New patch cut my framerate in half

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:24 pm

Yeah, what the hell is going on? Before the patch, I was getting 50-60 fps indoors, now I get about 20, and in Goodsprings where I before got 40-50 fps outside I now get 20... I tried basically everything, every advice on this board, every trick I could find by googling, nothing helps. My game is now completely clean, newly downloaded from Steam, no mods, no tweaks, no extra files, no nothing. I'm not using any external programs and starting the game through the Steam launcher like always. Amongst other things, I tried...

- removed all trace of the game from my comp, re-installed and played a new game with no mods or tweaks... Problem remains.
- removing all my mods (only had like 3-4, none of them resource intensive). Problem remains.
- re-validated all game files with steam... Problem remains.
- deleted all .ini files and re-validated... Problem remains.
- updated my graphics card to the very latest drivers (10.10d hotfix)... Problem remains.

From other threads it seems this has happened to a lot of other ATI users (not all, but a lot). BETHESDA, PLEASE FIX THIS!

Yeah, what the hell is going on? Before I was getting 60 fps indoors, now I get about 30, and in Goodsprings where I used to get 30-40 fps outside I get 20... I tried the following:

- removing the d3d9.dll I had. Problem remains.
- removing all my mods (only had like 3-4, none of them resource intensive). Problem remains.
- started the game through both the normal launcher and the 4gb fix launcher I usually use. Problem remains.

Remove this patch, Obsidian/Bethesda. It made my game unplayable :(

30 fps unplayable?, blimey, you got high standards, what's your graphics card and are you using any programs like D3DOverrider?

30 fps INSIDE, did you miss where I wrote that outside my fps is about 20? I'm not using D3DOverrider and even if I did it shouldn't matter since I didn't change anything on my computer. The only thing that changed is the new patch, and suddenly my fps is halved.

30 to 20 is not half but anyway

the good news is i don't need to use the D3D9.dll fix anymore,

3 weeks late but i'll take it, though it seems like they screwed up more then they fixed.

I'm waiting to see if anyone else has the same problem, I got a performance boost after the patch, and so far I've not seen anyone with your problem, it's why I asked if you are using third party software, btw have you tried disabling vsync?

actually it is..
he said he was getting 60 inside and is now getting 30. The other one he was getting near 40 and now gets 20.. so that's close to half.

I'll try this patch in a bit and see if my 5970 only runs sluggish or is as it should be. Npc fix will be the big one and hopefully the looting crash to desk top issue I have is fixed as well.. we'll see.

30FPS inside in not tolerable. you're in tight quarters close combat you've gotta move quick. it is really bad FPS to have inside.

D3DOverrider actually makes the start up sound and works now with the can't-kill-things patch. Problem is, I'm not really sure it was needed. Game never drops from 60 to 30 fps like a normal double buffer does to begin with

30FPS is perfectly acceptable inside, outside, whatever. 20FPS is generally acceptable, too. You can still move just as smoothly/etc with that low of FPS - the screen's just not going to update quite so far as if it's at a ridiculous FPS like 60+.

I have not noticed any decreased performance with this patch at all, however.

Come on dude. I'm sorry your game isn't working, but that post is useless. This is a forum for seeking help from other players. If you would post your system specs maybe we could help you.

So I even tried doing a clean install of the game to fix this. I deleted everything, every trace of New Vegas. Uninstalled, then removed all folders, all mods, all my saves, everything. Re-downloaded from Steam. Tried it again, playing from the beginning with no mods whatsoever and no tweaks or anything like that... framerates are still abysmal. I repeat: Obisidian: what in the name of christ did you do?

Check your iFPSClamp setting.

I did, and it's 0 as like its always been. Like I've stated before, I didn't change anything EXCEPT getting the new patch, and my framerates suddenly halved.

If you'd read my post, I already wrote that I removed all my mods (and I only had a few) and it still runs like crap.

The reason I didn't post any specs is because I had the same exact specs before the patch, and I didn't change anything. My hardware isn't the problem, the patch is the problem. But you're right, I'll post them:

Processor: i3 330m
Graphics card: HD5650m 1gb
RAM: 4GB

and to anyone else in this thread taking a quick look at my specs and preparing to write something like "those specs svck dude"... MY SPECS RAN THE GAME AT 40-60 FPS BEFORE THE PATCH, THEY ARE FINE.

my performance is awful now also post patch. Inside the Ultra Luxe Casino section is stuttering horribly.

before this latest update using the d3d9.dll fix it ran awesome now with or without it it runs awfully stuttery. And it looks like there is no way to fix it now....

Spec:
C2D 3ghz
4 gigs ram
280gtx
win7 64 bit

no mods installed, with and without the dll fix.

and yes I know my pc is old now but I tested the dll fix using fraps and it defintely gave me 20-40 EXTRA frames (depending on scene/outside/inside) ontop of the base rate i would get without the dll.

I guess reinstalling the game from my dvd and keeping steam from updating it would be a work around.....

Standard LCD screen has a refresh rate of 60Hz. Meaning it refreshes 60 times a second, or, 60 frames per second (FPS). When a game is only outputting 30FPS, that means it is displaying the same image for 2 frames, which causes the stutter lag. Likewise, 20FPS means it is showing the same image for 3 frames. So saying you can move just as smoothly at 20FPS as you can at 40+, that is just ignorance.

Tried some more stuff, like deleting My Documents/Fallout NV, AGAIN... didn't work, still 19-20 fps in Goodsprings where before the patch I got ~40... I
d like an answer from Obsidian that they're working on this, just an acknowledgement that they know about it and are trying to fix it... I want to be able to play the game :(

yup, did for me too. Now walking around is laggy, using the cursor in Pipboy is slooooow, graphics have gone jaggy, and shadows are just blocks. Rubbish.

(Yeah, I tried resetting my gfx options, everything. I had NO gfx problems before the patch)

Yeah apparently some people got lucky... I'm extremely pissed because my game was running fine before, and now it's unplayable because of the low fps and stuttering.

Did everyone having problems make sure their video drivers are up to date?

Bethesda was working with both nVidia and AMD to fix performance issues and I know that nVidia released new drivers on the 25th to work better with New Vegas. I'd think AMD probably did the same.

Drivers aren't relevant in this case because I had the same drivers before the patch and they worked fine.
