New Interview from Edge

Post » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:01 am

hahahahahahhahahahahaha.... Obsidian ruined fallout? Are you joking? The consensus is that Bethesda after acquiring the rights for the fallout franchise ruined Fallout. The Black Isle devs at obsidian would have loved to keep it original. Amongst the original fallout fans, New Vegas was liked much more than the washington DC spin-off Bethesda developed.

Chances are high ZeniMax will use their usual methods to buy out Obsidian and if that happens, seeing them develop some TES games would not be surprising. Besides, last time I checked it was Bethesda that was removing features, game mechanics and over simplifying the Elder Scrolls franchise, not Obsidian or anyone else. Obsidian as a general rule of thumb would resist such over simplification if they had creative control.

Well seeing as how fallout 3 outsold the original fallouts I would say that the consensus among the original fans isnt worth that much.

Exactly. But not only this, Fallout 3 sold more copies than Oblivion, yet the majority of people claim Oblivion is better.

Thats because Bethesda is more popular and more people game these days.

But the FPS/RPG genre outstrips the Turnbased strategy game, no offence but it svcks

I guess that makes Wii Sports the greatest videogame in history.

I'd have to say no. Not because I don't think they are capable, but because the two studios have vastly different vision. The artistic vision, direction and overall game design philosophies are too different internally for Obsidian to make a TES game IMO, fundamentally it just wouldn't feel right. Sort of like how it doesn't feel right when someone drives your car, they are not going to drive it like you or care for it as you do.

Would anyone want a TES game from Obsidian?

It's a shame that New Vegas was bogged down so heavily by Bethesda's ancient Gamebryo tech and bugs upon release. Those folks really are the rightful owners of the Fallout IP by birthright (or at least Avellone is), and the writing and atmosphere of New Vegas is far superior to Fallout 3 - at least in my opinion. I'm biased and played FO1/2 first, so...

In any case however, I think Bethesda should stick to what they do best, which is the Elder Scrolls. Let Obsidian focus on Fallout full-time and Bethesda on TES full-time. That would be theb est, if you ask me.

Call of duty outsells every other shooter, yet it's probably one of the worst shooters ever produced. Fallout 3 IS better than oblivion, however New vegas provides a much better story, and more character choice. Fallout 3 is another one of Bethesda's follow the yellow brick road stories, they REALLY REALLY need to move past this.

I like Fallout 3 better because I played it before Oblivion. That's why I am looking forward to Skyrim, because I think that it will be different to Oblivion. For months a vocal minority were attacking Beth on their direction with Skyrim, as though it was going to be worse than Daggerfall and Morrowind. I have the exact opposite view, and everything that Todd Howard has said confirms my opinion.

Why Bethesda would ever want to not keep TES internal would be beyond me. I don't see that happening, and hope it doesn't happen.

I'd rather Obsidian focus on Fallout. New Vegas is a great game and I look forward to OWB.

But if they could pull off a spin off game that would be cool.

Isn't it Beth that completely changed how the original FOs worked with FO3? And now thats its the other way around everyone gets pissed?
Either way I wouldn't mind seeing which direction they go.

Have Obsidian remake Battlespire, Dawstar, and those other handheld TES games.

I am not a big fan of Obsidian but I did enjoy Fallout New Veags.......did I think it was better than Fallout 3? HELL NO!

If they let them create a TES game I have no issue with that as long as it is not a numbered series. I would most likely get the game knowing that it would not even come close to the RPG's Bethesda creates.

I agree with this. I loved Oblivion and Fallout 3 but one of the weakest parts of both I felt were the main story. I only completed them once and after half way it was literally because I wanted to get it done out the way (for completions sake) not because I was really interested. New Vegas I was actually interested in all the way through and is fun to complete multiple times because of all the different ways it can play out.

Let them make a spin-off, maybe a few non-TES fantasy games so they can settle into the genre before making a main event, a crappy TES game could destroy Bethesda/

Meh, with how much the series has been changing lately I would actually like to see where another studio might take it, whilst keeping the same themes incorporated (open world, do what you want, be who you want).

I wouldn't like them to create another 'Adventures' or 'Legends' game though, that would just be pointless. If they were to do one it might as well be just like the rest of the series, but still an offshoot, just like New Vegas wasn't FO4, but it still wasn't some linear action adventure game.

I haven't played FO1 or 2, but I do know that FO:NV was much better than FO3(After the bugs were accounted for). Everything affected something else. It was actual choice and consequence. I sided with the NCR through almost the entire main quest until they told me to wipe out the BoS. I like the BoS. I was partway down the BoS bunker stairs when I decided, "Screw the NCR" and http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TakeAThirdOption.

That said, they write some decent storylines, but they should probably use beth devs to develop it.

Nice interview.

I like Obsidian well enough (they know how to write; a rarity), but I wouldn't want any studio but Bethesda Game Studios working on the main/numbered TES games. Adventure RPG spin-offs set in the TES setting, developed by Obsidian, though? I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want that.

I agree with this alot.

Let Obsidian do the story, and let beth handle the game.

And then they work out everything inbetween. but since their two totally different studios it would probrably be a massacre if not lead well into a single defining direction.

What the hell am I reading?

Obsidian killed Fallout? New Vegas linear?

Fallout 3 superior?

WHAT?!

FO3 was the one that had about one ending, one major joinable faction, and the ending was so awful they had to make a new one. New Vegas was the one with a truckload of joinable factions with multiple unique endings for each depending on player action.

What do you people think linear means?

If they can release a game that wont break, maybe they can try. I prefer the Bethesda Fallout style over obsidian, regardless of who owned what originally.(Fallout 2 is also kinda busted) I will take the mesmatron,AK style rifle, katana, and crazy supermarket's of fallout 3 to FNV's lackluster interpretation of the Mojave wasteland.
