work at all, the performance is extremely questionable even on systems well over recommended specs with the framerate having no idea what to do with itself, the plots are okay at best (In the couple entries that even have one), and I absolutely despise those [censored] timed missions.

However, I'm open to the possibility that it will be done very well eventually, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this new one will accomplish.

Even Blood Money? Because I feel the same about the first two (or three, if you count the rehash that was Contracts) but with Blood Money I think they really nailed it. Also, I don't think BM had any timed missions, thankfully. :P

Funny enough, Blood Money was the one feature-wise I was most impressed with. However, it was also the one I struggled the hardest with on a technical level. Wonky framerates, atrocious mouse lag, extremely weird moments where the AI just blissfully forgot I existed, and the clunkiest controls in the series. All my personal experience, of course. I'd have to say, out of all the Hitman games, I liked 2 the most, but that's still being overly kind to it; that game drove me absolutely insane with the flaws I mentioned in my previous post (One I forgot to mention being frequent crashing to desktop, something 2 was especially keen on doing). It did, however, impress me with the sheer size and ambition of its level design.

Yeah, I can see that, although I've been fortunate not to have any technical problems myself, even on my older rigs (could be that I happened to be using their recommended hardware.) I do like the direction they went with Blood Money: leaving entry points open to be exploited without making them too obvious - took a lot of the frustration out of trying to infiltrate undetected. Also the addition of body stashes was a great idea: a little gamey, but better than having your cover blown in the first few minutes. Little changes like that really made the difference for me.

I should replay Hitman 2 again sometime, but I remember it being obscenely difficult on some levels, where it would almost degenerate into a run-and-gun escape most of the time...

Anyway, hope this new Hitman continues their trend from Blood Money. :D

Edit: Just fired up Hitman 2 for a bit, and wow I'd forgotten just how unforgiving that game is. That first level alone, sneaking into a mafia stronghold... Yeah, I think I'll go back to Blood Money. :P

I forgot how gorgeous that engine was, though - but I still prefer Blood Money. Those old ragdolls are pretty hilarious now.

You posted too quickly. That was addressed to sub tonic. Hitman can not warrant any criticism, AT ALL.

The series has some flaws, certainly, and each of the games tends to make some significant changes, so it clearly hasn't "settled" yet. Games with unique concepts tend to attract a devoted fanbase regardless of flaws, though, because where else are fans of that gameplay going to go for it? Even if it wasn't the greatest game ever, I'd certainly be glad for a company announcing a new RPG if they were the only ones who made RPG's. I'd say Hitman hits its concept more than misses, though; I see them as flawed gems, instead of sugar-coated garbage. Seems to be almost the only two types of unique-concept game.

I'll agree that they're definitely flawed gems. In no way did I mean to imply that I thought they were bad games, just that I've had bad experiences with them and think that the idea still needs a lot of work before I can truly see it as greatness. The potential for it is there, though, no doubt about that. Like you said, it's one of a kind.

Maybe I'll give Blood Money another shot - on a console. Every time I've tried to play the PC version, it just absolutely refused to work properly. Maybe I'll be able to appreciate the improvements to gameplay more with a more stable version.

Nah, LBP is fairly unique, and it's a work of frigging art.

It's certainly worth it, but you're quite right that mileage will vary. Blood Money just happens to be one of the few games I feel an itch to play anytime they get mentioned - even now I'm resisting the temptation to start another run through, even though the missions hold no more secrets... This new Hitman cannot come soon enough! :P

I think it was the sadistic voyiurism of the games that made me keep replaying them. In the hotel levels, you could mess around with jumping over balconies, breaking into other rooms, leaving corpses in random locations, setting of fire alarms and generally causing mayhem, while nobody suspected you.

In Hitman 2, it had these hilarious cheats that were almost as much fun to play with as the ordinary game. One of them gave you every single collectable item in the game in your inventory, which was hilarious when you have to go through an airport scanner, and you just start dropping all this crap, knives, bottles, golf clubs, suitcases, shotguns, M60s, explosives, out of your tiny pockets like you're Doctor Who.

One of my favourites was that Indonesian building with the scanners. I broke into a locker room that was full of firemen in masks and suits, I murdered one with an axe, causing the others to flee. But because I stole his uniform and ran out to the lobby, nobody knew who I was. One of the firemen ran to a security guard and started pointing at me, but he wouldn't believe him. All the firemen started going back to their room, and the one who tried to grass on me looked so agitated, because he alone knew who was, and he knew he was going to die for trying to get me killed.

Little stuff like that, it's just so much fun how the games will react to your weird ass tangents.

Indeed. I like the opera house level the most, I think - I just played a scenario where I took the place of one of the actors on stage, shot my target when the cue arrived, and ran off stage before anyone could react!

Yeah, I remember some of the levels being amazing, even the ones that were bastard hard. :P

I really liked the Moscow mission where you have to find your mark among a room of possible targets, but you only had sketchy details on him - that he was left/right-handed, smoked cigars or a pipe, wore glasses or not, etc. But as good as the hits themselves were, I could rarely get away clean afterward - the guards seemed inhumanly good at seeing through my disguises, especially when the alarm went out.
