New Patch 1.2 Released

Post » Thu Oct 30, 2008 10:45 pm

Very pleased with most of the changes. I'm actually playing my game without anticipating when the next glitch or crash happens.

The only issue i have had so far is getting stuck on terrain. It's a major pain, but worse things could happen.

so are us 360 users just left out in the cold here?

I know, it's not like you're getting DLC a year ahead of everyone else.

I have noticed fewer crashes (very rare - and only after long hours of play)
Also, the perk "Friend of the Night" doesn't hurt the coloring as much, really it seems to improve the clarity of the graphics at night.

I wonder what sauce goes with those crows? I just remembered that I was on a prefinals bender and accidentaly on purpose erased everything in my documents folder. Ha!

Well, I still stand behind my position that online connections of any kind screw with stability, and there are already too many online shooters FFS...

I'd honestly love to see everyone who complains of game instability or low performance try running a program like Game Booster or Gboost before running the game.

Get some idea whether background processes are interfering with the game at all.

Can anyone confirm if the .44 SWC bug has been fixed?

Requirements:

Repair 75
HasPerk "Handloader" = 1
AND
GetHasNote "Schematics44MagnumHandLoad" = 1

So, NO, not fixed.

So you have to get 40 (or 50) skill in survival, find the right NPC to talk to and read a single "Lad's Life". Small price to pay for the only .44 ammo you'll ever shoot.

Yeah, but... I dunno. It just bugs me.

You are allowed Rex, or ED-E AND one of the following: Cass, Boone, Arcade, Lily, Raul or Veronica.

This assumes you are aware of the bug and know the right guy to talk to. Someone who gets the perk and doesn't know about the bug is out the ammo. Also, anyone getting the schematic from the NPC will wonder why it doesn't work.

It's a two second fix....why Obsidian didn't fix it is a mystery.

Okay, so I was fairly happy with this patch. It fixes a lot of things that needed fixing (though not nearly all of them), adjusts balance pretty well in most cases. But I have one big exception to that, namely the HUGE nerfing of the Sniper Rifle. Rather than just complain about it, let me explain why in full detail:

My understanding is that the Sniper Rifle was rebalanced in order to make the Hunting Rifle not so blatantly useless by comparison, especially given how (relatively) easy it is to acquire either. Perfectly reasonable, totally understandable, and something I would agree should be addressed. The problem is that by simply nerfing the Sniper Rifle, the only thing that's changed is that now the Sniper Rifle is also (mostly) useless because other, better, scope-capable weapons still exist.

The Trail Carbine is a good example: it has the same damage rating as the Hunting Rifle, higher DPS than the (nerfed) Sniper Rifle, takes a scope, has a lower strength requirement, lower weight, lower AP cost (by more than half), has a perk which improves its damage (Cowboy), and to top it all off the ammo for it is cheaper and more abundant. The only advantage the Sniper Rifle has is that it can be silenced, and the Gobi Campaign variant doesn't have that advantage. And then when you compare the Hunting Rifle to that... yeah, still useless.

Now I will admit that the 62 damage the Sniper Rifle did previously was a LOT. It could have used a bit of adjustment. Unfortunately what was done was (in my opinion) too much. And adjusting the Sniper Rifle's damage doesn't do anything about the Hunting Rifle's continuing uselessness; increasing the damage that weapon did WOULD have fixed the issue.

Finally, I have a final thought of sorts, something a friend of mine pointed out to me while discussing this. In real-world terms, one of these is a $500 bolt-action rifle meant for hunting deer and the like, while the other is a $50,000 piece of military hardware; of COURSE one of them is going to be just plain better than the other.

I don't think it's a bug. Maybe a questionable design choice to balance the Trail Carbine, but it's very clear it's intentional being the one and only ammo schematic in the game. It's even tied to a Fallout 2 NPC of all things.

Remind me why this is a problem?

Bodies naturally rot away but ash piles could cool and solidify, the same with goo piles. They might last thousands of years.

Because the ash piles remain while the NPC associated with it respawns. The ash pile is then linked to the living NPC, allowing you to use it to remotely pickpocket them.

It also tends to screw up a lot of physics things when you kill an NPC that has one of these weird linked ash piles. For example, moving their body by grabbing it is almost impossible.

If that were the case the dialogue option to even discuss the ammo would be contingent on the player having the Hand Loader perk. Hell, to get it that way it already requires you to pass pretty high Speech and Survival checks. This is a bug, pure and simple.

eh? There is nothing wrong with the dialogue options of Jules or when he offers them. Bug implies "unintentional" behavior, or "glitch/exploit" if it's in the player's favor. This just seems intentional by design, or it could be just sloppy game design in the first place. It would seem this is only something that Mr. Sawyer can clear up with a simple "C/D".
