New IGN article combat bummer

Post » Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:34 pm

a recent ign article discussing their hands on demo of skyrim gave a lot of encouraging information about the game. but, unfortunately, it also states that the combat was "still far from the feel of an action game"

which kinda svcks in my opinion. i was hoping the game would have the visceral impact of an action game but it seems like my fears that it will be floaty like oblivion have come to fruition.

on an up note, the article also seems to indicate that there will be much more depth to the perk system that we previously anticipated.

Im sure it'll be great in game. Regardless though, IGN is good for news, and the occassional review. Their editorials, previews, and often reviews are generally crap.

As expected, after selecting a race there's a spread of sliders that pop up onscreen to tweak the appearance. There are as basic as selecting nose height to as detailed as adding 'laugh lines', coloring cheeks and giving the Dark Elf one red eye and one grey. Then it's off into a world that looks, at least on Xbox 360, miles better than Oblivion did back in 2006.

That sounds way more detailed than OB's character creation system. I don't think we've heard anything about this before.
In a dusty corner of an inn is an alchemy apparatus where I can mash together reagents, flowers and plants plucked from fields, to form potions.

Wasn't expecting to see this. Maybe we can only craft potions at set locations now rather than carrying our apparatus?
Points don't need to be used immediately, so it's possible to store them up across levels in case, at the outset, I haven't yet decided the type of character I want to be.

Didn't know this.

I never pay attention to Gamespot, IGN, Destructiod, Joystick or any of those socalled game sites because they are all [censored]e. the only time ill take a G4 review at face value is when its done by adam sessler or morgann webb because they write decent reviews and serious about it. And well as they say, you cant spell Ignorance without IGN

Yeesh what's with the bashing of.. Well everything. As soon as anyone says anything negative about skyrim, it seems that everyone starts attacking other games that have NOTHING to do with the conversation, or skyrim.

Aside from that, reviews generally are supposed to look at negatives. Its best to point out any potential negatives so you are aware of them before paying money no?

I don't want Skyrim to play like God of War.

I've been waiting for a comparison like this rather than COD lol.

But umm if combat was satifying enough for me previous TES games and they are improving it then...

THE REALLY BAD:

All the combinations I try fail, so I steal a few things out of frustration and am promptly met by a guard that wants to escort me to jail.

Dear god no.

The good:

I slash at innocent chickens and shoot fire at pursuing guards as they try to chase me down for breaking the law.

Thus far it sounds like Oblivion's inexcusably horrendous omniscience AI for guard is back, but they can at least be killed. Dear god Bethesda, did you really leave omniscience guard AI in this game? Please, please say it isn't so.

Lol realistic physics like Halo? Sure jumping 15 feet into the air is realistc

15 feet into the air isn't realistic. But the way in which they do it in halo is. We are talking about physics not what's humanly possible.

I agree. If psychic guards are back I will consider not getting Skyrim. They ruined oblivion.

People like IGN contribute to the downfall of good, meaningful, games.

Agreed. Plus, personally I dont care for the whole sword and shield combat. Im more of a stealth player

Ruined it? Son, they made Oblivion. Without guards, I don't think the game would have been near as fun as it was for me.

Besides, out of all the things OB didn't do ideally...the guards?

Anyway, first I would like to point out FO3. People got rather upset when they caught you stealing their stuff - but the town guard were in no way all knowing. Now ask yourself, does this man sound like he tried at all to be sneaky when he stole the items in question? He stole out of frustration, only because his potions failed to brew properly.

He probably grabbed the first things he saw right infront of the inn owner so he called the guard.

In the article it indicates he stole things out of frustration - did it say he did this stealthily? No - with the "frustration" added I'm sure he just started picking stuff up. I should hope a guard comes along in that situation.

This I can agree with. The IGN guy sounded like a newb. Just like most of their writers.
