New Map

What do you guys think of the new map they showed us back at E3?
I didn't mind it until just today I thought about it and realized how much it could ruin exploration.

Personally? I hate it.

I'd prefer the paper map from Oblivion, I actually thought the paper map from Oblivion was an upgrade from Morrowind. But, we get Google Nirn instead, because it's prettier.

From the looks of that demo certain places would be clouded off?

I don't hate the map because it's new. I dislike it because it makes no sense, and seems unnecessarily gimmicky.

i don't like it. i assume all the fog on the map means that the player hasn't found those locations yet, so with the excessive fog, it's going to be hard to tell where landmarks are like rivers and woods. so i think i will find myself using the physical map that comes with preordered copies.

I was making a joke on how every time something new is announced it seems to get a flood of hate.

It doesn't make any sense. Does your character have an eagle companion that flies overhead? I would prefer finding areas myself, personally.

Plus a paper map just seems more fitting, and it would make objectives visible on your map more realistic. An NPC could mark your map, for example, if they are trying to help you find a certain cave. With this map? It is like GPS.

I know. My response was meant to inform you that most complainers have reasons for their whining other than "it's new".

As long as the weather and clouds don't cover anything I'm good with it. It (3D) makes it more palatable (Maybe or maybe not in the edible sense) and neat!

to me it seemed fairly affective, one issue i always had with oblivion was the fact that if there was an unmarked location you wanted to refind, lets say a nice selection of alchemy ingrediant, you had to haphazardly wanted about roughly were on the plain map you remember were it was, the Skyrim map should help remedy this.

I don't like it. Fairly immersion breaking and at that massively unnecessary. A paper map can convey the same information and is far better for immersion. This games supposed to have a rugged feel right? Why the hell are the menus clean? Why is the map a magical Dwemer GPS thats available to every sort of character?

Not that this is relevant I'll just up and say that I feel most of their ideas regarding the UI and the map were taken in the wrong direction.

Honestly with all the changes to TES games and all of the threads about "Dumbing down", the map is really the only thing that has annoyed me so far. It looks like they added it just because they could, because it looks fancy.

It's a videogame. In a fantasy world. Not every single thing needs to "make sense".

Weren't 2D ingame mapes also confirmed? I mean, that would be the most ideal. Both sides getting what they want.

Must agree with those who prefer a traditional map. I want a map that feels like, well, looking at a map. Vikings who use Google Earth and GPS locators to get around seem a bit out of place to me.

I still love the maps in games like Thief, where they really appear and behave like actual maps, not even showing your current location.

Indeed. However, in this case, there's a simple (much simpler, in fact) alternative that DOES make sense, which makes a lot of people happy.

Thank you for clarifying this, I was under the impression that I would be teleported to the land of Skyrim come November.

Seriously though, by making sense I mean it should fit in with the rest of the gameworld's design. The entire new UI in general I am not a fan of. This is the land of the Nords, and we get the UI of an iPad.... It just doesn't seem fitting to me. Again, this is just my opinion.

In all of the polls on the 3D map, the results show that more people like it then those that don't. Local maps are still 2D.

Wasn't it recently confirmed that they are, in fact, 3D? Not that that matters nearly as much.

The map in Morrowind was basically the same as Skyrim's. An overhead view of the area, the only real difference is of course the updated graphics and being real-time.

I really liked having a paper map in Oblivion. I know it sounds ridiculous for me to want to RP in the G, considering it is... an RPG.
