i have gone to the character toolbar thing at the top created new character filled in all the boxes but i don't know how to create or give specail abilities or powers
any help would most appreiciated

on a related note i have been confused about the sprite my new character manifests itself as (what it looks like) if anyone could help pls

(I'm going to assume you are creating a new Race, because that's the only thing that makes sense from what you said.)
First you have to create the Power or Special Ability.
You do this the same way you create new spells, under the Spellmaking tab. Except you select it as a Power or Ability, instead of Spell.

Then you just drag and drop your new Power into the "Specials" window where you created all the stats for your Race.
