New Todd Howard Interview with IGN

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:28 pm

On the front of dx11.

Todd Howard has a tendancy to say one thing in an understated way, and then surprise us with something better. He is hugely active in the development, even considering his role. I would sincerely hope that he includes a super-mild tessellation system that does NOT radically change the way skyrim looks. Just slightly enhances it (like dragon age 2), then he will allow for a SIGNIFICANTLY wider range of modders ( i would say it would go from 1-2 retired modders, to about 100ish) to actually make it a significantly greater thing at a later point in time, making all those console users feel justified for long enough to make it unsung.

Bottom Line, I just really want tessellation, and if it means I purchase a 500 dollar card, although I am poor as dirt, then so be it. But the technology for tessellation suits skyrim 50 .... no... 100 ... no... 1000 times more than any other game released since the hardware level tech was made available and hardware that supported it.

I would actually argue that skyrim is the game that needs tessellation the most out of any game ever made. The non-tessellated engine actually looks like the textures are tessellation enabled. They look flat on purpose. As if some system is already in place ready to make them bump up.

lol, please don't glorify Todd like he's the brains behind everything k? he's the designated voice of Beth atm while everyone else can keep their mouths closed and work on the game, and deliver as best they can.

Is it me or is Bethesda avoiding answering any questions related do spell making?

Looks like it's not in the game after all, idk maybe it is, I'm speculating alot but if that's the case, stealthy character here I go.

The interview was very good. But as you Todd likes to dance around questions.

It's not like he does that because he gets a kick out of it. Prerelease information has a timeline and he has to stick to it.

The news of DX11 being confirmed is enough to have brought me back from the depths and onto this forum once more.

Perhaps Bethesda hasn't fully forgotten about their PC fans after all. :)

He said that Skyrim is DX11 Compatible, but it doesn't necessarily take advantage of all that DX11 has to offer.

Mods can though.

Definitely the best interview so far.

Nif format, yay. There are sound business reasons for not replacing your existing tool chain and retraining everyone involved, but the news is a positive boon for the existing mod base.

Carriages. Morrowind style paid for travel services make a token return. The thing is, this is all we who like the idea ever asked for. Best bit of news I've so far heard of the game.

Level scaling. Nothing new, Fo3 was an improvement over the Ob system but still not ideal (Where have all the bloat flies gone? Still no real threat apart from random spawn trash mobs etc). We'll see how it plays out.

Health, strength, mana. For a game hailed as a RPG we've still heard absolutely no details regarding RPG basics such as choice and consequences, game support for differing character builds.

DX11 support. I'd not get too excited about this news, it may mean nothing more than 'yes, the game will run on DX11 systems'.

More armor and weapons can only be good news, I'm doubtful about any increase in clothing slots.

No new info on conversations. I care little about the actual mechanics, I care greatly that time is spent developing NPCs beyond 'happy, round headed, smiling, orange quest vending machines' ™.

Spell crafting is out.

The levitation DLC could be the best DLC ever released, $300 here and waiting.

Quite a few good points then even if some of the news was not necessarily warming. Still sounds like way too much focus on combat so I remain unlikely to pre-order.

We are getting our own UI. It was confirmed after 10 pages of PC gamers raging at the obviously console biased UI described in the GameInformer article.

Anyone have a link to this? I'd like to see if they mean anything more than the 'supports keyboard and mouse' of the previous two games.

Todd Howard: Not in the way you're asking.

I must say, that after the dissapointment of Dragon Age 2, everything I read, and everything Todd said in this interview makes me more and more sure that this is a game that will live up to everything I want in a game.

Only little concern I have is that he repeatedly says that the visual experience will be the same on PC as on consoles, which to me sounds like the PC version will look similar to the Xbox version... Why not make use of high-end PCs capabilities of showing higher quality graphics??

absolutely. I'm not really into super graphics myself, but this whole "becuase the consoles cant run it, we wont be making it as pretty as it could be for the PC" mentallity svcks, :/

"We still use the nif file format, because it worked fine for what we're doing and our modders know it well"
How awesome is that? Making a design choice while having modders in mind? Somebody tell me again that PC gaming is dead.

Agreed. I'm nearly as excited to play with the Creation Kit as I am to play Skyrim.

It's nice to know they are keeping mod'ers in mind throughout the process. Hopefully this means an even more powerful and easier to use kit than before. Oh, I just can't wait...... :tes:

There's just one thing I'm hoping for the finishing moves. I know thhey won't be triggered after EVERY fight, but please, do NOT make it like Fable 3 did it (AKA major selling point of the game, yet you do it once every... 5 hours of gameplay?)
I want to see them often. Or at least have some specific way to trigger them

Haha nice. Skyrim is my most anticipated game ever. Twilight Princess and Oblivion were my two most anticipated before but Skyrim is on another level.

I think it's great that they design with console players in mind. I'm pretty sure we're not just a fraction of the market share here. In fact, I'd think that (from a console vs pc perspective), we're about half. So it would make sense to always consider the 360 and PS3 players. And thank goodness they do, because if Bethesda was comprised of some of the hardcoe elitists on this board, consoles would never see these fantastic games and that would svck golfballs.

todd refers to a 'Carriage system' not carriages. Carriage is often used to mean just transport, e.g. of a parcel. So yes, it could mean transport in a carriage, or it could mean some other means of (paid for) transportation.

Also, did I correctly pick up that dragons can also use dragon shouts? Isn't there a dragon ''whisper' allowing the PC, and also presumably a dragon, to silently transport them selves up to a foe. Imagine the trouser soiling moment when you suddenly realize that a dragon has suddenly appeared directly behind you. :ahhh:

Question is, what is the April Fool's lie in this interview? I'm sure that most of it is true, but can you spot the lie?

I agree actually, I think it is great they make these games available on consoles. I just wish that doing so didn't impact my PC experience so harshly.
