New Tileset Suggestions

It's not terribly important that they be a perfect match. For the most part, they're ok.

In any case, there's a reason for them not to match: a realistic exterior is going to be smaller than the interior. Reason being, interior tiles have to be much roomier than they would be in real life to prevent collision issues with the player, especially the camera. I initially made smaller tiles that had more realistic dimensions, but the camera was constantly bouncing off the walls in 3rd person, making the gameplay kind of jerky. You'll notice that the doors in the game are all very wide and the steps are about twice as high as they would be in real life. These are all optimizations and corner-cutting to get a good-enough semblance but they're not terribly accurate.

Hi Magician :)

Hope no one minds me throwing my two cents in here.. since I've been screwing around and getting nowhere fast with what I'm doing.. maybe the good magician can help conjure up some of the things I was thinking of..
..and not being able to produce.. :nope:

Any and all tiles sets that add to the scrapyard salvaged range of tilesets for Megaton and etc.. Decompiling the houses in Megaton to their basic wall components.. adapting the current tilesets that have the ceiling and floor lip removed so that they can be stacked, creating larger multi story structures, both for use as interiors, and exteriors.

The shack interior tiles adapted with window frame sized holes punched into them, so that windows could be added to scrap salvaged housing..

as far as the tile mania you're now making. Am I right that if I wanted to create a shipping container hallway interior, al I have to do is replace the textures with shipping container textures?

If so, you've made a happy modder :twirl:

And actually brought the Flying Dutchman a step closer to sailing. :goodjob:

Yes the tiles are intended to be reused. In many cases, that will mean nothing more than switching the textures.

In some cases, the textures may have to be remapped if they do not follow the standard 1024x1024 single surface format. For example, some of the stock interior textures are 1024x1024 but divided into sections with different types of surfaces. Stock meshes map polys to different parts of the texture, but my generic tileset wouldn't tile this kind of image properly without being remapped since each surface maps to the texture in a standard way. It's still doable, it just requires some knowledge of UV mapping and a bit of extra work.

The point of the 'tile mania' set is to provide the modder with all of the meshes they need so that all they have to worry about are the textures, and to make the amount of work applying the textures as minimal as possible. I'm also trying to make the set tile seamlessly, which requires a great duplication of work and many additional tiles. Of course, it's up to the modder to decide if they want to retexture the entire set or only the pieces they need.

As far as adapting specific stock tiles goes, that's probably not something I'll get around to, though you never know. Meo is the one to bug for an extended Megaton set. His work is stunning. Of course, you could always use stock textures with the generic tiles I'm producing to get a good semblance of a Megaton shack.

Do you intend to do something with the tiles later, or is this just a modding exercise? If it's the latter think about what kind of mod you'd like to see, and make tiles for that. :)

Maybe a tent city for tribals? Same basic geometry as the domes, but a pretty different feel. :)
Think circus tents gone wild. Would need matching exteriors though.

If you make a few transition pieces from whatever you're doing to vanilla tiles it will make it that much more useable. That is if it's even necessary, with a fairly standard indoors set there only needs to be a doorway for it to work.

I intend to do many things with these tiles. I'm making this set as a basis for other sets that I need for various projects. I am interested in what other people would like to see, however.

I do plan on making transitional pieces for the vanilla tilesets.

I have 21 tiles now, and have corrected various errors (mostly UV mapping) with some of my early pieces. Also realized that I still need to do vertex painting on the tiles, but that shouldn't take too long. Didn't have any time to work on it yesterday, but I'm hoping to get at least a couple more pieces done today.
