New Todd Howard Interview with IGN

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:26 pm

Carriages: the best news ever thank you Bethesda for doing this! In your face fast travel, I don't need you any more!

Wonder if it will be Red Dead style where you actually travel in the carriage or if it is just Fast Travel you pay for? I don't have anything against using fast travel so I don't really have a stake in it one way or the other, but it would be cool if it is more than just Fast Travel you pay for.

Love the small humor in this, I want a unicorn dlc, and some unicorn armor!

We've been promised a Unicorn now!! :teehee:

Nice reading, thank you for posting :tops:
The paid (he didn't say paid, I just assumed) transport by carriage is great, now I'm waiting for the boats confirmation.

Based of the fact that he didn't answer neither the unicorn nor the levitation questions straight on, it's a safe bet (of 300 dollars) that both are in  . And the carriage and DX11 info is finally gonna put some blazing topics to rest.

I enjoyed the interview. I love the fact that we can ride carriages as an alternative to fast travel. I would assume its to every city and probably most of the towns. Maybe a few other places but those would be for sure.

The much more substancial relief is that he stated that you can fast-travel ONLY to places you've been to before. Which is just the right way to do it IMO.

tessellation isn't an AUTOMATED PROCESS. tessellating every single object in the game just so a small subset of PC gamers will be able to go OH IT'S PRETTY and then [censored] about casual gameplay and [censored] animations isn't worth the effort.

Who said it was an automated process? I don't know to be honest. Not really why you said that in what sounded like a crazy, generalizing (or uninformed) rant to my reply.
It has absolutely nothing to do with what I said (that it would make an incredible difference, which it would no matter what).

Wow bravo Bethesda BRAVO!!! I am super excited now. One of the most surprisingly good news I could have ever expected is seeing DX11 support! I love how Todd was humble enough to admit they wouldn't utilize all of the new powers DX11 affords them, but they are going to support it nonetheless. Can you imagine the mods that will be possible now for Skyrim on PC?! This is going to be absolutely amazing! :celebration: :celebration: :celebration:

Also carriages as an alternative to fast travel?! I don't know how to say thank you enough for considering this option (except by buying and supporting your decisions  )

Bravo guys, this is some of the best news I have heard :)

This has been covered before, with regards to the player being able to just walk away from a NPC while they are still talking, and either return while they still talk or the NPC will stop talking and walk off.

This means that there is no switch into a conversation mode. Enemies will be able to attack you while you talk, and you will be able to defend yourself also, the game is still playable as normal while you have a conversation at the same time.

so an NPC is going to stand there while someone tries to kill you then just resume the conversation after the fight like everything is ok? No thanks.

Good read.

Now it may be just me but http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/93395/elder-scrolls-v/images/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110330052314715.html looks like http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/93395/elder-scrolls-v/images/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110211094610642.html, only shirtless? And our trailer nord looks like he has both on? Is that even possible, or am I just seeing things?

I really hope there aren't too many dragons. He said while walking three attacked him at once and recognised that that's too much. But he recognised it because obviously that's difficult (by my understanding). For me, the issue is that that would make the dragons mundane and svck all of the excitement out of the encounters. I get that they're not rare, but I don't want to see one flying around or attacking me every 100 steps.

I hope dragons don't become some sort of really powerful cliff racer. Would look kinda cool, but that would wear off when you can't get anywhere without being pestered by one.

Great news.

I suspect the carriage system maybe similar to the stagecoach in Red Dear Revolver or the train in GTA IV, meaning the player can enjoy the ride in real time and possibly see the world around them as they travel. It would be great if this was the case instead of instant fast travel.

I also remember seeing somewhere that they were fans of RDR and had some inspiration from it.

Thats it, I'm sold. This game is gonna be the best.

And I'm looking at this interview with Oblivion(what was advertised vs what we got) in mind.

Unlike some of you, who are focusing on whether or not Mechanics of a previous title are in or out, I'm looking at the game on its own, not how it stands with the rest of the series.

That would be deadly cool, travel in real time and get off whenever you want, being attacked by bandits, etc...
I salute the DX11 support, this is indeed excellent news!

Just had to say it. It's called Red Dead Redemption, lol :P

But yeah, I do hope we can ride in real time and the possibility to press a button and instantly "fast travel" to the destination. Perhaps a chance of bandits to ambush during the ride as well?

Yeah Red Dead Redemption had the same thing. You could travel in a carriage and talk to others who were riding it with you (often times just the driver). It was very immersive and I enjoyed it.

If Skyrim has something similar that would be more icing on the cake, so to speak :)

Agreed, would be pretty cool. Even being able to jump off whenever you want, so you can hitch a ride and then jump off when you are near a ruin or something you want to explore if you don't want to go the whole trip.

Levitation confirmed as DLC for $400!!!!

In all seriousness though, we had some interesting reveals:

- Carriages (awesome)
- DX11 support (awesome)
- More armor sets than Oblivion (awesome)

Didn't you read... (no offense)?
The reason why they aren't fully using DX11 is because they want all platforms to look moderately equal. Tessellation would make such an incredible difference almost everyone would wanna buy it for the PC (as long as they have a PC that can handle it of course).
I guess a lot less console versions would be sold then. Who knows, maybe Bethesda got this deal with Microsoft and Sony (Xbox 360 & PS3) in making the game look equal, in exchange for money?
Or they're just doing it because they like a balance in graphics.

It has more to do with budget for art asset creation I suspect. They will look similar because they are using the same models and such for each version, with the exception of textures saved at a higher resolution for the PC version. It would inflate the art budget to have to create or re-create extra stuff for the PC version.

I think I speak for many on the PC that we are far from disappointed Skyrim won't utilize all of the new tech that DX11 affords the game, but rather are content that it at least supports the technology. That way modders will have more 'desk room' to create, and in the future perhaps there will be some graphics DLC for Skyrim? I have never heard of a game that did that, released better quality graphics later for a reasonable price but maybe it would work. I know I'd pay for it :)

Just some thoughts

Doesn't a carriage seem a little out of place though? I'd expect something more like a simple horse drawn cart or something. Just hop in with the sacks of flour and bales of hay and off we go. Meh, maybe I'm over thinking it. Probably won't use it much anyway.

because you're like THEY'RE NOT USING IT BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE CONSOLES SELL LESS COPIES which is [censored].

yeah it would make a difference and yeah the game would totally benefit from it, but the effort required to make that difference http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey simply isn't worth the trouble, especially when you consider that the game's been in development for five years and there are a [censored]load of meshes that they'd have to tessellate. it has nothing to do with CONSOLES - it has to do with DX11 being the minority, DX11 being around for a little over a year, and the game being set to be released on all three platforms within seven months.
