New Spell Effects

Post » Mon Oct 18, 2010 3:18 am

Nope, just effects on the PC, to liven up the bland magic effects of Oblivion. Although you can make a "trap" spell, which causes any who go through it to take X type damage. A Computer person can have some awesome magic mods, but console players are restricted to this method. Hopefully Skyrims will look better and still allow us such spell customization.

Yup, spell making needs a tremendous overhaul. So does magic too... I hope Bethesda took a look at mods like Midas and Supreme Magicka to improve their magic.

Some more spell affect based around messing with the AI would be nice. Maybe something like ghost sound. I wonder if they are making any changes to temporary buff spells. Something that won't require me to wear a spell remove a spell, wear it again.

So draconic is Thu'um? I'm confused. I thought Thu'um was a magic worked by your voice.

The actual name of the power is called Thu'um. The Greybeards on High Hrothgar also have the power of Thu'um.

In the GI issue, it was said that Bethesda created a new system to swap weapons/magic really quick and easy without having to use the annoying directional pad to access the quickslot. Where you can set up your combinations of spells, weapons or different items in each hand and change them with no difficulty. I think this will also include being able to set full armor combinations.

Hopefully we can delete spells now. I also had another idea on hot-keys. In NV when you hit up it changes your ammo types, you effectively lose a hot-key, but its pretty much the same that was in Oblivion. I was thinking that in Skyrim hitting up would bring up another set of hot-keys, effectively giving you 14 hot-keys instead of 8. You lose a hot-key per "set", but you now have way more hot-keys. Thoughts?

I don't quite get it... But whatever Bethesda is doing about hot-keys and quickslots in Skyrim sounds pretty good. :D

You have your eight hotkeys on your directional pad, but when you hit "up" it changes to another set of seven hot-keys, it wont just bring up whatever is under the "up" hotkey slot. So you have seven hot-keys, then when you hit "up" it brings up another seven, hit "up" again and you go back to your original seven hotkeys. Kind of like how ammo is permanently "up" on the directional pad in New Vegas.

I would really like to see some weather control spells

Completely useless but still cool :)

Other than that I'm hoping a lot of other spells make an improved comeback and add something more

Oh, well. It would be a bit confusing on consoles, especially when the quickslots are not displayed on the HUD like in Dragon Age for instance. I will stick with whatever Bethesda is doing.

Quick slots aren't displayed on the Hub when you hold it a certain direction anymore?

It would be nice to cast spells right from the hotkeys. like you can do with potions. There has to be a way to do buff spells better though. I rarely used them in oblivion basically I ignored them till I found a pair of boots/gloves/pants that had the affect I wanted. What If they made the affect more powerful, but required you to have the spell equipped and the button held down to use it. Not working of a timer. It would give more choice for example. if your a melee fighter, you can carry a speed spell in your off hand and activate it when you need it rather then just going down your buff list to make sure you have everything on.

if they bring necromancy into the game i thought it would be cool if say, you just slaughtered a whole small army of warriors and you could cast an area effect reanimate spell and watch your fallen foes all rise up at once an become your minions.

Well, there won't be a necromancy skill that's for sure. But we have conjuration, if they improve the spell making it would be cool to tweak reanimation to become a large AoE spell, and hopefully, we can turn bodies into skeletons/zombies and alike instead of the black eyed dumbasses with purple aura.

Not to me, we just need more slots, which is why I thought up the "hit up to bring another set of hotkeys" idea.

yeah that would be sweet, i was heartbroken when they removed mysticism but, come to think of it it kinda fits more into conjuration anyway, i hope they make an abundance of evil magic, maybe a spell that can poison you or a spell that does physical damage bypassing magical resistances, against powerful sorcerers that you could nt get near with a sword.

yeah wonder how we will quickly change a spell(or weapon) for each hand on the fly. I'm sure bethesda have made a cool system thats smooth.

maybe on pc it can be 1-8 for main-hand and MouseScroll for off-hand?

Yeah, Dragon Shouts needs to be explained a bit more to fit the lore. But I think the Dragonborns learned with Nords the Thu'um and perfected it with Dragonic to become what they are now.

81, counting the repetitive ones like "Drain Health" , "Drain Stamina", "Drain Magicka".

Skyrim will have 85, and hopefully they merged those effects I mentioned up here into one single effect, leaving room for other new ones.

I get what your saying, like in Mass Effect you would hit Right Bumper for the power wheel and it basically was a hot key wheel, and by pressing up on the d pad it would display a wheel of a bunch of hot keys we could quickly and accurately pick, instead of the uncontrollable d pad with only 8 options.

What is even more awesome, is that this Flamethrower effect is part of a single effect called "Fire Damage" :D According to GI, one effect can have multiple different instances. So not only we are getting fireballs and fire touch on the "Fire Damage" effect, but also things like Fire sprays (Flamethrower) and Auras that burn your enemy, etc.

Which means 85 effects can become 400+ different unique spells. And with options to change the power, area and range like in Oblivion, you can get infinite spells.

I made a post about this on the weekend. We have not had spell creation confirmed. We still don't.

I know. I am assuming there will be one, which is a very logical thing to do and very likely to happen.
