@ Rachel - Thank you, and I know you have been busy, lol.
Chapter 76: The Secrets Of LabyrinthianThe room started spinning as it had when they went to Murkwood. When the spinning stopped Janus was pleasantly surprised to find himself standing on what could arguably be a mesa; high, flat, and covered with stiff greenery. All the surrounding mountains towered over them and jutted up to snowy peaks.
"Where are we?" He asked, admiring the view.
"This is Skyrim."
"The peaks of the mountains must block the sun, for I am not burning, although it is daylight." Janus remarked, surprised.
"The whiteness of the snow and ice all around us light it up so it feels like day. Look over in that direction, see? It is actually nighttime. It is one of the things I particularly love about Skyrim. The days and nights blend, so you never find yourself without enough light should you be traveling through. Come, let's get moving."
A castle-type structure was nestled in the rigid high-grass, and Melisande was hurrying toward it. Before she entered she cast bound armor and weapon onto herself. Janus did the same, and followed her into the structure.
Melisande pulled a compass out and began heading west. The further in they went the darker it became in the hallways.
"Where are all these corridors leading?" Janus whispered, remembering how in Murkwood creatures had attacked them.
"This is a maze, just follow me, and hush." She barely got the words out when a low growl sounded.
Janus jumped in front of her with his sword out, and quickly tackled the two wolves that were approaching.
"How did you see them?" Melisande said, the surprise evident in her voice.
"Vampires can see in the dark. I guess it is because we can only go out in it." He whispered back.
"Well then you lead the way, but turn when I tell you to. We are looking for a room with colored tiles, one of them is blue. That is what we need. It will really help if we don't have to light a torch, because if we do it will draw enemies down on us. Turn right till I tell you to stop."
When he found the blue tile Janus leaned against it trying to be funny. The floor disappeared beneath his feet, dropping him to a lower level of the maze. Before he could scream for Melisande to be careful she had stepped forward in the pitch dark and fell too.
"You pressed the tile? You idiot, don't touch anything. I said to find it, not press it!" She hissed, casting healing onto herself.
Janus didn't have time to heal. He had heard movements ahead of them and jumped up with his sword out. Three huge spiders were descending on them. A fireball whizzed by him and hit the one closest to him, but did not stop it.
"Good idea." He whispered, and began using a shock spell on them. The reaction was better than he had hoped for. The spiders died quickly when faced with the shock. In minutes the other two were dispatched.
"Melisande, are you just using a small fireball like the one you gave me to fight the duenna?" Janus asked, examining the odd spiders. "These?are?some form of metal. They are not flesh."
"That is all I have." She snapped, then asked, "What?" She stooped and expertly checked over the bodies of the spiders. "You are correct, they are made of some metal?I have never seen before."
"If they are metal, then how did they move by themselves?" Janus stood up, confused. He pulled two spells out and handed them to her. "Here, better take these. This one is a much stronger fire, the other is a good shock spell. It worked well on those spiders. If I had used the ones you gave me that day in the chamber, you would be here with the duenna instead of me."
Melisande thanked him in a muted voice.
"Hard to swallow?" Janus laughed. "I am sorry I leaned against the tile. What are we looking for anyway?"
"There are many hidden chambers here. The one we are looking for has not been found yet, not even by Jagar Tharn. It contains an artifact known as Glamorill, which means 'the secret of life'. That is what we need to find."
It took quite a while to find their way back to the square with the blue tile, and the gap was still open in the floor.
"What do we do now?" Janus asked, stopping Melisande from falling into the pit a second time in the pitch darkness.
"You are going to have to do this for me, Janus; or hold a torch so I can see. We have to walk on that tiny bit of stone back over to the blue tile. There is another spring, not the one you pressed. It will take us through instead of down. Can you balance on the thin walkway, or do you want to hold a torch for me?"
"I'll do it, I can handle the fall better, and move faster without you to get back up to here, since I can see in the dark." Janus slid carefully across the tiny ledge, pressing himself against the wall. "Would the spring have been used before, or is this the chamber no one has found?"
"This one would have been used before, why?"
"Because I can smell out what has been touched on this panel." Janus avoided the spot that had his scent. "This might be it." He mumbled.
A click sounded and the panel slid aside.
"You did it! Janus, I take back all the hateful thoughts I've had about you!" She laughed.
"People don't realize how many oils are in their finger tips, that is why I don't like to shake hands often. Each person's oil has its own unique scent."
"You may have just sniffed Jagar Tharn's finger oils, because as far as I know no one has entered here in over fifty years."
"Someone has. There were old scents and some new ones."
"How new?"
"The scent was strong, maybe days at the most. They could still be in there."
"Then we need to be extremely careful. Can you tell anything about them by the scent?"
"Male, Dunmer, five foot eight, gray hair, ancient, in full Daedric armor." Janus said softly.
"Janus, you are lying! You could not know all that from a finger oil on a door!" Melisande laughed.
"No, but I can see him standing there watching us." Janus whispered.
Melisande froze in place.
"Is there something I can do for you?" His voice was deep and quiet, cultured and aged. It echoed eerily around them. The tones were not friendly, nor were they aggressive.
"We mean you no harm, Sir. Forgive us for disturbing you, but we are here seeking a secret that will save a child. We did not know we would cross paths with you in this place, but as chance has brought us together; may we ask your indulgence for a minute of your time? The wisdom a person of your great years must possess is not often found, except in texts. Could you spare us a moment of your valuable time for a conversation? I am sure we would gain greatly from a conversation with one such as yourself, and hope there is something we can give in return that you may find beneficial as well." Janus said in the diplomatic manner that had won him the love of Skingrad so many years ago. My name is Janus Hassildor. I am the Count of Skingrad in Cyrodiil. My companion is Melisande."
His demeanor was that of someone who did not want to be disturbed, but would suffer them a minute of his time. "When you live for thousands of years, you need a hobby. Something you love always sparks your interest. I collect treasures; enchanted items and ancient artifacts. I have quite a few Dwemer pieces. If your conversation would benefit me, that is."
Janus looked at Melisande. "Do you have anything you would not mind parting with?"
"What are you doing Janus?" Melisande hissed.
"He has been here many times. He is seeking the same thing we are. If he has not found it in the many times he has been here, then we never will. He will save us a lot of time because he knows the false passages. If we help him find it, he may share it with us. Something enchanted, Dwemer, or very old."
"Janus, you can't possibly believe he is thousands of years old. He is playing on your gullibility."
"He is thousands of years old. That is Divayth Fyr. All those decades I was isolated I read a lot. I know enough about him to know it is him. He is here seeking Glamorill. Maybe he will know other things about bringing her back to life as well. He must have some secret to have lived this long. I will pay you whatever price you name of any item you give."
Melisande dug through her pack for something she would not need anytime soon. Finally she pulled out a ring and handed it to Janus. "This ring is both rare and enchanted. It is known as Denstagmer's Ring, and will give him protection against fire, cold, and shock. I found it in an urn in the Falas Ancestral Tomb in Vvardenfell."
Janus offered the ring to Divayth Fyr for inspection, repeating what Melisande had said about it. Divayth Fyr nodded, slipping the ring on his finger.
"The child we seek to help has died, and we wish to bring her back to life. We are here seeking the secret of Glamorill to save her. All we wish is for this. The artifact itself means nothing to us. I have powers that may assist you in your search, if you would be willing to allow us to join you. All we would ask in return would be just enough of the secret to save this young girl. I would also pay you handsomely for the knowledge you have already acquired in your search, as it would help us greatly to avoid the false turns of this maze."
"And what do you consider handsome?" Divayth Fyr asked, humor reflecting in eyes who's only indication of their age was the wisdom that could be read within.
"One thousand gold Septims to allow us to join you, but if you have gained any knowledge that could help us bring this child back to life in your four thousand years?I would defer to your idea of what you consider handsome."
"You leave yourself open foolishly young lad." Divayth Fyr sounded like a grandfather admonishing Janus.
"Yes Sir. I know I do. I do not think you would have lived as long as you have by being unfair, nor by deceiving people. Bringing this child back to life means everything - not just to me, but to her parents and her pet as well. She has brought joy to all who have known her, and the world will never be as bright if she is not in it. I will trust your judgment on what you know, and the price you set on that knowledge." Janus was obviously in earnest.
"Then keep your gold, for now. Let us discuss what I know while we walk." Divayth Fyr said, and began walking down through the maze.
