A New Sun Rises - Maxical's Journey II

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:35 am

The inspiration to write my Oblivion character's story came from reading The Journals of Buffy the Bowgirl by Acadian; Angel by Bobg; and Arwen by Arwen; (plus I was outright pushed into writing it by Acadian)

My character's name is Maxical, and she is an albino Khajiit.

This thread is the continuation of Maxical's story, and for those who have not read the earlier chapters you can find them below.

Or, if you prefer to read the full story (to date) without wading through the comments and critiques you can find it in its entirety here under the title: http://www.fanfiction.net/~malx

Maxical's entire journey has been captured in the picture albums of her Myspace page, if you would like to visit it: http://www.myspace.com/oblivion_khajiit

I want to thank everyone that has been reading Maxical's Journey, the help you have given me to improve it, I could never thank you all enough for that. For every one of you that has encouraged me or lit a fire under my tail to make me go back and fix things - You ROCK !!!!

For a little background:

As I am writing the story while playing the character in the game, the story has been subject to a glitch that occurred early on in game that caused some hilarious consequences. Rather than restart the game, I stuck by my character and wrote these changes in. The result has turned out to be one of my most interesting games yet, (barring the first game of course).

This character is the youngest I have ever played, so it took some doing to get her into jail, and the changes the game glitch caused took the story through some twists and turns I never would have expected.

This is Maxical's story, I love it and hope you will too.

Look for Chapter 24 to post later today!

It was very odd, this is my 18th game. In all my previous games, Fathis Aren hated my character, and the feeling was mutual. In this game, she ran into him in the Bravil Mages guild. He came over, leaning in toward her, getting in her face and smiling at her, tilting his head to one side. He began talking to her about personal issues, how bored he was, that he would do anything to allieviate his boredom - he said that repeatedly. (I was afraid he was hinting, and that any second he may invite me up to his room by the way he was talking!)

Anyway, when she left the guild, I heard talking and turned her around, he followed her out and was walking with her, still talking! He is not supposed to show up in other places, either, but I would be walking down the roads and he would show up - just like those NPC's that are programmed to stalk you, except he was flirting, not trying to kill her! Everytime he tilted his head at her and got up close to her face I was rolling laughing!

Manheim was also overly friendly, but not as overt as Fathis, and Manheim did not stalk her.

The NPC's that always loved my character in past games - Raminus Polus, Traven, etc. - they hated her! Raminus acted like he may spit whenever she came near him!

Then on two seperate occasions she was being attacked by named NPC's, fight music on, etc. - and both were listed as murders, although they were clearly self defense, I was attacked first - later on in the game this happens again with Mannimarco, his killing was listed as a murder!

Alix Lencolia was very nice to my character as well, he is usually stiff and rude.

The Gray Prince was also effected, he followed her around the Bloodworks and kept talking to her.

Oh, lest I forget: Vicente followed me around the sanctuary staring at me! - scared me to death! He was as creepy as a Fighter's Guild Porter! Lol.

On several occasions my character has mysteriously died with no known reason, death music playing and everything - and then she has just as suddenly stood back up and started going again! Once was near the Old Bridge, I had killed the highwayman and was standing there, when suddenly she just died - the death music played and she fell. Before I could react, she rose again and just stood there. Everytime she comes close to death in this story is where that glitch has happened. It even happened in an Oblivion gate.

It has been a very weird game, but I am really enjoying the differences, it has made for a very exciting game with lots of twists.

D. Foxy has graciously agreed to co-write this chapter, employing his character Damien "Foxy" Reynard to assist Maxical. D.Foxy has written all the parts for Damien Reynard and his agent Sneakers. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have writing it.

Chapter 24: The Mission

I was eager for our lessons to begin and was waiting by Foxy's desk for him to appear. It was not like him to not be here before I arrived. Then suddenly Foxy appeared before me as if by magic! He had been there all the time, observing me!

"How did you do that?" I asked, intrigued. "What magic is this?"

Foxy thrust something I could not see into my hands, I could feel it's weight though.

"This is a special enchanted outfit which will help you slip in and out of places in broad daylight and none will see your movements. The enchantments on the robe, shoes, and jewelry combined will give you 100% chameleon, so you cannot be seen."

"Do you mean like my spell of invisibility?" I asked.

"No. Your spell is only good should you never touch anything, or cast another spell. This armor will give you the ability to pick locks without your invisibility being lost. You will blend into your environment like a chameleon. And now I will tell you about your mission."

Foxy glided up till he stood directly in front of me, and for the thousandth time I marveled that his movements made no sound. I am sure he wanted to be in good view of my facial expressions as he described my mission.

"The mission which you already accepted is to rescue an operative of mine from the Imperial Prison."

I stared, dumfounded. Foxy reached over with both hands, and gently but firmly closed my gaping mouth.

"But, but, you have trained me only in the streets and sewers, I have no training against guards and the security that would be found in a prison! Can I not just pick someone's pocket or break into a home instead?"

Foxy ignored me and continued. "And now, pay attention. Normally I would ask an operative of mine to draw up a mission plan at once, which I would go over the next day. However, in your case I fear I must draw up the plan myself, since to allow you to draw up the plan would be as bad as your standard operating procedure, which is to charge in with no plan at all."

I huffed up a bit, but didn't deny it. Planning has not been my forte as yet.

"And the plan is..." Foxy began.

Foxy gave me his plan in explicit detail. I wished I could write it down, but Foxy was a stickler for nothing in writing that could fall into the wrong hands, and that my memory should be my biggest asset.

Well, whomever said beggars know things first was right. The beggar who told me about the spy in the Emperor's Palace was telling the truth! It was Foxy's operative. It seems Foxy had fallen on some information that the Emperor had been unwell of late. He sent his tentacle in that direction to determine the truth. Foxy is that curious always. He must always be learning and knowing something.

"Have you been listening to me?" Foxy asked, obviously aware that my mind had wandered.

My face infused with redness, I could not let him know I had not listened as he detailed his plan!

"Yes Foxy, I have heard all." I lied.

His eyes looked amused at that, could he have known I was not truthful with him?

"Good, then there will be no need for me to repeat the codename you must remember?" Foxy asked, tilting one eyebrow up. Almost a challenge, or bait to see if I would stand by my lie.

"Yes, that is, no need unless you care to, just to drill it into my brain, so to speak."

"No, as you say, you heard all." Foxy turned away. Were his shoulders shaking?

I had an urge to admit I had lost my train of thought and not heard a word, but did not want to appear inept.

This mission had not the same feel as the two of us going out together picking locks and pockets, I was to act alone, and had no practice at breaking into a prison and releasing prisoners. I was very frightened going into this mission, especially since I did not listen to the plan, nor hear the codename. I would have to bluff it, just remembering all Foxy had taught me.

***

I was mentally checking off everything I would need to bring on the mission as I dressed in the outfit Foxy had provided.

My gear consisted of a loose robe of the lightest material that it would not weigh me down. Foxy said I may forget and stomp around like an ogre if I carried any weight. Inside the robe were large pockets, he did not want me toting my heavy pack along as it may make too much noise. I had a light pair of shoes with gold trim, an amulet, and a ring; each enchanted with chameleon.

It being my first mission I think Foxy was worried I may mess it up, so he wanted me invisible. He also gave me a special sheath that strapped to my thigh to hold a dagger, the only weapon I would be able to carry since a sword may be too noisy.

"Check," I said aloud.

I loaded the special light armor for the agent into the pockets of my robe, "check." Heal Other scrolls (since my restoration was not good enough to heal the agent should a fight break out); "check."

All I lacked now was something to use as a distraction if needed. The mouse had worked well for me in my training, so I popped in to Foxy's lab to get a mouse. There were numerous cages filled with mice in there, and many empty cages as well. The man must have a lot of things he needed distractions from!

Foxy had told me I would have to pass two guards at the gates, one in the lobby, possibly several walking about the grounds. He said if I delayed too long and exited during a shift change that there could be as many as 30 guards at one time that I must pass, so not to delay, but be prepared in the event.

I tried to add up how many guards I would need a mouse for, but my head has never grasped calculations well, so I just emptied out all the cages into my pockets. Better safe than sorry.

***

Using Foxy's training I walked lightly, making no sounds. I loved the chameleon outfit, I did not have to continually cast and wear down my magicka to stay invisible.

"Magicka! Oh no, I forgot to line up my spells!" I groaned.

A citizen passing by me jumped at my groan, looked around wildly, and then ran.

"Oh no, I am not prepared right, I must do what Foxy said and THINK." I whispered, none too quietly.

Ducking into an alcove with a bush I sat down and readied my spells and gathered my wits. "Okay, no talking, be quiet, keep my mouth shut, don't even let my mouth open for any reason?" I was counting on my fingers and reciting what Foxy had lectured me on when I realized I was reciting them aloud.

Standing up I noticed one of the mice had escaped while I sat. I tried to capture it, but it ran away from me, me being a cat I guess. It ran under the feet of a woman who set up a huge scream, flapping her dress up and down and dancing around on the tips of her toes. The two guards posted at the gate into the prison began slapping their thighs and pointing at the woman, laughing uproariously at her.

Well, it was unlikely I would get a distraction better than that! I scurried up the steps to the gate.

Suddenly a sound like Foxy makes when suppressing a laugh, (which I have heard often enough), came to my ears. I spun around and looked, listening, but there was nothing. It must have been my nerves.

I hurried through the gates sliding past the guards who were laughing at the woman, one wiping tears from his eyes and the other nearly seated on the ground. He would be lucky if he left no puddle he was laughing so hard.

On the other side of the gate were two new guards, these were unable to see the woman in her dance of fear and be distracted, I would need to be very cautious.

Crouching down low into a sneak position, I began to creep by them. My knees were bumping the pockets, so almost every step produced a mouse on the ground. Foxy had not told me what to do if this happened. I thought it best to stand so I would not lose all my 'distractions' before finding the agent.

"Why don't you fall down and bleed to death!" I heard shouted behind me, along with the sound of a blade leaving it's sheath! I spun around to find the guards behind me drawing their swords and chasing the mice I had dropped.

I hurried into the rotunda. A guard sat at a desk in the middle of the room eating his lunch. I was afraid to crouch down again, lest I lose more mice. Reaching in my pocket I grabbed one mouse and pulled it into my cuff so it would be covered by the chameleon robe sleeves. I eyed the guard as I made my way to the door that led to the dungeon and ended up stubbing my toe on a place in the floor where the tiles changed to stones. The guard at the desk stood up instantly. I threw the mouse and it landed on his plate of food.

He drew his sword shouting, "For the Empire!" and began chasing the tiny mouse around on his desk top, the mouse darting away each time his sword crashed onto the desk.

Papers and food flew with each pounding of his sword, but the mouse managed to escape to the floor. The guard stumbled over his chair trying to reach the mouse, then whacked his knee against the desk.

I ran down the steps and picked the lock into the dungeons. The door creaked on opening and I froze, but the guard did not seem to notice. I crept into the darkness below.

Now all I had to do was find Foxy's agent. I wish I had not been wool gathering when he gave me that code name, now I would have to inquire in each cell if they were an agent!

"If Foxy was here he would rap me on the head" I whispered.

Even as the words left my lips something light bounced off my head, causing me to let out a shriek! Casting my night eye I looked around, there was nothing. On the ground I found a pebble

"This place is falling down around me! I will be lucky to get out of here with my fur still attached to my skin!" I muttered under my breath.

I caught my breath and tried to calm down.

Tiptoeing along and peering into the cells I finally found one occupied.

"Are you the agent that works for Foxy?" I asked him.

He turned around, trying to see where the voice had come from. It was Claudius Arcadia! I picked the lock and entered his cell.

"Oh Claudius, you cannot see me, but I want you to know I killed Rufio for you, for your daughter. Your prayers were heard.

"Oh thank you Night Mother!" Claudius said.

"No, I'm not the night mother." I said, but an idea had occurred to me. Taking off one item at a time I used my scrolls to duplicate my chameleon outfit. "Put these on!"

Claudius pulled all on but the shoes, which were much too small. "Oh, just jam your foot in there, you can be comfortable when you are safely out of here!" I commanded him.

"Oh, and here, take this mouse. Should anyone hear you sneaking out, throw it at them!" Claudius eyed the rodent with disgust. He had slept with enough of the darn things in this cell as it was. But he took the mouse and began tottering down the corridor.

"Sneak, Claudius!" I hissed.

The next cell contained a man who denied being the agent of Foxy. I peeped into the next cell and got the shock of my life! It was Owyn!

"Owyn!" I cried out, picking the lock. Owyn was looking around for where the voice had come from when I got in. I ran to him and hugged him. "It's me, Maxical! What are you doing in here?"

"I'm hearing, things I am! Owyn said, moving away from me. "And feeling them too."

I pulled off my ring. "Owyn, it's me!"

Owyn saw a watery shape coming towards him, the ghost of the girl he was accused of murdering. His fists came up. "Stand back, I'll send you back where you came from!" he shouted.

"Ssshhh!" I said, none too quietly. He would have the guards on us if he continued! I kicked off my shoes and stripped my robe off, standing in front of him in my bra and panties. "It's me, Maxical!"

Owyn's eyes popped. "They said you were murdered, I am in here for killing you!"

"What? What are you talking about?"

"Don't you ever read the papers? You disappeared after the fight and left your winnings. That guy in the next cell and I were arrested! They said I killed you to get your winnings! That guy in the next cell was some guard who saw you; they say he is my accomplice." Owyn said, then added loudly, "And put some clothes on!"

"Oh dear, oh Owyn, I didn't know, I am so sorry. I've got to get you out of here, just give me a minute." I pulled out my scrolls and copied my outfit twice this time and then started bringing one to the guard in the next cell.

Owyn grabbed my arm, stopping me. "You put your clothes back on first!"

I did, and brought the other set to the guard. Neither could fit in the shoes, and Owyn was refusing to wear the robe.

"I'm not wearing a dress, you can forget it! And where the hell are all these mice coming from?"

"Owyn, I have one other outfit here, but it was meant for the agent. I will make him wear my robes then, you take this guard armor. But Foxy may be mad at me for that, it was not a part of his plan."

"Who is Foxy, what are you talking about?" Owyn demanded in his crankiest voice.

"I'll tell you all when we get out of here!" He could gripe all he wanted to, I saw (once he got over the shock of it all) that he was happy I still lived.

The guard that was arrested with Owyn was struggling with the shoes, his feet overly large. I pulled out my dagger and cut the front and back, tying them onto his feet. It had to be very uncomfortable.

"But we don't have to escape now, you are alive, we can just show you to them!" Owyn said.

"But I can't show myself to anybody till I get this agent out of this prison!" I said. "Owyn, please; let me get you out first and then I will come forward, but first I need to finish my mission!"

"Ok, now you must sneak, not walk. Here, each of you take a mouse." I commanded, drawing two mice out of my pocket.

"What the hell is this for?" Owyn asked, the guard looked like he was asking without saying it aloud.

"If a guard starts to hear you, throw the mouse at him!"

Owyn crouched down.

"Not you Owyn, you are in guard's armor! Act like a guard for heaven sake!" This mission was not going as planned, and the delays may put us leaving here during the exchange of guard! I was beginning to get nervous and edgy, snapping at everyone.

"Well if I am in guard armor acting like a guard, then why carry the mouse? A guard isn't going to walk around with a mouse!"

"Give me that mouse Owyn, and hush before you bring the guards down on us!" I snapped, grabbing the mouse from him.

"Why must you always demand logical answers all the time!" I fumed at him. I was beginning to feel the stress of all these complications arising.

"Now wait here!" I hissed.

"Oh, Foxy is going to kill me." I moaned.

I went down the corridor till I found another occupied cell. "Yoo-hoo," I whispered. "Hey, are you Foxy? I mean do you work for Foxy?"

"Weren't you given a codename?" He asked.

"Smart Aleck! Do you want to get out of here or not?" My nerves were frayed beyond bearing from all these complications arising.

"Yes, that's me! And my code name's Sneaker, which I see you've completely forgotten. Bleeding Hell, Boss must be scraping the bottom of the barrel these days..." He said with a disgruntled look.

Cocky little Bosmer, I thought, tempted to leave the rude little ingrate in his cell.

I picked the lock anyway. At least he donned the duplicate of my outfit without a word, his tiny feet fitting perfectly into the shoes. He readily took the mouse I provided him as well, stroking its neck to calm it and sliding it into his pocket with a well-practiced dexterity.

Oh, thank goodness someone else knows what the mouse is for, I thought; I was sick of explaining that to everyone.

Some Dunmer at the end began calling to us to get him out. "Here kitty, kitty. Come open my cell too."

He would bring the guards down on our heads if he didn't shut up. I threw a mouse at him. It landed on his face, and in it's fright began biting him. That was a bad move, for he immediately set up a scream.

"Get it off me, OW, kitty kitty, come OW get your mouse, OW, kitty kitty, get this mouse OW off me!"

I considered knocking him out, but we had delayed so much already I was sure it would be time for the shift change on the guards if we didn't hurry.

The Bosmer rolled his eyes. "I'll have me a fine tale to tell Boss when I get back."

"If Foxy ever sees fit to rid himself of you, I may volunteer for that mission, gratis!" I rounded on him, glaring.

Stopping in front of Owyn's cell I whispered in to him. "Come on, let's get out of here!"

When Owyn and the guard stepped out into the corridor I said, "Now follow me closely. If you lose me wait for me at the abandoned shack in the Waterfront district of the Imperial City. I will get you to a safe place till I finish my mission and then reveal I am alive to the world so you will not have to ever come back here!"

When we got to the top of the steps it was the changing of the shifts. Guards were everywhere. Not wanting to take the time to count the mice needed I just dumped my entire pockets full of mice, every single one of them.

The chaos was unbelievable, shouting, screaming, swords out everywhere; it is a wonder we weren't sliced to ribbons getting out, but we made it finally. Owyn walked easily past all in that guard armor.

***

Since we had all stayed together I decided it would be best to all go to the abandoned shack anyway. I didn't think it would be smart to march Owyn in that guard armor right through town since we had no more distracting mice.

My plan (cooked up on the spur of the moment), was to bring Owyn and the guard to Manheim and then speak to the Emperor on their behalf. Then I could run back there and release them, giving them the Emperor's pardon. We could all travel back to the Imperial City together, and I could pop in and debrief Foxy on the success of the mission.

The only flaw in the plan was what to do with the agent! Should I shove him in Foxy's door and run or make him hide out in the shack on the waterfront? I finally decided that since I was responsible for him, I could not leave him in the shack. I must turn him over to Foxy first, but Owyn and the guard could stay in the shack while I did that.

Hopefully when I got back from fixing things for Owyn, Foxy would be so relieved that the mission was a success that he wouldn't be too upset over the other prisoners escaping. Plus this would give him time to debrief his agent without me standing there, so technically I would be doing him a favor by not coming in with the agent.

Shoving Owyn and the guard into the abandoned shack was harder than I thought it would be, Owyn does not have a quiet voice, and he is in a guard's armor in the Waterfront district, not a welcome site in that neighborhood.

"Keep your voice down!" I hissed at Owyn as I pushed him in the door of the shack. Why the man must always want logical explanations for every movement I do not understand!

"I will bring some food back from the Tiber Septim and you can eat on the way to the safe place I am bringing you! You must be quiet though! I told you I must bring this agent to his destination before I can show my face to all. Please Owyn, you give me the headache!"

"I give you the headache? I got nicer treatment from the guards in prison!" Owyn snapped.

"Oh Owyn, you know I am just high strung because of all this going on, please disregard my snapping at you. I will treat you much nicer when I have you somewhere safe and have this upcoming debriefing off my mind. I do not believe I have done exactly as I was bid, and I am dreading the dressing down I may get. The more I think on the things I have done wrong in this mission, the more upset I make myself. I promise to return quickly and with food for you. Just keep it down in here, don't bring the watch down on yourselves with your shouting."

It was true, my nerves were frayed thinking of what Foxy may say when he finds out what a fiasco I made of his well planned mission. How did everything become so complicated, one problem right after the next? I could just hear Foxy now, his soft ironic voice intoning the lecturing words: Because you don't think ahead, little Khajiit! I best stop thinking about Foxy now, I am about to go off in an apoplexy as it is!

When the agent and I arrived at the Tiber Septim I insisted on going to my room first and getting my pack, sword, and armor. I stuffed my pack with all the food laying around in the room that I could find; I didn't think Foxy would mind me sharing the food I had already purchased on his tab with a friend.

By the time I dragged the agent to Foxy's suite I had begun to see visions in my mind of Foxy's ire at my botching of the mission. "Oh, is he ever going to be mad at me!" I groaned, but it was too late to change what I had done. I guess I did what I used to do as a child when S'Jirra wished to spank me for something, I ran.

I knocked on Foxy's door, and when it was opened I shoved the agent in and shut the door behind him, not entering with him. Foxy could debrief him first. I then ran like someone may be chasing me back to the Waterfront and grabbed Owyn and the guard.

"Do not either of you tell me you cannot swim!" I commanded, leading them to the edge of the Rumare. Luckily none spoke and we all three made it to the other side.

Firstly, I saw nothing to criticize and plenty to praise.

Your style is superb. So is D.Foxy's. Each of you are very talented in your own rights. The two of you have created a brilliant chapter. Congratulations!

Words that pop to mind: Funny, long, rivetting, funny, mice, tightly woven, did I say funny?

Wonderfully tied to several previous stories and plentifully laced with humor.

Despite some pretty impressive training, Maxical truly is not suited to the sneaksman trade is she?

mALX, this is FABULOUS!

Oh, and not only a big congratulations on your second thread, but mucho appreciation for your kind words to me in your intro post here. :twirl:

Y'know ...

I co-wrote this chapter and the chapter following...(well, technically. MaLX1 did 85% of the writing) ...and I STILL laughed like a loon when she sent me the edit by PM and I still giggled, a second time, when I read this thread.

I think me n' Malx should collaborate more in future...I have several chuckleworthy ideas in mind, and I know she has, too!!

And now, thread readers, read and roll..on the floor!!

D.Foxy, reread the part of your comment I quoted ^ . Like me, you have been reading too much Maxical! At least you didn't say your mouth was gaped open!

Seriously, you and mALX have done a wonderful job here. Brilliant in fact. :goodjob:

Quit trying to give away all the credit, the brilliant plan of the spy in prison being connected to Uriel Septim's nightmares, all the training, (not to mention the idea of mice as distractions), and the writing of all your characters - you contribute a ton! (Plus helped Maxical out a lot)!

** Speaking of which, Foxy and I are collaborating on two other storylines in Maxical's story, you are not going to believe what is coming up on them! D.Foxy is a genius!

Acadian, thank you so much! Your continued support of the story means the world to me!

Congrats on reaching the 2nd thread mALX.
It is brilliant to see that the passion is still going strong. :icecream:
Although I did panic when I noticed that 16 posts have been hit already. :ahhh:

I really enjoyed this post. It was very hilarious. Mice, mice, everywhere!!

One little comment - in the middle section you use dialogue speaking tags when Maxical has a thought.
"Well I couldn't get a better distraction than that," I thought with my mouth pressed shut.
Normally it is -
"Oh my," I said.
or
'Oh my,' I thought.

At least I think it is. :)

No doubt all the guards will be awarded the Mus musculus medal and inducted into the Order of the Rodent Slayers after their harrowing experiences. I predict a need for intervention counciling for PMS (Post Mouse Stress) Disorder.... OK, I'll stop now. It's early and I need to go lie back down to recover from the laughter. Did I mention that this is a wonderful continuation? Consider it mentioned....

Oh dear, I can't go back and edit the old chapters since the thread is locked. I wish I had a better grasp of punctuation, I have been using the single quotation mark for things like (when she calls the mice 'distractions' ) - ARGH!

Thank you for the tip, I can edit this chapter and remember it in the future, but the rest of the chapters are stuck that way.

@ Treydog - Lol, Thank you so much! This chapter has become one of my favorites! The collaboration with D.Foxy is inspiring to me, his mind is brilliant and quick - bounce an idea against him and he will come back with 10 valid scenarios, each a gem!

**** I may do this, and any other editing needed in a day or so, my puppy is very ill, and I want to have full concentration when I edit; but it will be done. Thanks Winter Wolf!

D. Foxy has graciously agreed to co-write this chapter, employing his character Damien "Foxy" Reynard to assist Maxical. D.Foxy has written all the parts for Damien Reynard. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have writing it.

Chapter 25: The Art of Entrapment

Vicente was seething. Sources he sent out recently indicated that the Sea Captain still lived. There had been no communication from Damien Reynard either. As time wore on he began to doubt Damien had even acted on his letter, for if he had, the Sea Captain would have met his fate by now.

Vicente had been starving himself once again, it wasn't hard to do while staying in the sanctuary. There was nobody here that could entice him to feed. His powers had come back full force by now, he was ready for Maxical to return.

This time he would not take his time, but take her as soon as she fell under his spell again. She would not escape him this time, he would make sure of that.

Only one other girl as young as Maxical had entered that sanctuary; Antoinetta Marie, but even though Antoinetta had been so young when she first came to him, her blood had already been tainted by the world long beforehand. She was no virgin, and due to the hard life she led before Vicente met her, she may as well been in her thirties. Vicente had been sorely disappointed at that. He kept her around because her slavish devotion to him fed his ego and gave him a tentacle with which he could reach the outside world, since he could no longer take the chance to travel in it himself.

Maxical was different though. Her blood was pure, virginal, and with the sweetness of youth that left him craving her to the point of obsession. That she was untouched he had no doubt. Vicente found himself daydreaming of that night in the stables when he had first given in to temptation and fed on her, how wonderful she had tasted to him, he had not been able to get that thought out of his mind. He would have to be quick to make her accept the Dark Gift when she came back, lest he falter again. His need for her was too great, and he realized now his own will power was weak when facing the temptation of her.

Afterwards, after she had accepted his gift, he would come to her in the form of the man, whom Vicente knew was Maxical's own weakness, and take her virginity as well. Then he would no longer crave her to the point of losing his powers again. As long as he could show her the man, she would be by his side whenever he chose from then on.

At the limits of his patience Vicente wrote another missive to Damien Reynard. He could wait no more. He sealed the note, calling Antoinetta Marie to deliver it. Vicente watched her leave, but soon afterward began having doubts as to whether he had done the right thing. He tried to remember how he phrased the note to be sure no hint of his impatience had come through.

It was not that he feared Damien, for he was locked safely away in this sanctuary. But the man may take it into his head to send Maxical in a different direction, and Vicente did not think he could stand waiting much more, these daydreams were weakening his willpower, and he must not fail this time.

***

Damien's face reflected his distaste as he glanced at the missive before him.

"Ah, Vicente. I knew you would not give up one so young and fresh that easily, that is why I have prepared for just this occasion." Foxy's voice reflected a bitterness of long standing. "You have obviously... forgotten what I have not."

Walking to a nearby chest, Damien put on a fresh pair of gloves, untouched by any of his scent. Opening the chest, he picked up the disguise Maxical had donned during their time out in the city, and reaching inside withdrew a sheet of parchment which he had placed inside for a week. Delicately, he brought the parchment to his nose, and sniffed. A smile broke out on his face. Even his weak human nose could scent a faint whiff of the Khajiit girl's essence on the parchment. To the hypersensitive vampire Vicente, that scent would be as obvious as a Minotaur Lord's tracks in a wheat field.

"Yes, Vicente, I was ready for you." Damien said as he took out five fresh sheets of parchment and a sample of Maxical's script, carefully saved for this very occasion. For a moment he sat quietly at the desk, staring at the parchments and the quill. It had been a long time since he had forged anything, but the craft was never forgotten: it was only the skill that was slightly rusty.

Laying the sheet with Maxical's scent carefully to one side, Damien began to practice Maxical's writing over and over on the fresh parchments, frequently stopping to compare his work with Maxical's original note. Even for the veteran forger, the secret of the art is patience, thought Damien, remembering his lessons in the craft of long ago. Slowly, patiently, painstakingly, he began the subtle routine of making the muscles of his hand and forearm instinctively fall into the pattern of another living being.

After the first four parchments had been covered over with writing, Damien took the last parchment and without pausing dashed off three copies of the note he would forge to Vicente. He compared the writing to Maxical's original. Slowly, his head moved up and down in a grudging nod.

"An excellent forgery if I do say so myself!" Damien said softly, A smile playing about his lips.

Then without hesitation he wrote a short message on the scented parchment, in perfect imitation of Maxical's rounded lettering.

Vicente,

I cannot perform the deed you have sent me to do, I must have more training. I will be returning to Cheydinhal and will be in the stables. I apologize for my failure.

If you are not upset with me, please come to me in the stables as the man you once were, as you did my last night in Cheydinhal. Do this and I will know you forgive me.

Your little sister, M.

Damien dipped his fingers in the glass of water beside him and shook his hand, sprinkling a few drops onto the parchment, a good imitation of a few shed tears.

It occurred to Damien that there may be some use after all in Alix's excursion to Cheydinhal; he had been informed that Alix was headed there, traveling in the company of the young Nord that ran the Inn next door to the Faregyl.

Damien's sources had also revealed Fathis had made his way to Cheydinhal as well. Alix must also run into Fathis there, and being the man Alix was, it was more than likely they would speak?yes.

With the slightest hint of a smile Damien pulled another parchment from the desk and began another missive, this one to Alix.

This letter is sent by a friend who wishes to warn you of one who plots to bring harm to Maxical. He is a vampire named Vicente, and wishes to turn Maxical into a vampire. She escaped his clutches because he fed on her while she slept, which weakened his powers enough that she was able to get away from him. Since her departure he has been starving himself and has regained his powers. He is now desperate to get her under his spell once again.

I must warn you not to underestimate him. His powers of mental domination are great, as he is more than 300 years old. I have tricked him into leaving his sanctuary and going to the Cheydinhal stables, believing Maxical will be there. Maxical is safe for the time being; I trust you and Fathis Aren, being now forewarned by this letter, are capable of protecting her in this matter.

D.

With one fist thoughtfully under his chin, Damien stared into space. He strongly suspected that Vicente, even if surprised by Alix and Fathis, would still be too strong for them...well, so much the better. For vengeance was best when carried out personally.

"Yes, Vicente. We shall meet again one day, but for the time being here is my answer to your missive." Damien leaned back in his chair, folding his hands across the hilt of his sword.

As he lay back in his chair, lingering over the letters before he would seal them into envelopes, he caught once again the faint scent of Maxical on the first letter.

Maxical, the child. Sweet. Innocent. Virginal. And Vicente liked his virgins, as Damien knew all too well.

A flicker of pain crossed his face as the image of a young girl came unbidden to his mind, the ghost of a memory stirred in him.

"She was as dark as Maxical is fair, but they are both alike. Virgins, and in the way of youth since the beginning of time, both full of confidence and unsure of themselves at the same time. And so naive and trusting. Vicente understood that then, even as he understood Maxical's vulnerability now." Damien whispered softly, the pain of the memory echoing back to him in the stillness of the room.

"No, not again, Vicente" Damien whispered to the empty room. "Never again. Never, ever .... ever again."

"Be watching for me, for I am coming." Damien vowed.

In a blur too fast to be seen clearly, his sword whipped out and slashed into Vicente's letter, shredding it to ribbons.

***

Alix and Manheim nearly tripped over Fathis as they came through the Cheydinhal gate. Fathis was in the process of bribing a beggar to tell all they knew. Alix was stunned by Fathis' appearance. The man was a walking bone. Alix clasped his hand and introduced him to Manheim.

Manheim's face was flushed, but he took Fathis hand and shook it; all the while his face a study of various facial expressions, none of which looked good for Fathis continued health.

"Oh no, I hope Manheim doesn't lose it." Alix groaned. Fathis is naught but a stick as it is, one hit from Manheim and Fathis will be nothing but kindling powders, Alix thought; dreading the task of keeping them apart.

Fathis gave Alix the information that had been given him about a beggar having seen Maxical here, ill and leaving out the west gate. "That beggar I just bribed was not the right one, he denied any knowledge of a white Khajiit."

"Where is everybody?" Manheim asked. The three looked around. Cheydinhal was like a ghost town.

Alix had not told Manheim all he now knew about Maxical, and he would not tell Fathis either, not unless he had to. But he would need their help to get her out of the Dark Brotherhood if it came to them having to storm the place. No telling how many assassins were in that place.

"Hey, would you two excuse me for a minute?" Alix asked, then found that beggar again. The beggar gave him the location of the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.

Alix went alone and inspected. He found the well entrance, but no amount of picking the lock worked, it required a special key. Alix circled the house. There wasn't a guard in sight, so Alix picked the lock on the door. He searched the whole house, then the basemant. At the end of a long tunnel was a glowing red door. Alix tried to pick the lock and an eerie voice emitted from the door itself. Alix ignored the voice and kept trying to pick the lock till he realized it was useless. After that he kept rattling the door till the voice spoke and saying different words, hoping by lucky chance to hit the right password. Nothing was working.

Alix returned to Fathis and Manheim in time to see Manheim's jaw tense. "Fathis must be talking about being in love with Maxical," Alix surmised. "Oh no, not now, I do not need these two getting into it now!" Alix thought.

"Fathis, what do you know about doors that are sealed by magic?" Alix asked, hoping the distraction would calm Manheim down.
"What kind of magic seal?" Fathis asked.

"A voice answers, and one must know a password. Is there a way to break in to one like that? I could not pick it."

Fathis thought a minute. "If the door has a spell on it, possibly. I have not heard of a door sealed that used a password, usually ingredients are used."

"Can you check this one and see if you can use a spell to open it?" Alix asked.

Fathis and Manheim followed Alix down into the basemant. Fathis tried numerous spells against the door, but none would open it.

"What about a door that requires a special key? I could not pick that one either." Alix asked.

Fathis tried spells against the trap door in the well, still no luck. Manheim tried to pry it open. They could not get in.

"What is this place?" Fathis asked

"Oh nothing, I just thought we may find some information about where Maxical was headed in there. You say the man told you she was heading west? Let's go then."

As they neared the gate to exit the city a man approached them and singled out Alix.

"Are you Alix Lencolia?" he said in a servile voice that did not match his muscular appearance.

Alix nodded, and the man handed him a sealed note on rich parchment. The courier turned smartly on his heel and rapidly strode off. Alix watched him go, confused. Who would know he was here?

When Alix broke the seal on the missive his confusion turned to rage, his face contorting, and he began cursing loudly; he felt as if he may explode if he did not release something!

"Fathis and Manheim were staring at each other in surprise when he looked up. Alix was not known to curse."

"A vampire!" It was all Alix could get out. He was too angry for words, so handed the note to Fathis.

Fathis read the note and had the same reaction as Alix. Manheim didn't read well, but understood enough to join the other two in cursing.

"Whoever this 'D' is says he will lure this vampire out to the stables that we may strike him down that he never again has a chance to harm Maxical.

Fathis was lining up fire spells. "What weapons do you two have?" he asked.

"My silver longsword." Alix said.

"Fists." Manheim said.

"That's no good. Here, take my sword and I'll use spells. You need silver or fire against a vampire.

"I'll hide amongst the bales in the stable so my fire spell will be cast away from the straws, we don't want to be charged with setting the stable on fire. You two hide on the outside. When he approaches and realizes it's a trap you will keep him within aim of my fire. Make sure to pick a spot you can readily move about, and watch out for my fire spells. If you see fire coming dodge, because I will not be able to watch out for you. And Manheim, I want you to stay calm, both Alix and I are pros at battle, you are in good hands, so stop shaking.. Alix, show Manheim how to hold that blade, and let's get to our places.

Alix was shocked at how proficient Fathis became suddenly, and for the first time in their acquaintance Alix felt a respect for Fathis. Suddenly he was the famous wizard and court mage. No wonder the Castle Bravil valued the man!

***

Vicente was excited when he opened the missive. He held it under his nose and breathed in it's essence. Yes, that was Maxical's scent. He knew it well. He felt his pulse quicken. She asked for the man to come to her. She would be waiting for him. The anticipation for night to arrive when it would be safe for him to leave the sanctuary was almost too great to bear.

As he approached the stable he was surprised not to feel her blood calling to him. He was almost stepping into the loft area itself when the first fireball hit him. He let out a horrible scream, and instantly the man disappeared and Vicente the vampire stood before them.

Fathis was casting fire and weakness to fire spells so rapidly that they looked a blur of lights, and every few seconds he would raise his hand and conjure a flame Atronach or Daedra then return to pelting the spells at Vicente.

Alix leapt in with his blade, gliding with ease in an arc around Vicente so he could not escape to the rear. Alix took every opportunity to pierce him with his sword, but Vicente moved faster than anything Alix had ever seen.

When Vicente felt the stab of Alix's blade he drew his own and began attacking Alix. Alix parried Vicente's blade with ease, but Vicente had over 300 years of experience and his full strength as a vampire; Alix could not dislodge the blade from his hands and was pierced by Vicente's blade twice.

Fathis emerged from the stable now and was closing in, as Vicente had his back to him. Being careful not to hit Alix, Fathis continued his attack from close range. Alix kept Vicente engaged with his blade.

Each time Fathis' fire hit Vicente he would let out a horrible scream. Fathis' conjured beasts began darting in at Vicente or burning him with fireballs of their own.

Suddenly a shout was heard on the hill. The Knights of the Thorn came tearing down the hill yelling out a battle cry "Huzzah! Huzzah!" Vicente saw several more men heading toward him with blades out. He ran.

As he ran by Manheim, Manheim dropped the sword and punched him with all his might. Vicente staggered and reeled, but caught his wind and darted before the next blow came, then shot with tremendous speed toward the road.

Manheim chased him on foot, Alix and Fathis both grabbed horses that were in the paddock and leapt on, galloping after Vicente but Vicente was faster and darted down into the woods, crashing down toward the cliffs below Cheydinhal.

Rather than press on through the dense woods where Vicente may be waiting in ambush, Alix and Fathis turned back, heading toward the stable that Alix could return the horse he had usurped. They met Manheim running toward them at a dead run.

"Did he get away? I'm sorry Alix, I couldn't use the blade as well as I can use my fists, I told you I needed lessons." Manheim looked humbled and a bit humiliated.

He had never in his life seen anything like the battle he just witnessed. Not even in the Arena. Manheim was in a state of shock. His first shock was when the young handsome man had suddenly turned into that old with man with lines in his face and glowing red eyes. At first he didn't realize the conjured beasts were on their side, and he had been killing them. For the first time in his life Manheim had felt useless in a fight.

Alix pulled his horse up and dismounted, grabbing Manheim's shoulder and giving it a shake. "Come son, it's okay, you would have knocked him out if he hadn't been a vampire; a normal man would not have lived through that fist of yours!"

Fathis pulled his horse up next to the one Alix had usurped and dismounted. "We need to get some cure disease right away." He said firmly.

Neither Alix or Manheim had any, so Fathis pulled his out, and using the multiplying trick he made enough potions for each of them and one to hold on to.

"You didn't see this." Fathis said, looking Manheim in the face.

Alix and Manheim were stunned at the trick, neither had seen anything like that before.

Fathis handed Alix his potion first, winking and saying, "Remember when she was in school and they found Irlav Jarol's bedroom filled with watermelon and he couldn't go to bed till they carried out hundred's of them? This was the trick used." Fathis was careful not to implicate Maxical in his phrasing. "Okay, now stand still." Fathis healed Alix and helped him rally.

Alix was amazed. "Fathis, you would be the man to have near in a great battle, I feel better and could go again!"

Fathis smiled and then treated Manheim. "Maxical can do the fighting either of us did back there, but this she can't do, and I'll worry till she learns it better. Sometimes being able to fight is only half the battle."

Alix's respect for Fathis had developed rapidly during the last few hours. He didn't want to say "I didn't know you had it in you," but it ran through his mind numerous times. Fathis seemed a different person when he was doing what he had trained for. His eyes sparkled with life, excitement.

Alix suddenly realized Fathis had enjoyed the chance to battle! Maybe Maxical was right about Fathis; maybe he had been overwhelmingly bored by his life as a court mage. The man he fought side by side with out there was a Battlemage like none he had ever witnessed. Alix realized it was the same for himself. Teaching blade was boring. Fighting back there, comrades in arms, it had brought an excitement he had not felt in years.

"Feels good to be back at what we were meant for, does it not?" Alix asked, looking at Fathis.

Fathis beamed his response. "Yes, it certainly does."

"The man that came to me said that Maxical had been heading west. Shall we?" Fathis said. He felt more alive than he had in a long time.

mALX and D.Foxy, this is GREAT. Two of my favorite writers! :celebration:

Let me congratulate mALX particularly though, in that the difference here is not so much quality as style. It is not a matter of the pro writing one part and a less experienced writer creating the other. Rather, two fine writers that have, together, seamlessly written a great story. I guess what I'm trying to say (and probably not very well) is that even side by side with Foxy's writing, your own stands up superbly!

Before I go on, let me offer one tiny point for your consideration:

"Fathis and Manheim were gaping when he looked up. Alix was not known to curse." It might just be me, but this seems a 'girly' reaction. I just can't conjure an image of two grown men 'gaping' over another man's cursing - regardless of its rarity. Feel free to ignore or discount my observation of course, but you might choose to consider a less feminine substitute, such as: "Fathis and Manheim were staring at each other in amused surprise when he looked up. Alix was not known to curse."

This is a brilliant story in its complex moving parts, and masterfully presented. Truly a THRILL to read. mALX's wonderful ability to weave a plot has been enhanced here by the gentle touch of our spymaster.

BRILLIANT!!!! :foodndrink:

This is a brilliant story in its complex moving parts, and masterfully presented. Truly a THRILL to read. mALX's wonderful ability to weave a plot has been enhanced here by the gentle touch of our spymaster.

BRILLIANT!!!! :foodndrink:

ROFL !!! I'll fix it when I get back from picking up the puppy from the hospital, lol. Thanks!
