New to Oblivion Mods

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 10:30 am

So, I've played the bajeebus out of Oblivion and it's various DLC on my brokenbox360. So I figured it's about time I get back into the game on PC and try out mods. I did once, years ago when the game was newish, and my gaming PC burst into flames and I just barely replaced it (truth.... scary eh?) Anyway I only ever had a handful of mods.... Right now the only thing I've installed is the Oblivion Mod Manager. Im thinking about unique landscapes/better cities. All sorts Im just looking for some suggestions for anything/everything. Preferably mods that retain the feel of the game while improving/expanding upon it. Im thinking of downloading OOO or MMM. Something to replace the frog people with better looking people...... blargh there are so many mods. No idea where to start.

I'll try to help you with....

Spoiler
My (increasingly!) generic copy/pastes:

Have you played Oblivion already?
What sort of things interest you?
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?)
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.)
When did you leave?
What did you not like about Oblivion? What did Oblivion not have or need more of?
Male or female character?

I would definitely install the Unofficial Patches for Oblivion,SI and the DLC's. ONE good race compilation to try and avoid the eyeball/missing body parts issues. I think you should also install a stable version Wrye Bash as soon as possible version 275 is available as an automatically installed program. Once you know where the components of Bash should go it is easy to manually install the most current version of Wrye Bash and Wrye Python.

I recommend FCOM and (though I haven't tried it out), Nehrim.
I also enjoy Hentai Mania, Unnecessary Violence, and Deadly Reflex (5.0 I think, not the newest)

Here is a list of my favorite mods - they all work well together if installed properly. Oblivion now looks beautiful and I'm getting decent frame rates on my laptop in 1920x1080, all detail settings maxed (and i'm using a Steam installation)

(1) FCOM/Oscuro's/Martigens/Francesco's/Warcry

(2) Real Hunger COBL

(3) Real Thirst

(4) Real Sleep Extended

(5) Bananasplit's Better Cities

(6) Qarl's Texture Pack 3 (4k HD Textures)

(7) Oblivion Graphics Extender v2 (OBGEv2)

(8) ENBSeries Shaders

(9) Advanced Windows Lighting System

(10) Tamriel NPCs Revamped (finally the NPC faces don't look like crap)

(11) Supreme Magicka

(12) Less Annoying Magic Experience (yes they both work together)

(13) Ren's Beauty Pack

(14) HGEC Body Replacer (AA cup is best one)

(15) Elaborate Eyes

(16) Oblivion Stereo Overhaul

(17) Immersive Oblivion (sound mod)

(18) Enhanced Economy

(19) Mystic Elves (playable race)

(20) COBL Races

Step one is to use OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) or Wrye Bash to install your mods. Some mods have OBMM scripts or complicated installations that can be helped by using OBMM or BAIN (Bash Installers). Step two is to use BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software) to sort your load order. Lastly if your mod list is large enough, or you are having compatibility issues, you might need to create something called a Bashed Patch. If you do find yourself needing Wrye Bash (most people do), have a look at these http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230 They will save you some serious pain :)

My computer apparently hate's OOO. After checking my load orders and going through the mods one by one activating and testing, even if OOO is the only thing active when I load up Oblivion it brings up the Bethesda Softworks screen and shuts down..... Kind of odd.... Time to deactivate, delete, and reinstall OOO again I guess...

For OOO have you installed OOO 1.33 and patched with the 1.34beta5 patch? If not Download both, install 1.33 then 1.34 on top of it.

I will try that now thank you... After that I think it's time I figure out Wrye bash and then I'll return to the crazyness I was beginning.... I need to find some good mods to make everyone not look like rotten potato heads....

Best advice: don't load a whole bunch of mods at once. Add one or two at a time and playtest. It's worth going slowly at the outset. It will save you time and headaches down the road.

Absolutely. Whatever you do, make sure you heed this advice. It will almost inevitably save you some headaches.

I also thoroughly recommend upgrading to BAIN for installation/configuration/uninstallation. It's simply better, in a number of ways. Mind you, OBMM is still useful, for things like scripted shader editing. Otherwise though, BAIN will save you so much hassle, in the end, *particularly* if/when you ever want or need to uninstall anything, track overwriting and deal with it; these kinds of things. Once you get used to it, you'll find that it's actually incredibly simple, elegant, and smart. It also makes the above-quoted advice slightly less direly important, funnily enough, because you can roll back anything with ease - however, it's still excellent advice to follow, and tedium is best avoided, at any rate.

The guide to Wrye Bash linked to above is a great start. Also, Tomlong's site is very handy. http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=bain_installation is her page on BAIN installation, for example. But really, the whole site will prove exceptionally useful, I suspect.

Bah Im so clueless.... Trying to figure out Wrye bash right now and trying to figure out how to add the patch for OOO to upgrade it to 1.34 beta5.... SInce OOO is the only thing I can find that's Crashing my system.... I'll get the hang of it, Im just so out of touch with using my PC for anything other then simple games. lol. ANd Im keeping it to 2 mods per start up... so it's only a 50/50 figuring out which broke me. lol. Thank you guys so much for the patience though.

Ya... OOO apparently doesn't like my computer at all. No matter what I do I can't get it to run with OOO Activated.... I've updated it to 1.34beta 5 I tried downloading a bain version and installed that one... nothing. Is there a possible issue with Windows 7 pcs somehow?

If you're running Windows 7, you should install Oblivion anywhere but inside Program Files. It's a UAC problem. Perhaps that's your situation?

Hmmm Maybe. I'll try and reinstall tonight. Though Im not sure why the game would have issues running from Program files with OOO when it runs just fine without...... bizarre.

I got win7 on my laptop, couldn't get it with XP, I could pick Vista though but that's worse...
The first thing that struck me in winblows 7 is the UAC stuff. I had used XP exclusively until then. Funny how something that seemingly important (?) gets disabled FIRST!

But even on XP I install it in C\games because I sometimes have to install some junk app which then installs more junk apps, so basically the entire program files folder is filled with badly written apps that don't want to be outside program files... and junk apps. It's my junk filter :)

Anyway, have patience young modawan and may the magicka be with you

Ya Im going to do a fresh install tonight and rethink how Im doing this... I scanned my old hard drive from old laptop that I used to play oblivion with mods back when it was new.... My load order was ridiculous and I don't recall having any real problems beyond a few mods that just weren't finished... For some reason Wrye Bash doesn't like my computer also and keeps only partially installing.

Because the UAC protects the programs in Program Files from tampering. Adding mods is (in the mind of the UAC) tampering. So, it causes problems that a plain vanilla install won't have.

What could it possibly overwrite if it's the only mod you're adding? Sounds suspicious. Did you reinstall from scratch, i.e. delete the Oblivion folder? Also - difficult to give advice based on the info provided. Which OOO version are you trying to install for example?
