So, I'm New to This Whole Thing...

Hello people,

Up until now I've only been hearing hype and on occasion reading a bit about TES, and found out about it via the hype from Skyrim. I've been looking into this series and it looks like something I will enjoy, but what I'm not sure is...which game should I start with? Should I start with the classics? Morrowind or Oblivion? Should I just wait for Skyrim? If it helps, ask me if I like such and such a game and if I've played it. Skyrim looks really awesome, and as I know they won't be offering any demos, I need to get a feel for the series and spend $20 on Steam for one of the older ones before I jump on the bandwagon so late with a bigger $$$.

Thanks!

Morrowind is the best game in my opinion, but it is not as inviting as Oblivion. If you are independant and resourceful then Morrowind might be your game. If you want a little more hand holding and direction go for Oblivion. Oblivions gameplay is smoother and fighting is a little better.

Also, the main flaw I see in Oblivion is the level scaling. Which means non-player characters level up when the player character gains a level. This is highly counter-productive. I would spend hours training my PC and raising my attributes in Morrowind to see my PC dominating the world around him. In Oblivion after using the same strategy I found I wasn't nearly as powerful as I should be. Wasted my time.

I cannot speak of the earlier games(Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard) as I have never played them. But I started with Morrowind and I love TES.

I really like Morrowind, but Oblivion is better suited for an introductory game. It could be your first RPG ever and you'll still be okay in Oblivion. Morrowind on the other hand, gives you a quick tutorial with the basics and off you go in the big cruel world, alone and soon to be murdered horribly. Not the most welcoming experience. :P

After that, if you like the concepts behind TES, you can always start going backward in the series and play Morrowind, then Daggerfall. They all bring something different to the table, so it's pretty interesting to play each of them, if you don't mind the graphics. (Never played Arena, so I didn't comment on it.)

If you're new to the rpg genre, go for Oblivion otherwise go for Morrowind. Oblivion will be a bt more like Skyrim, so you might want to go for that anyway. Or you could just get both. :tes:

I'd recommend renting Oblivion to see how Skyrim is going to feel, but still rent Morrowind. If you like either game then buy it, because you're not going to have enough time to even scratch the surface of either games by renting.

I'm not a huge game renter...in fact I don't believe that I've ever really rented a game. I'm just trying to figure out which one I should put my money towards. Heck, from what I'm reading I might like the style of Morrowind better even than Skyrim when it comes out; thought I'm hoping it will be the most awesome one in the series (Which coming from me is saying nothing, as I haven't played any... LOL)

Really depends what your after.

Story? Morrowind.

However, i'm one person who found it to be a horribly dated game, in graphics, gameplay, and most respects. Oblivion is accused of hand-holding and such, and the MQ is't quite as epic as Morrowinds, but you can actually sit down in a chair. If you are sent to steal something you can study the NPCs schedule, they won't just STAND in the middle of the tiny room foever, combat is immeasurably better, and Cyrodiil is uterly beautiful. If you get the PC version you can even download a companion called Vilja. She is like playing with a roleplaying friend, almost, and is amazing. There are mods to fix most gripes with Oblivion; but only to help with the graphics in Morrowind, I found.

Just my opinions. I love both, but Oblivion is definite step forwards, imo.

Sooo...I ended up buying Morrowind. Love it so far. YES, the graphics are outdated and the people look blocky...screw it. This is going to be a sweet game. Quick question, if anyone can answer...how long is a day/night cycle?

2 seconds in real life is a minute in Morrowind, I think. If I did my math right, then 2 minutes in real life equals an hour in-game, and 48 minutes in real life equals 24 hours in-game.
