New Reno. Trouble getting missions from head of families

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 10:04 am

Here is my problem, I have a CHR 1 with no speech skill character.
When I come to New Reno, no head of family wants to see me, or give me a job. What do I have to do first to get a job from them?

The thing with the New Reno families is that there's always a middle man before you can talk to the bosses and get quests.

Mordino family:
Go to the Desperado, talk to the leather jacketed guy with a knife in hand in front of the bar counter. Ask about the family and he tells you to see Jesus Mordino upstairs who gives you his first quest.

Wright family:
In Wright territory there's trainstation in upper section of the area. Find a guy with blue jeans and a leather jacket and offer to help him find his brother's murderer and you get the first Wright quest on the way.

Salvatore family:
Go to upstairs of the Salvatore bar, talk to Mason he will give you hard time but eventually you get to see Salvatore himself. Though I'm not sure did this have something to do with your reputation and stats.

Bishop family:
Probably hardest one to figure out. You have to go inside Vault City walls, there's a bald guy wearing a green shirt. Talk to him and agree with everything he has to say about Vault City and NCR. After that he asks you to deliver a package to John Bishop. Do it and after that you can ask if Bishop has more work for you.

Playing with 1CHR is a bad idea in Fo2. There are tests at both the higher and middle men, and you aren't going to pass some of those tests.

Frankly speaking I HATE persuasion skills in ALL RPG. It always limited my character development.
Besides I like having a 10 agiilty and 10 luck without gifted trait.

It's good thing that I can circumvent this idiotic skill in FNV with party time mentats + metants + naughty sleepwear + speech magazine (+20). LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.

Speaking of which, I heard Fallout tactics is combat focused. I might find it very enjoyable.

But in this case its not idiotic. With a CHR of 1 your character has the looks and charisma of Jabba the Hutt - the game is actively punishing your choice.

You might like having your 2 10's, and thats great, but the game starts to shut doors by design when attributes go below 3 or so. The Only attributes I'd ever consider dropping to 1 are perception (on the understanding I'm never going to pick up a gun, and even then some options will be shut) and Luck (which is dangerous) - Even Inteligence at 1 is really only good for a laugh.

If Persuasion stuff annoys you, you're best with a charisma of 4-6 and then not spending points on speech, at least then you're not going to get doors slammed in your face.

The only game that I like how persuasion is implemented is Mass Effect 2. The skill "auto-finances" itself by using it during speech. No need to invest points in it.

As for Fallout 2, I admit I do not like how they made additional charisma ability checks. How many are them? Can you give me some examples?

In New Vegas I can dump this stat, and have a speech skill of 100 no problem.
Personally, I just don't feel that reward that you guys feel when you get to convince someone using speech skill. You don't get the feeling that you are getting more powerful like in the case of guns.

Besides, my BOZAR does the diplomacy for me.

Each to his own. I love convincing and decieving people whenever I can, but if it's necessary, I have to use violence. Speech is my favorite skill.

JoinIng the families, and becoming a porm star, meeting Myron if you're a girl are just 3 in reno I can think of. Your companion limit is half your charisma.

It varies - for some families like the Mordino's you have to have enough strength (pop a few buffouts), some react to speech or your deeds. I completed all family quests with 2 charisma therefor charisma has very little influence - speech & intelligence is far more important. Charisma affects followers more than the ability to influence npc's. There are only a few npc's like Bishop's wife who react to high charisma to give you a secret item, not the bosses however. Downside of low charisma is that you'll have to invest more experience points in barter & speech skills and have less followers of course.

Tip: Always be polite! End your sentences with please and thank you Don ...

I am trying my best not to just go on murdering rampage and kill all the 4 families for their lack of respect and arrogance. What do I loose actually? A few experience? I can gain that all with a centaurs random encounter.

When all else fails use the wiki. It helped me alot with Fallout1.

I swear by Per's walkthroughs:

http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html

Restoration Project:

But wiki ain't bad either.

Doesn't Jules tell you all about the families and who to talk to when you talk to him?

For a price.

I am trying my best not to just go on murdering rampage and kill all the 4 families for their lack of respect and arrogance. What do I loose actually? A few experience? I can gain that all with a centaurs random encounter.

Rampaging is also an option. Experience points is not an issue indeed you can get that anytime, although most quests provide a nice experience boost. From the top of my head what you will miss is reputation, goes for good & evil because there are good families and bad. Some rewards like discounts (See reputation: Made Man) in shops, brothels, free beer/drugs, weapons (early legal access to some laser weapons without stealing or killing for it), a few rare items maybe and caps of course. Getting your car pimped (although you can achieve this without family interaction but it definitely can come in handy). Furthermore some of the storyline plus semi-important quests intertwined with other towns like NCR, Vault City plus an Enclave encounter. I'm not exactly sure but you might also fail to interact and/or recruit an important npc who works for the Mordino's thus failing the related Jet quest/storyline.

Being made man is not necessary btw I completed the game lots of times without this reputation by finishing the family quests to a certain extend - it only matters, like in Fallout New Vegas, for the ending sequence which faction you have chosen or what not.

Also, I say: "semi-important quests" because even without completing all of this you'll still be able to finish Fallout. There are no quests that will stop you from ending the game or something like that. So rampaging is a very viable option. Heck, why not? Go for it - Kill'm all! :flamethrower: :bolt:

However you can liquidate most bosses in an intelligent, fun and more sneaky way - Without blowing the whole town up. It doesn't involve explosives (Well, only for one boss an explosive trap is an option without reverse pickpocketing), firearms or stabbing weapons. Examine their medical conditions. :whisper:

In a nutshell: the biggest thing you'll miss out on is perhaps story-wise.
