New hub update - The Sounds of Skyrim #2

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:25 pm

It's kind of funny, but the sound design clips told me more about what I want to know about the quality of Skryim than anything in the initial combat-laden Game Informer article. Seeing the look of the dwemer construct, hearing the main theme, hearing the quality of the voice acting and the quality of the dialogue (just compare what Esbern says in those few short clips to...well...anything that anyone says in Oblivion at any point).

They never said they were releasing it, but they mentioned it, and I doubt they would make one and not release it especially after what a huge success the modding community has been.

Oh.

The CS is what they use to make the game. Without it, there would be no game in the first place.

The videos were awesome, don't get my wrong, but the fact they have a picture of Mads Mikkelsen from Vahalla Rising had cheering at my computer! If Skyrim has the faintest inspiration from that I will be thrilled. It's such a different movie then what you would expect and I highly recommend checking it out if you get a chance, it's on Watch It Now on Netflix:

Mark Lampert, if you're reading this, Bravo! Everything sounds fantastic. The game is going to be wonderful, and the music gives me chills every time I replay the video.

If Techno Viking will be in the game in some fashion I will lol. I like the new sounds. The new quest update sound is cool. KSHINK!

The theme having chanting is a nice addition too. I wonder how long it's going to take for the uber-fans to learn the lyrics...

I enjoyed watching Mark's body language when he plays the main theme, at around 2:40 in the fourth video... especially when he purses his lips - it seemed like he wanted to bust out a huge grin :D I get the impression he, and the rest of the team, are really proud of this.

i'm hoping he is. i've always like his performances.
he was the only part i enjoyed in King Arther

Hell yeah! That shot of him is from Valhalla Rising, in which he plays a norse warrior named One Eye. However, I really hope he gets a role.

"I saw a mudcrab the other day. Terrible creatures. I hope to never see another."
I don't know; Oblivion's hard to beat.

I reckon the BTS one was much more informative. I meant there was all that concept art, the reveal of a construction kit, the current loading screen and you never got anything THIS http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx316/randomguyface/5thmap.png?t=1294852497 major in the sounds video, did you?

Yes, you've got a point. Korosus understands what I was getting at, and puts it better:

In short, while other updates might have given more raw information, this update felt like the greatest hint thus far of the 'flavor' of the game... A more revealing and truer indication of the finer details Beth is putting into Skyrim than those before it. For one, It firms up my belief that dialogue will be greatly improved from both Oblivion and Fallout 3. Or that dragon shouts and voiceovers should indeed be distinctive and not gimmicky. So while, yes, a map is nice (though really says nothing about the game...), this is nicer for me.

Oh absolutely. The tone of the game is what sets the game apart, since any game can boast good combat. This is what makes me so drawn to Morrowind, and it looks like Skyrim will have just as rich a setting.

The dragon voice should be dark. Deep.

Something like Sovereign in Mass Effect but that sounds more "real" and less like a computer. That would be pretty good for when the dragons speak their language I think.

No, a higher voice would be best, keeping the electrical sound of sovereign.

Where is this Dwemer Centurion everyone's talking about? I watched the videos and didn't find anything. Which video is it in?

the first video in the sounds of skyrim, he explains how he made metallic sounds and such, on his screen is the new dwemer centurian

Quoted from a post I made in a redundant topic:

I actually had a lot of problems loading the videos... it would only load like one or two at a time, I actually had to go to Youtube for some of them. However, I deeply and thoroughly enjoyed them. Aside from the sheer awesomeness of it, I liked little things like showing the Dwemer Sphere Centurion and talking about Max Von Sydow's thoughts on voice acting for the game.

Also, I have to kind of wonder... If the singing is in the Dragon language, which is this uber way of talking that blasts the crap out of everyhting, is this choir like destroying the recording studio with their singing? Just sayin' :P

I really don't get why 90% of you want old british guys to be the voice of the dragons.

It's so cliche and boring, I want a dragon that sounds like an animal, fierce and [censored] dangerous, snarling like it's gonna' rip my face off and burn my corpse.

Not some [censored] intellectual posh guy.

Also, I just gotta ask... who's working on translating the extended theme so far?

That picture confirmed my belief in the series. I watched Valhalla Rising yesterday, and then saw the picture in the clip this morning. If you draw your inspiration for a videogame from a movie such as Valhalla Rising (99% of the videogame developers won't even be able to see more than a quarter hour of that movie), then you are serious about your profession, and about your series in general.

Btw, go see that movie. It's amazing.

Much better to have these interviews with actual developers instead of always having Todd Howard or Pete Hines talk about how awesome explosions are

And Dwemer Sphere FTW, I just hope that's not his final texture, he's supposed to be bit more golden. Also, I hope this means we'll be seeing the Dwemer Centurion again.

Exactly, I was so happy to see them draw inspiration from that movie, it really caught the rough cold world perfectly... Also one of Mads mikkelsens better roles lately :P

@Lord Grievous Doesn't look like it has a texture at all, but it's simply the base grey you always use before applying texture

Incredible.

Mark Lampert is jaw-droppingly amazing.

I followed the interviews with Mark Lampert from Fallout 3 and I thought "He really needs to stick around Bethesda Game Studios - at least for the next Elder Scrolls game; because he is THE BEST sound designer anyone could have. He really understands what we as gamers would want to hear in these varied situations!"

And now, here he is - working on TESV: Skyrim - and we could not be in better hands!

Everything he says about sound design is exactly what I would have wanted to hear the Sound Designer working on an Elder Scrolls game say about the subject.

Mark Lampert - you are Awesome Sauce for the ears! :foodndrink: :foodndrink: :foodndrink: :foodndrink: :foodndrink:

Maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1QvI_llE0 should take a stab at voicing a dragon...

Yes http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/98f5325447.jpg http://movie-poster.ws/movies/wallpaper/scifi/fanart/raze.jpg would be a good choice. I digged his http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY9tZo9YAbs&NR=1 in his role as Raze and he would do a good job for one of the dragons voice in Skyrim.

A less mechanical and more magical sovereign or harbinger would fit very well.

I also like how it's implied that we're back to "kill anybody," the return of centurions confirming my theory about the Dwemer Exiles, and I just love all this "how-tos of Game development" I've been looking for everywhere.

or this... I like the idea of multiple voices for different dragons though so maybe get a different actor for each. These suggestions are all good.

I watched that movie on Netflix the other night too. They got that free one month deal going on right now. I was looking for some kind of Viking themed movie so I could imagine Skyrim while watching it and the scenery in it was awesome. The overall movie was a little different. Not bad but different. I enjoyed it though. The storyline was very interesting but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to see it yet. There wasn't a whole ton of action but that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0NfPuwBtLk&t=2m8s was epic. (*spoiler might not want to watch the link if you don't want scenes from the movie spoiled)
