New MMO by another company ? will it effect Fallout online ?

Post » Wed Jun 17, 2009 2:37 am

Just read two articles about another big company out there that has at the minute the biggest MMO title going, we all know what it is I dont have to say it, but over the past few years they have been pumping money into a new secret MMO, they have ruled out it being anything to do with there current MMO or there release of there current sequal.

But they have not however ruled out the Post Apocolyptic genre as the basis for this new MMO in the making ?

If it is some falloutish, what effect will it have on Fallout Online ????

A worried Fallout fan awaits  :?

It doesn't have to be a negative effect, lets say this mmo turns out to be a major hit AND it is a post-apocalyptic world.

Atm I don't think there is any real major post apocalyptic mmo's (correct me if I'm wrong) but if this turns out to be a hit it will draw in people to these kinds of games. AND lets say that gamesass fallout mmo comes out a (few) year later, then the attention can be directed to fallouts mmo, this is a oneway ticket :P

Either people who really liked blizzards mmo will flock to gamesass due to that they have maybe already done most of the things in that mmo so they want to try this out OR people will still play blizzards just because its so fun.

Or blizzards mmo will have no real affect anyway... or something else happens.. too many possibilities :) Image

I'd just like to point out, Blizzard makes non MMO games too, they're pretty good from what I hear. Kotick in his statement doesn't say anything about an MMO, that's just what the writer is guessing. ;)

Was this just announced? I've seen Blizzard hint in many job openings for a long time now about another MMO. And why wouldn't they make another MMO? It's the best source of income for both developers and publishers these days, with all the rental games and Gamestops selling used games.

PA themed? Don't think so... They need to catch the average gamers attention with that amount of money being put into it. PA doesn't apply to a lot of people. My money is on a sci-fi-ish theme...

there is a very fallout type mmo out already. Its FPS based with a very Eve stats type system. but it aint fallout :) War, War never changes!
Why?
Because,
'War is the continuation of politics and policy with the admixture of other means..'

Fallen Earth springs to mind, but I dislike it simply because the opening sees you riding a quad bike through a tunnel as it Ass-plodes. Kinda killed the immersion and the 'Fallout' experience of been against it all with only your trusty BB gun at your side.

If it was a post-apocalyptic MMO I think Fallout Online would be DOA. They dont have the resources or the market share that Blizzard has. I mean they would really really have to take it up a notch to compete with the company that has the most popular MMO in the market out there right now.

However its pure speculation that it is a post apocalyptic MMO its just random musing of a writer. The only reason one can say it might be is because its the only world they dont have fingers in, Sci-Fi= Starcraft, Gothic Horror= Diablo, Fantasy= Warcraft.

They also don't have fingers in modern / contempory, russian revolution, stone age, high-magic multi-planar fantasy, WWII flight sims, bloodstream-based anti-viral warfare, etc etc you get the point.

You could quite literally make an MMO where players select and play as pieces of fruit and as long as it was dynamic and engaging and rewarding then people would flock to it. Yes, another post-apocalyptic MMO would threaten P:V13, but only very marginally moreso than any other type of MMO.

At the end of the day, most people aren't really purists, and will be willing to shift their tastes and adapt to a new setting if it means a significant improvement in quality of gameplay. Competing with other products will be difficult but as my good friend Jane Austin once said, "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a good MMO in possession of a sizeable player base must be in want of some shoddy competition."

Competitors are only bad if their product is better than yours :) Maybe you'll sit and sigh, wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"

I really don't think it will be a problem, even if they end up sharing the same genre, so do an untold number of fantasy games, and it all comes down to the quality of the game.

Well, from what I've seen in Diablo 3 vids I'm not entirely certain Blizzard has the proper ... "mentality" to catch the feel of a post ap world. Unless they plan on making a post apocalyptic fairy-land ;)

Hi I'm new on the forums btw.

Personally I think. If blizzard does have a New MMO on the lines, It's not going to have the correct feel for a Post Apocalyptic game like fallout. I really don't see them having big impact on fallout online. They have a huge fan base of long term players, people who played the originals and alot of money to sling about, but I think what is created will be something that their fans like about their genres. Like every game there are always going to be competitors of a big scale, but as I think this type of game has a very defined feel and you either love it or hate it.

I think that good advertisemant and a high standard in quality is enough to push a game into the spot light, as well as a good community. And if done right will have no trouble in scooping up those fans of the genre

I have been anticipating this game for sometime now and nothing will change that for me. :)

On seond thought, Blizzard do have Leonard Boyarsky - though I think he's involved only in Diablo III

Widely speculated that Starcraft would be Blizzards new MMO.

Much like how Warcraft started as a real-time strategy game and became an MMO, they'd do it with Starcraft.

As far as the Post-Apocalyptic MMOs go, I can only think of Fallen Earth. Most of the people that play Fallen Earth do so because they loved Fallout.

Another giant looming in the distance is Star Wars:ToR. The budget, marketing, and development team there look as though they'll put more pressure on WoWs player-base than any other MMO to date.

What all that means for Fallout Online? More MMO players in the market just mean more willing to try another MMO.

Blizzard needs serious competition. I used to hail them as the King but not so much lately. Their complacency has led them to do things in what I see half assed adding new content that is airbrushed new textures on old models that they had in vanilla. So I hope they do not have the post apocalyptic meme going. With their fan boy backing most any other MMO is hard pressed just to put a dent in the player population and of course you will run into the WoW copy argument although people seem to forget WoW is a copy of EQ/DAOC/Anarchy.
