New Map

@verbal - I think that's exactly how it works

Is your character a cyborg who can see a bar telling him exactly how much magicka he has left, and a digital catalogue of his inventory, and the ability to instantaneously know the name of the person he's looking at even if he's never seen him before in his entire life? Non of this user interface stuff makes any sense!

You don't like it because you think it's not in line with the aesthetic of a fantasy game. Just say that next time. I like it lots. Much better than the crappy and largely worthless maps in Morrowind and Oblivion.

Excellent point! :cookie:

This (kinda) First of all, local maps are 2D
all menus and UI need to be easy to use, read, and get though and out of so you can get back to playing the game.
Id rather have menu that work then ones that fit the aesthetics of the game (and there not really that far off, the grayness works IMO.)

THIS is a serious question.... your character's map only had major cities......WHY?????And Where did you get the map???? RP aside, You didn't exist in Cyrodiil until you woke up in jail...Where did you find that map.....especially one with NO marking on it than major cities..... Cartographers tried to make as detailed maps as possible.....Why did yours lack anything that wasn't a city..... it not like it reveals every location to you instantly....even if there's not fog.....you still can't see the entrance to a dungeon..

EDIT: @ verbal Thats exactly how i thought it worked when i saw the demo....i didn't know people thought differently until i came here.

It doesn't make any sense. Does your character have an eagle companion that flies overhead? I would prefer finding areas myself, personally.

Plus a paper map just seems more fitting, and it would make objectives visible on your map more realistic. An NPC could mark your map, for example, if they are trying to help you find a certain cave. With this map? It is like GPS.

I could mentally draw a map of my town and most of my city in my head if I wanted. Just imagine that's what you're doing when you pan out, and not looking down at a paper map. You've been somewhere? You remember.. you don't need a paper map for 16 square miles of land.

I don't hate the map because it's new. I dislike it because it makes no sense, and seems unnecessarily gimmicky.

Your inventory screen doesn't make sense either, I never see complaints about that.

The 3D map is unnecessarily gimmicky.

Yes, a UI is necessary in a game - but only to display information that can't be displayed in game.

Things like health, stamina, etc... are all difficult to visually convey - you can't feel what your character is feeling - and so that data needs to be displayed in an artificial UI.

However, a map and a compass are only useful visually. It would be incredible if the map was an equippable item - especially in the Skyrim control scheme.

You could equip "map and torch," or "map and dagger." Or even better, "map and compass" one in each hand. I should be open to attack when looking at a map, or trying to navigate through a mountain or forest...

I should be able to stop hiking, get out my map and compass, find a landmark on the horizon that orients me towards my next waypoint, then put away those tools and keep hiking, or just keep my compass and sword out - to equally focus on my two goals at the moment. 1. get to my destination. 2. don't get killed along the way.

UI elements should be reserved for "only" what is necessary. Everything else can be in game..... (inventory is okay, i guess... i don't really want to have to visually rummage through my backpack to find something....my least favorite part of back-country hiking...)

Waste of resources. Same with 3D inventory. Let me drop quest items, and I'll inspect them in real time with the holding feature. And if I lose them in tall grass, who's fault is that? Mine, so let me drop them.

Weren't 2D ingame mapes also confirmed? I mean, that would be the most ideal. Both sides getting what they want.

You know, that's not a bad idea. There should be a purshasable paper map that you could keep in your inventory and hotkey it to use it fast or just go into your inventory and look at it manually instead of the new GPS thing. The new map KILLS roleplay value to me..

I think it'll be interesting to see how it is used.

While I always miss the function that was in Morrowind (I think..) where you could add your own notes to the map, I'm eager to see how this map works.

One would argue it isn't. As if the 3D inventory was really all that hard to set up. As someone who likes the extra dimension of such things I'm for it.

One could argue BGS's resources are wasted in a fairly D&D/Tolkien ripoff of a game TES has been hyped up to be, lore rich or not.

Or that Morrowind was a severely dumbed down Daggerfall. Oh wait. That one isn't an opinion

Again all to opinion.

Personally I feel resources aren't being wasted by freshening UI elements up and Bethesda hasn't resorted to killing an inventory like Bioware.

I don't like Bethesda but I can give them props for that.

Rather resources are being wasted on other things I feel.

Oh that looks pretty cool, and if the fog for areas you haven't been seems ok. Thanks for the link.

Skyrim just borrowed Civ 5's map.

Personally I would rather have a paper map that I can actually draw on myself then a UAV but thats me..

Its not opinion. 2D map would take less resources. Not to mention the 3D map, and the font just doesnt fit the setting. Not really sure who that new map is supposed to appeal to.
