new mesh/texture too shiny

Post » Sun Dec 19, 2010 8:22 am

I've been working on some mods and one of the problems I have come across is that some of the lighter colored textures always seem to reflect too much light.

For example here is a white draqe I have made as seen in nifskope:

But here is how it looks in the GECK:

Same normal map with a darker texture:

It seems that lighter color textures always reflect more light. I tried tweaking the normal map and made the alpha as dark as possible, is there a different way to do this? Tried messing with some of the settings in Nifskope as well, but couldn't figure it out. Can anyone help shed some light on this issue?

Try adjusting the normal maps alpha channel, the darker the alpha the less shiny it will be.

EDIT: Nevermind I completely missed that part of your post. Try checking it in game perhaps?

What about lowering the Glossiness property in the NIMaterialsProperty node?

Oh maybe you accidentally change the emitted glow property under materials too.

The glossiness property was actually one of the first things I had tried. It didn't seem to have any effect, even when set to 0.0000.

In-game it looks the same as in GECK. Anything above low ambient lighting and it glows.

Edit: What emitted glow property? The Emit Multi? It's at 1.0 and 0.0 didn't seem to have any effect either.

Also all of the "Color3" settings are at full black (#000000)

What are you using to make the textures? GIMP is opposite from what I have heard, white is 'dark'.

For me, when I save the normal map texture, I make the brightness 'dark' which forces the alpha to be dark along with it. Since its the normal map, this will have no adverse effects on the look of the object in game.

I'm using photoshop, so as I understand dark is dark for alphas. And alphas are on a separate channel as well. I'm not sure if there's any way to dim it beyond how it is now, so i went ahead and released the v2 update to my draqes resource. All should be well, so long as no one wants to put a light in front of the draqes :shocking: Guess I'll just have to lean more toward darker colors when possible. :flamed:

Thanks for the help, I'm really just surprised there isn't a way to control it better.
