New to the world of Fallout

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:33 am

On my first play through, i was playing on PS3 with my cousin doing an "Evil" file, he rushed the game and i didnt. I found it alot more entertaining to just walk in one direction and see where it took me, random neighborhoods burned and destroyed, mutant camps, raider villages, etc. The best part about this game is the sheer magnitude of the DC wasteland. If i remember correctly it took me nearly 45 minutes to walk from one corner to the opposite on the map. Albeit there were confrontations along the way, but that just goes to show you what you can see if you really want to go sightseeing. Explore weapons, caves, outfits, cities. EXPLORE!!!

Really? I finally have a PC that works with FO3 again and my GOTY is on it's way in a truck right now from Amazon. I don't use VATS much anymore but that's too bad. Is this happening to everyone? I played my old vanilla game all weekend and had great fun with it and can't wait for the DLCs to come. I love PL that makes me so sad. My 360 version is so perfect.

No, that's not true. I've heard it on the PS3, but never on the PC.

I don't like exploring for the simple reason that there's no intelligent reason to risk your life, walking around a wasteland.

well the game was designed as open ended so i suppose that still gives you the ability to play it as linear as possible. However if you explore you're almost guaranteed to discover things you wouldn't normally by playing simply the Main Quests.

OK, more questions : Should i join windows live? - Your choice, it will track a few achivements for you and if there is a patch for the game it will tell you [course you have to install it if you want to stay signed into windows live]

How often should i use vats? Often, it increases your chances of getting a crit hit by 15% and allows you a few tactical options, like attacking body parts or weapons [attacking their grenade is fun >:) ]

is full screen more fun than windowed? Full screen

what is the cheat key? i want to remove it from my keyboard : it is the ~ key, and the only way to remove it from your key board is to litteraly remove it from your keyboard.

How can i remove a keyboard key? In the case of the ~ key? butter knife slipped under the key and pry it off. Otherwise you can rebind the key commands in your menu after you launch the game. Under options.

Do not use the abomination called GFWL. It will only break and ruin your game.

Endurance goes towards Big Guns, not Smal Guns, and Unarmed, as well as damage resistance.
Agility on the other hands DOES couont towards Small Guns, so it stabilizes there.
I would've put more in Intelligence if I were you. Both Repair and Medicine, two of your tagged skills, are connected to Intelligence.

Oh, ya, I know about the PS3 issues in PL. And my 360 version is a dream. The only time it has ever had freezing issues is when I downloaded MZ. The problem was so frequent and occured throughout the game. I had to uninstall it. Problem solved.

Not much of a loss there.

I think so, yeah. Charisma is only necessary for Barter and Speech (and some minor things like NPC disposition), and you don't NEED either of them. You can get lots of money either way, and the SPeech checks are usually there to make things easier for you or give you extra rewards.

I don't see why you want so high Intelligence when you don't tag any of the skills involved.

Then again, I'm thinking of the way the level system worked in FO1 and 2. So i see why you did it.

One reason and one reason only.

Skill points.

Right out the vault I head to rivit city for the Int bobble head and at level 4 and 5 I take the perk for 3 extra skill points per level and the one that gives me an extra skill point from reading books.

By level 30, Im maxed out on ALL of my skills.

I recommend you get mods ASAP. Unless you have a huge amount of patience, the vanilla game really isn't worth it when it can be so dramatically improved by just a few good mods.

Mods can be good but you have to be carefull with some of the ones that add weapons.

Some of them may look to be reasonable on the DMG but have ungodly crit chance multipliers with crit damage to drop a behemoth with one round, much less a burst.

I don't have a problem with Games for Windows Live. It didn't ruin my game at all - in fact, I was more annoyed that I didn't bother with it on my first playthrough and missed out on all my achievement points.

I definitely think you should play it at least mostly vanilla the first time. If you don't know what the game should be like, you won't know what you think needs improving. Sometimes you'll find you prefer the game the way it was shipped - or notice a bug in a mod that you only recognise because you know how it's supposed to look. (Reminds me: I need to work out why a wall is missing in one cell - must be something from a mod. It's definitely not supposed to do that!)

House mods are normally pretty OK, and very small tweaks - but just avoid major overhauls until you've played the game through thoroughly.

Also, if you're going to play with mods, don't get too attached to savegames. The game is inherently designed to be played over and over anyway, from different angles - so always be prepared to start a new game when you need to - especially with the wider use of .esm files in mods these days (they're pretty hard to uninstall).

More normally with the game, the first time you play it it's best to just take the hint: go to Megaton first, talk to Moriarty then Moira, and accept the local quests so that you are gently introduced into the world. It's a game with a definite ending (without the Broken Steel DLC), so you'll need to do all your sidequests and exploration before you get too far into the main quest. It should be fairly obvious when you're getting near the end - there are a few clues that you should finish off what you're doing if you want to before proceeding to the finale.

Just got past the Power of Atom and have a question about my Megaton House

Are the containers safe to store stuff in? I've noticed the mailboxes in springvale reset, i don't want that happening to the stuff in my fridge. I hate lots of goods to put in it :)

I actually agree with stomper on a lot here.

Play it vanilla first, not only because that's what the game is supposed to be, according to Bethesda, but that will leave you with YOUR impression. Just because (a lot of) other people think it's not as good as it should/could be, doesn't mean you wont like it. Then, if necessary, add a few mods here and there, try them out, see what catches your fancy the most.

Faylin: Yeah, it's safe.
