New Ores and Materials of Skyrim

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:05 am

I've been thinking about ice as a material for weapons, very fragile but magically kept cool all the time. Ice as a material for armor could work for both light and heavy variants, also magically kept together while not killing the wearer by it's coldness.

I think it would be a great addition to add as many different types of materials for both weapons and armors as possible, letting the player choose from a larger variety of looks.

Some materials that could make a return and some new ones:

Nordic trollbone

Stalhrim (ice)

Adamant

Bonemold

Chitin

Possibly Dragonscale

not really new, but id like to see mithril as a more important armour then it was in oblivion.
has anyone read LoTR? it was an almost impenetrable material, Frodo was stabed in the gut by a cave troll and survived

Yeah we just have to have that material back, would fit perfectly!

@ Sentakai: I totally feel you, mithril should be better than it was in Oblivion, or atleast very very durable, more durable than deadric armor was and yet equal to protection as glass armor, lighter than elven armor :)

I would like to see buildings off glass:) since we had an armour glass in Oblivion I dont see why we cant have buildings.

Not really a new material, but a new way of using it

I'm hoping for a return of adamant and bonemold. And for the most part its not the material but the construction of the armor and weapons that matter, remember The Armorer's Challenge, so i would prefer more styles of armor and weapons rather than materials.

I figured elven armor was just some really good mithril armor. I could be wrong. And if i'm not mistaken ebony is just about the toughest material in Tamriel, not mithril, this isn't LoTR you know.

adamantium is alright, i never liked it tho. bonemold shouldn't be in but you never know.

the armor that should be in and that i hope will be in is chitin

see "ice and chitin" http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ice_and_Chitin

Yeah, this ain't LoTR, but it must have been from there bethesda took the name, I mean LoTR has been around for a good 60 years. It wouldn't have to be the best armor in the game, worth a whole village (as in LoTR), but it doesn't have to be just another armor type either.

@ Indie Soulreaper: I'm not sure how chitin would fit into Skyrim, it always felt like something that belonged to Morrowind, if you understand me.

I was thinking here about weapons and armor made from dragons scale, but that consept was in dragon age and from how I've understood it, the dragons of Skyrim would be turned to ash when they die, meaning it would be impossible to get their scale.

More different types of fur armor too, wolf fur would be grayish, bear fur would be brown or black etc.

@ Finnishboy3 and Gorm417: How could I forget nordic trollbone material, my orc has a helmet made of it in morrowind!

I'll edit the first post with the ideas and suggestions we've come up with so far, so others would have easier to follow what we discuss.

Well if dragons turn into ash when they die how could you get dragonscale armor in MW?

Dragons might have a suicidal bomb with them in Skyrim :P But if dragon scale was in Morrowind, it surely should be available for us in Skyrim too :foodndrink:

I agree with all metals mentioned. Heck, let's have some more included! The more the better right? I think Bethesda missed in Oblivion by taking away some of the metals, and limiting the game with fewer metals. In Skyrim I would like to see some revolutionary, new and exclusive ores and metals - designed just for Skyrim. In my opinion there should be atleast 30 metals, we're already over half-way, so implimenting new metals should be a piece of cake for the Bethesda devs.

well we have 1 new material confirmed, in the art of skyrim there was a person in orc armor, so clearly someone made armor out of an orc

there were ore types, such as glass, eboney (more I think but can't quite remember) in MW and while there were no ores in OB they did introduce mithril to the series. so they got already a number of material to work with.

what I would like to see is the return of Diamonds, and so that we can smith diamond armor. which would be an almost indestructable armor but super expensive and time consuming to create.

[I have been wondering what kind of mining we can expect if it is as sugested will be in skyrim, either MW ore pockets with health that can only be broken with a pick equip, or are we going to see a destructable earth that we dig deeper to reveal new ore in a mine... mine craft basicly. speculations?

I can imagine myself digging ores from mines, the better the ore I'm trying to get, the better the pick axe I would have to use, I mean we had pick axes in Oblivion, but they couldn't be used to anything. Oblivion "mining"svcked as hard as mining can if you ask me :P So really deep mines would be cool to explore, sort of minecraft but not digging through the walls or ground like that, only digging the wall to get ore out of it.

About the diamonds, they could work as reinforcements to normal armor, not being fully out of diamond but simply having the most important parts made of diamond, would make more sence to me.

@ the Terror of Death: We had dwemer in Oblivion, so that'll surely be in Skyrim. I honestly cannot think of anything that would make bethesda take material types from Oblivion away, maybe deadric, but that has been around for ever.

the pick in MW was equipable (when I first started playing morrowind I thought you had to attack the ore clusters to get them, which is more logical than just gathering them as if they were in an openable container.)

I seriously doubt we'll see digging through the earth minecraft style like I mentioned. also it could be solstiem style where you have to have a pick in your inventory but other wise no actual mining action or activity. Who knows, I don't think this will be adressed in the next few interviews since there are alot of bigger questions in some peoples opinions. although I am most excited about the mineing a smithing part.
