New player - need some advice

Hi, after this game was heavily recommended by some people in the TES forums, I decided to see for myself if it is really that good. Normally I am not that much into games with futuristic settings but I like well balanced games that don't make things too easy for the player and New Vegas was described as doing a better job here than TES games so I wanted to give it a try.

Now I have some questions. The first one regarding the main quest. I have seen Benny and he escaped. Now I thought it should be somehow possible to side with the NCR, which I intended to do. However, at this point my quest log tells me to talk to Yes Man about taking over, followed by the order to kill Mr. House. I was also contacted by Caesar to see him. My character is not interested in either of this, so how can I proceed in the main quest?

My next question is about followers. My character is physically weak, so I figured some help wouldn't hurt. I met Veronica first and took her with me and she seemed pretty strong for a fist fighter. A bit too strong actually. She killed enemies in a few hits, where I often needed 10+ shots. After I found a weapon for her it became even more extreme. She killed many things in one hit, stronger enemies in two, death claws in three. On the highest difficulty setting. With melee combat. I wondered why anyone uses guns in this game. She was also pretty tanky against everything not named death claw or cazador, so for quite a few levels I didn't participate much in fights at all because it was pointless. That was around level 10. Meanwhile I am 18 and catched a bit up to her. I found several strong weapons and can kill enemies quickly now too. But I feel like the time where the game would have been challenging is already over. Death claws are still overwhelming in packs, but that's about it. The only other thread are explosives and that will be hamperd too when I get my next perk point. Now I wonder if all followers are that strong or just Veroncia so I can decide for my next character in advance whether to get a follower or not and plan him accordingly. Are power fists the strongest form of melee combat btw? And do I need to develop both armed and unarmed skill to become a strong melee combatant? They benefit from various perks which seem to be spread between both in their requirement.

You can side with NCR. There is a certain NPC in Vegas you'll need to speak with. He'll get the quest ball rolling.

As for Yes Man, you can ignore him if you wish.

Ramp up the difficulty setting and you'll find that things aren't nearly so easy.

Both melee and unarmed can be awesome. For the best perks, you'll want both leveled up. The Power Fist is not the best unarmed weapon in the game, but it ain't bad for your level.

Spoiler
By this point, you should have been approached by an NCR trooper with a request from Ambassador Crocker to meet him at the embassy on the Strip. You need to go there and talk to Crocker to start the NCR path of the main quest. Check your notes in your Pip Boy.

Also, when you first arrived on the Strip, you should have been greeted by Victor, the robot who rescued you at the start of the game, and instructed to meet with Mr. House at the Lucky 38. This meeting starts the Mr. House path of the main quest.

The game gives you the chance to meet every one of the main faction leaders so you can decide who you are going to side with. You can even start their quest lines, but at certain points along those lines, you'll be forced to choose one to help as the other factions besides Yes Man will shut you out. Yes Man's quests will always be available to you.

So if you want to side with the NCR, you need to get over to see Ambassador Crocker as soon as possible.
