New Oblivion Player! What should I expect?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 5:53 pm

Hey guys, I played this game for a year and a half without the internet. Talk about duh! But I had fun. I didn’t know I was supposed to worry about all that technical stuff and when I later found out that everyone else was, I just shrugged and went on.
This! is what I encourage new players to do. Don′t go on either the wiki or these forums until much later when you already know plenty. Even the general section is a spoiler because from there you get to know many things instead of experiencing them first hand yourself in the game.

I’ve played this game since the spring of 2008 and I still don’t get all this stuff about leveling or not leveling. Seems to me that you should just proceed into the game and take it as it hits you.

If I could go back to the beginning, when the game first came out, I would just play it without consulting friends, neighbors, wikis, or forums. Seems to me, that would add more to your cumulative enjoyment of life than trying to match some elusive predetermined goal.
Wise words indeed :)

I hear you tmar. I am glad that when I first played this game I simply played this game. I did not research it or its systems. My firsr character, Rhoga, had a long adventure, from '06 to late '07, got up into the 30's and had a lot of fun. He was a "mess" of a character, but he was also fun and it was a very cool way to explore the game and the way it works.

However, I'm also glad the game has more than enough depth to be subsequently researched and discussed. There's so many ways one can choose to approach the game, and our characters. The fact that its possible to plan them (or at least guide their growth) is really quite awesome once the game is understood.

Glargg is almost always right. He's a wise fellow. People like him make the forums worth visiting.

Uh-oh. My head is swelling up. I won't be able to get my hat on.

Fortunately I don't have a hat. ;)

Man after reading this I need to dig around for my OB disc. Just did the DB in Skyrim and it just made me miss the OB DB. Luckily It's been long enough since my last play I forget almost everything.

Have fun OP! While Skyrim is beautiful and great in many respects it lacks the substance of its predecessors.

Yeah, a part of me is thinking of returning to Cyrodiil, back when there was an empire, and a good few decades before everything went straight to hell. I'll be ignoring the MQ, thus rendering Cyrodiil in an eternity of peace.

But take care to not touch anything with a red icon. Unlike Skyrim, if you touch anything with a red icon in Oblivion, you're a no good thief and guards will come after you.

I think one of the biggest mistakes I made with Oblivion was looking everything up before I bought it. That said, I still find new things quite a lot. So, try not to look for spoilers and expect to be surprised!

That is the biggest mistake I made before Skyrim came out...

I just discovered something new the other day. I can read red-hand books. As long as I don't take them, I can read them without having the guard come after me. Though I believe in giving the shopkeeper his fair share, and do so by buying books, instead of turning it into a library.

Yep, the level scaling it stupid. When you go into the gates at a high level they are very hard because of the high level enemies.

Just started up Oblivion after spending the last few months in Skyrim and [censored] I love OB. It may not be a better game but I definitely think It's a better Rpg. Once you get used to the different visuals OP you're gonna love OB.

One thing that you very much should expect is for the character that inhabits the world that you visit to grow and develop in ways that you initially never really thought would happen.

Took me awhile to figure this out, too. You can read a book all you want, but as soon as you move it around or take it, that's a crime! HELP THIEF!!!

One of my favourite moments was with the Gray Fox. I moved something in on of the houses he was in and can you believe the audacity of that guy? He got his knickers in a knot and started shouting: THIEF!!THIEF!!
What did I do? The only thing I could do, I lol'ed.

Cant buy some homes do to the person who you need to talk to died.... :-( Ok I go off to Skingrad to buy Rosethorn Hall and I’m told to talk with Shum gro-Yarug. I get a marker of where he is so I go off to find him. Yet I come to find that he is dead outside of the city walls. So I look up bugs on this to see if there are any tips or anything I can do to fix it. When I read the bug form it says this about Shum, Shum will occasionally fall off the bridge to Castle Skingrad and die and that is it. Well sorry bug form but that is not the only way for this guy to die since I found his body outside the city walls nowhere near a bridge as far as I can tell he died by: 1. Walking up a side of a tall hill and walked off it killing himself. 2. Or he was attacked by someone just outside the walls. I don’t know why they made this guy or any others who are killable to be in charge of homes. I think it would have been better if: 1. You could just go to the Jarl of the city or town and ask or buy a home from them. 2. Or a local vendor, who does not go outside of his shop and be able to purchase a home and upgrades from them. 3. Or that the NPC that you can buy a home from will respawned after X amount of days after being killed.

I like your raven too mirocu. Don't you go changing it now. What is a mirocu by the way? I'm curious.

Oh definitely. I never thought I'd see my characters flourish as much as they have. My friend thinks roleplaying is crazy, but everytime I load up Oblivion I get a big smile on my face and know he's wrong. Roleplaying is what makes the game come alive.

Thank you! No I don′t think I will change it. I understand Renee changed hers, Ann looks great! But even so, I miss Saga′s pic a little...
What a mirocu is? If you′ve paid attention you′d know. I have said it once before

Yup, sometimes it's a major bummer. The Cheydinhal house is nice too. Or you can dig around in your saved games and try to fast travel there and speak with him. I find him either hanging out inside Colovian Traders or at the castle.
