New Todd Howard Interview with IGN

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:49 pm

I go away for a few hours and this turns up. Fantastic interview!

Pretty much everything Todd confirmed or implied is fantastic news. And I guess the "carriage system" finally puts to rest the fast travel debates...

I think I speak for many on the PC that we are far from disappointed Skyrim won't utilize all of the new tech that DX11 affords the game, but rather are content that it at least supports the technology.

I agree, the support was essential, the modders can use it to keep the game great looking for a long time

because you're like THEY'RE NOT USING IT BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE CONSOLES SELL LESS COPIES which is [censored].

yeah it would make a difference and yeah the game would totally benefit from it, but the effort required to make that difference http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey simply isn't worth the trouble, especially when you consider that the game's been in development for five years and there are a [censored]load of meshes that they'd have to tessellate. it has nothing to do with CONSOLES - it has to do with DX11 being the minority, DX11 being around for a little over a year, and the game being set to be released on all three platforms within seven months.

Actually it has to do with Bethesda wanting an equal balance in terms of graphics, if you read the article.

Doesn't a carriage seem a little out of place though? I'd expect something more like a simple horse drawn cart or something. Just hop in with the sacks of flour and bales of hay and off we go. Meh, maybe I'm over thinking it. Probably won't use it much anyway.

Civilization in TES in the time of Skyrim is older than the actual modern world. I'd certainly hope they'd have carriages. Other stuff can be explained away by the use of magic negating the need for more advanced technology, but in my opinion it shouldn't be used as an excuse to keep them absurdly primitive.

Didn't someone say that we wouldn't get new info about Skyrim for 30 days, Hm must've been an early April Fools joke.

I think I speak for many on the PC that we are far from disappointed Skyrim won't utilize all of the new tech that DX11 affords the game, but rather are content that it at least supports the technology. That way modders will have more 'desk room' to create, and in the future perhaps there will be some graphics DLC for Skyrim? I have never heard of a game that did that, released better quality graphics later for a reasonable price but maybe it would work. I know I'd pay for it :)

Just some thoughts

I think the term I'd use, for myself, is bitter-sweet. But I guess like with the other Bethesda games, I'll be waiting for those texture packs to make the game what I should have been out of the box.

That'd be my guess too. Bridled mammoths, laden with goods and passengers, plodding through the snow...

Of course, by "carriage," Todd might simply have meant "payed-for in-world travel system," so there could be multiple types of transport.

Yeah maybe I was taking it a bit too literally. The mammoth idea sounds cool.

Since Bethesda is shooting real photographs with cameras that they turn to textures,I think that in Skyrim they will include good enough textures from the beggining.
Crysis uses 1024x1024 textures, while Oblivion used 512x512 textures.
Every single digital camera can shoot well above 2048x2048 pictures, and since there are machines capable of using 1024x1024 textures,I can't see a reason not to include textures of that quality.
There isn't a reason not to include Crysis-grade textures in Skyrim.
They already have them at bigger resolutions and they make them smaller in purpose.
Giving us higher resolution textures won't be hard or expensive for them.

I think there is a possibility that we will get 1024x1024 textures! :D
I also hope for it.

quote article: IGN:I know you probably get this question a lot but we have to ask, is there any plan to include multiplayer features or co-operative play in Skyrim, or will The Elder Scrolls continue to be a single-player only franchise?

Todd Howard: The two most requested features we get are dragons and multiplayer. We got one of them this time! We always look into multiplayer, put lots of ideas on the whiteboard, and it always loses. It's not that we don't like it. I can think of ways it would be a lot of fun, but at the end of the day, that dev time is going to take away from doing the best single player game we can, and that's where our hearts are.
endquote

I can't even express how happy I am to read this answer. Fantastic! That's where my heart is also...thank you.

tessellation isn't an AUTOMATED PROCESS. tessellating every single object in the game just so a small subset of PC gamers will be able to go OH IT'S PRETTY and then [censored] about casual gameplay and [censored] animations isn't worth the effort.

My understand of DX11 tessellation, which I admit is not perfect, is that there are two parts. The first part is the engine. The engine must be told how to tessellate objects, or how to divide up the polygons. The second part is the objects. They need an additional texture, or displacement map, to tell the engine how to adjust the new vertices it created. I'm praying that they did the first part. Then, at least, it will be a simple matter of modders doing the second. If they didn't, then actually getting it into the game becomes a whole other beast.

Tessellation itself is not new. 3d modeling programs like Maya have been doing it for years. What makes DX11 tessellation different is that it allows it to be done in real time, on the fly. Whereas displacement mapping/tessellation in Maya significantly increases the render time.

Since Bethesda is shooting real photographs with cameras that they turn to textures,I think that in Skyrim they will include good enough textures from the beggining.

Yeah Red Dead Redemption had the same thing. You could travel in a carriage and talk to others who were riding it with you (often times just the driver). It was very immersive and I enjoyed it.

If Skyrim has something similar that would be more icing on the cake, so to speak :)

I couldn't disagree more. The real time carriage riding in RDR was a huge waste of resourses and development time. It was cool for about the first 5 seconds then you realized it totally defeated the purpose of a paid fast travel service. I might as well just ridden my horse to my destination in real time. It really added very little or no value to the game. I hope Bethesda didn't waste time implimenting something so useless. Hopefully it is just a paid fast travel service similar to Morrowind.

Yay! I hope so. (Because Havok isn't... the best...)

IGN: Can you ride dragons in Skyrim?

Todd Howard: Not in the way you're asking.
Not in the way your asking... I bet you get your arm bitten by a dragon and it flies in the air and you get a great view of Skyrim. Maybe you can see that one tower in Imperial City.
