New Ranged Weapons?

This flexible platform opens up countless play styles – dual wielding, two-handed weapons, the classic sword and shield combo, ranged weapons, or even equipping two different spells.

Now I may be overreacting, but the way they say ranged weapons sounds like there's more than the bow and arrow this time around. Perhaps crossbows or some thrown weapons? :hubbahubba:

Maybe. Or maybe it just sounds better than "bows". :sadvaultboy:

I also just made a thread on this. I guess one of them will be locked. But yeah, I was thinking the same thing because you can't dual wield bows.

I want me some throwing knives and shortsword combos.....mhmmm.

I thought as well, but then again wording can be taken too literally.

There probably is more than one range weapon.

Well, then two-handed weapons could mean spears...

But it could also mean bat'leth.

The point is, it is not worth it to get excited over vague descriptions. You are just going to be dissapointed.

I think Bethesda are just leaving open the possibility of putting in spears and ranged weapons other than longbows.

It would be nice to have throwing axes, throwing knives, and maybe even spears that can be used as both a stabby and throw-y weapon. Maybe the power attack for spears could be a throw if they are included. That would definitely be nice.

How about bolas, nets, and javelins (or spears as javelin)? Would love to see longbow, shortbow, composite/war bow, and light and heavy crossbows though. Maybe only the shortbow can be used while mounted, and composite/war bow require a certain strenght (perk maybe?). No crossbow can be used (reloaded) while mounted. Light crossbow doesn't eat fatigue to reload, but reloads faster (nearly on par with the bow). Heavy crossbow has a significant bonus to armor punctures.

There must be pros and cons to everything. If everything is just an extended stick, give me the stick instead :P

...you can't dual wield bows.

I want so bad for someone, somewhere, to prove this statement wrong...

Well as much as thrown weapons would be nice, can't say I really care if crossbows make it in or not.

His use of the words 'ranged weapons' could have just meant the variety of bows + staffs/staves--they'd be thought of as ranged too, wouldn't they?

Well, technically you COULD dual wield bows, but unless you have an extra pair of arms, I think you're going to have a hard time shooting them.

But I'd agree that one probably shouldn't get too exited over vague hints like this. It is true that the fact that they said "ranged weapons" and not "bows" might indicate the presence of ranged weapons other than bows, but it proves nothing. It would certainly be nice to see crossbows, though they're not as important to me as spears, but I wouldn't consider the use of the term "ranged weapons" as sufficient evidence that they're in the game. Now, I'm not trying to be pessimistic here, I'm not saying crossbows, or other ranged weapons beyond standard bows, for that matter, won't be in the game, maybe they will, I don't know, I'm just saying we shouldn't assume they're in without any concrete evidence.

That depends on whether they work like in Oblivion (Shooting spells when you use them.) or like Morrowind (Just another form of blunt weapon.) We don't know how they work yet, as far as I know.
