New interview with Todd

Post » Tue Oct 26, 2010 4:52 pm

Bethesda Game Studios have better quality than any other game developer in the industry (except for maybe BioWare). That being said, when horse armor was released, most developers were just releasing "theme packs" still (at least for the Xbox). I personally didn't mind it, as the armor looked cool for one, and we eventually got bigger and better content over time. Everyone has to start somewhere, and if you are going to waste money on any game developer's DLC, it might as well be Bethesda.

That was my point exactly. ^_^

did not like how todd says that they start over with each game in a tone like it was a good thing.

I'm kind of tired of the horse armor jokes. It was their first time testing the waters of DLC and it gets old when people hold Oblivion to the standards of how games do things today. People tend to forget Oblivion was a launch window game when nobody knew how to handle all these new systems the right way. <_<

That does not take away from the fact that the horse armor DLC was not good. trying something for the first time is a relatively valid excuse yes, but a bad product is a bad product.

I'm not saying it was great. But it's certainly not bad enough to continue making fun of that decision for five years.

I feel warm and fuzzy with Todd's response about the "lore masters" . Gotta keep us lore junkies satisfied! And perhaps a shout out to some sites.
It is, actually. We have some guys here who have been anointed "lore-masters", who can usually point out mistakes quickly. We actually use the fan wiki online a lot. It's pretty amazing. They did a better job cataloguing it than we did!

espeacially true since it was that way for almost all other dlc. I think what made it stand out to TES fans is that they had been used to MW mods and how flexible and qualitive the mods had been so seeing horse armor was kinda shocking.

I actually feel this is a strength, not a weakness. Otherwise, Bethesda risks turning the TES world into another COD: series of games.

I do wish they would do more for the feel of continuity between games, but if you take the time to read in-game books, you find that it isn't as bad as you might imagine. There are references to the other games in the newer games, it's just fairly subtle.

the series doesn't have to stay completely the same like COD but it doesn't have to scrap almost all of the tried and true mechanics of the game. instead of tearing out the foundation every time you renovate your house why not build upon it. I am not saying OB was bad or that SK won't be good either (I think they will be better than any other rpg that comes out around then and after) i am merely disapointed when things are tossed out when they don't work perfectly (like some skills that many feel are useless, if that skill is useless dont throw it out, make it relevent, other wise you are limiting many ways in which people can interact in the world) OB's potential after MW was astronomical and I was disapointed that there were not as many improvements, I am worried that it will be the same with SK.

the series doesn't have to stay completely the same like COD but it doesn't have to scrap almost all of the tried and true mechanics of the game.

They don't. You still play the game (largely) from 1st person. You still have a reliance on skills, and you increase your skills by what you use. There's still the 'do what you want, when you want' gameplay focus.

What tried and true mechanics have they scraqed? Well, you could argue the randomly-make-your-action-ineffective (aka, dice roll) mechanics, but many people say that change was a good thing because it doesn't fit with an action-based first-person perspective, which is something that's also remained through the series. The mechanics of the game haven't changed because they removed some skills or weapon types. There's still more than a dozen skills spread over the three archetypes (warrior, mage, thief).

I found this VERY interesting:

I think any place would be fair game when the time came. Games and technology move on, there's so much to be explored again, in a different way, even if it's already been in a previous game.

It would be nice to go back to High Rock or even Morrowind with the new technology.

I like how he admits that they actually use the ES fansite wiki because its better catalogued than theirs is. At least he was honest.

It was a pretty nice interview, though it could've been longer.

I like the question where it states what's your biggest regret and they have a picture of Horse Armor next to it

Yes as he said in another interview it was a mistake largest mistake was to release it first, had they sold fighter stronghold first and horse armor much later nobody would complain much at it was clearly optional and a weak expansion.

I wouldn't mind that at all. There are some titles I never got to/never will be able to play from the series. If they re-release them, even with dated graphics...I'd still buy them :)
