New Idea For Brink

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 5:43 am

I agree a mapmaker would be awesome, although what kind of features one could expect is anyone's guess. I doubt full cutscenes could be animated within the editor itself, although making it posible to import animations created in other tools would really make such an editor shine. The one thing I am worried is how the inclusion of primary/secondary objectives would/could be handled (and their possible use for xp farming?).

In the end, an editor would help keep the upcoming Brink community alive longer, so I'm all in favor of it!

I'm pretty sure if Splash Damage did release an editor, they would think of a way to guard against this (i.e. the XP awarded cannot exceed this amount; the objective must be this far away), so it would have to be delayed for quite a while to prevent against possible XP farming.

Maybe you could only use it for Private matches? That sounds fair, and then no XP balancing is required.

People are going to find ways to farm no matter what precautions SD takes, so I don't think removing worthwhile features just to prevent it is the best idea. Whats the worst that can happen? Someone farms to the level 20 level cap in an hour instead of a few days, and has to play against a bunch of experienced lvl 20 players with no experience of their own.

Wasn't there such an editor for a recent RPG?

like i can see a forge type of thing like halo but making a objective based map starting from scratch would be really hard to do

people have made thousands of objective based maps for W:ET w/GTKRadiant and lots for ET:QW, it isn't that big a problem

a mapmaker would be pointless because even if they had one it wouldnt be that great because they didnt have the time to make a decent one and besides i would rather be actually be playing the game instead of making a dumb map

There are plenty of people willing and able to make good maps. No mapmaker would be a horrible decision. As Nail said, they made thousands of maps for RTCW, W:ET and some of them were really really popular. (Venice, Supply Depot, Caen, ...)

For you it might be so. Not true for others.

There's going to be multiple camouflages available for the guns. Besides, custom camouflaged guns would put more of a stress on the game because all of the other players will have to download the camos to actually see them.

Most likely, one of the main reasons not to put a custom painter in the game would also be to prevent people from creating profane content or anything inappropriate (pictures of nudity, sixist/racist/hateful slogans, etc).

I don't want to see a guy running around with a picture of a naked woman on his t-shirt, or a freak with red armbands bearing Swastikas on a white circle :verymad:

Yes to the mapmaker, not because i will use (i tried it once and found out is not really for me) but i have a couple of friends who could spend countless hours making maps

Not really interested in a race mode to be honest :unsure2:

Well, there's a reason the ESRB doesn't rate online content. But wanting to limit people's customization options because you might not want to see what they would come up with is rather silly.

Oh, really?

They took snipers out because it ruins some people's enjoyment of the game.
They took OHKs out because it ruins some people's enjoyment of the game.

They most definitely would NOT go out of their way to make sure you might end up playing against others dressed as KKK, SS, or any other kind of hate group. (And before you mention skinheads being possible, not every bald guy is a skin, and not every skin is a white supremacy [censored]... However, someone with a t-shirt that reads "KKK the only good niggah's eating my boot for breakfast" really has no place in this game.)

You could pick just about anything and claim to be offended by it. I suppose it's just a matter of personal principles. I'd rather just not play with someone or something that offended me rather than vying to limit someone's options based on my will.

I'm guessing you avoid playing WW2 shooters?

A create your own map feature might actually be pretty interesting. Even if it was only a block based enviroment it could be pretty cool. A map doesn't actually have to have a story behind it if it's a custom made map. People like playing game's for the arenas they can play in, not so much the story of the map. I don't believe that this will be incorporated into brink because it wasn't promised and the develepors don't want to delay the game another year... Cool idea tho

No, and find that argument pretty petty, actually. There's a huge difference between vivid imagery taken in and out of context.
Handcuffs on a policeman's belt don't depict the same idea as ones on a bedpost.
A zombie toy doll might be worth a laugh for some, but definitely not for a woman who just went trough a stillbirth.
A Nazi officer's outfit in an historical recreation has not the same impact as one, say, in a Synagogue.

Displaying hate related imagery out of context just for the sake of pissing people off is tasteless. SD went to great length to let people not have to deal with douchebags and other irritaters when playing online : you can turn mics off and let the game handle intra-team conversations. However what's the point if anyone can walk around with any hate-filled message written over their tshirt?

Am I against the use of Nazi imagery in W:ET? Hell no. In Brink? Definitely.

Yeah but you're not even talking about just hate-filled messages. you said you didn't want to see a naked woman on someone's shirt either. It sounds to me like you're in favor of censorship for your own personal sensibilities.

Censorship isn't all bad. I'd prefer it than seeing pictures of nvde women, animals going at it, guys touching themselves, and other things that people put in customizable objects like say a Black Ops Emblem.....

Censorship is a slippery slope that is held to the whims and sensibilities of a typically prudish minority. It's better to just have the option of free association than to deny people the right of self-expression. The internet isn't all that censored in this country. How often do you find yourself running into animals going at it because of that?
