New hub update - The Sounds of Skyrim

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 11:45 pm

I thought dwemer were extinct? Is this the theme we will here while traversing skyrim? The overworld theme?

No idea what you mean by "overworld," but I believe this is the theme that will play at the main menu/startup screen of Skyrim. I think MW's theme appeared in the game as well, so this one might too.

And yes, the Dwemer are gone. Their machines remain, though.

[edit] waaaay slow

Now it's officially said that Morrowind's theme is the Elder Scrolls theme.

Yeah. When I first heard the trailer, I thought Skyrim theme would be a mere cousin to this of Morrowind, the way Oblivion's was : different, while you could pick up the parentage easily.

But this is way more direct inspiration after all. Drums intro kinda told us that then.

No one said that the Dwemer were extinct. The Dwemer just vanished. Besides, in Morrowind and Oblivion there was still a Dwemer alive. He is most likely dead after 200 years now but yeah, they aren't really "extinct" just misplaced for centuries hehe.

The Dwemer's golden souls were used to make the skin of Numidium. If they're not dead, they're certainly not alive, and certainly well beyond reach, what with Numidium going kaboom at the end of Daggerfall.

I wouldn't be so sure thats a screen.

Yes, but remember that we assumed those mountains at the top of GI pg.48 were CG or concept art, and about some dev or another was twittering about how fantastic the volumetric clouds/ fog looked in game.
It wouldn't surprise me too much if that was a sneaky, unrevealing game screen, considering we also got the first look at anything from the game in action from this update.

Maybe not, First of all, he was a mer, so that adds a bit of an extended life right there. Second, he was being looked after by a very, very powerful Dunmer Wizard who has been alive for about 4,000 years.

It's pretty much a Nord-ized remake, and I love it.

Then again, we could've guessed Morrowind's theme represented the entire series back when http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPEEp5R_pOo was Oblivion's original main theme...

Third, he had Corprus, which renders you immune to aging. Evidence: Nerevarine.

That said, unless he was able to get out of Morrowind before Red Mountain's most recent eruption, he is most certainly dead.

As well as infected with a horrible degenerative disease and located right in the middle of a volcanic explosion.

Im glad the theme still has parts reminiscent to the original Morrowind theme. At 1st I was nervous that the drums were the only part I could recognize from the last two games

I'm sure Divayth could have teleported Yagrum, along with all of the rest of House Telvanni out of Vardenfell before the eruption.

Update. And not with the latter more epic half of it completely missing like in Oblivion.

See my above post, good Lady.

That said, as a student of band for 4 years, listenting to the theme, they afterwards go into the "Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin" bit, but it doesn't seem like the trailer music would mesh that well to my ears. So I have to believe it's something more after that.

It's funny how Lampert said that no matter how many times you hear the main theme you still get goosebumps, I can't deny I most certainly did. This new rendition sounds amazing and I can only hear so little, what a tease!
Judging by how Todd Howard mentioned Dwemer ruins in mountain cliffs and now the look at a Dwemer centurion sphere it looks like the Dwemer will perhaps have some kind of role in the game, which is great as I loved how they were in Morrowind.
Finally, Jeremy Soule has been confirmed as the composer!

When he said that I was like "OK, sure we'll see." then two seconds later I was sitting with goosebumps. It sounds great and I'm dying to get my hands on that score.

This new theme is beautiful. Already, it feels even more definitive to the series than I think the tracks from Morrowind and Oblivion ever were.

Morrowind's theme, while very melodious and "fantastical" sounding to me, kind of loses itself halfway through as the brass becomes simply overbearing. There's the distinct opening minute and the ending, but inbetween you just kind of lose yourself in it. By contrast, Oblivion's theme had a very nice and distinctive opening but the rest was all very weak and you felt less of a progression than its predecessor had. This combines the best of both worlds, exhilarating like Oblivion's but with the playful notes and instrumental flourishes of Morrowind's.

I love light, dancing harpsichord and string sounds that chime in before the second stanza. They make the song and the world itself feel very "airy" and adventurous, kind of like in Celtic music. Then we end with the Dragonish choir, which only adds a further degree of weight and awesomeness to it all.

Seriously psyched - I just hope Jeremy Soule can deliver equally well with the rest of the game's tracks. :)
