New Todd interview from German site

He said cooking is menu based. And what he meant was that diversion type crafting is only going to yield everyday stuff but skill based crafting will yield special items.

Ah so thats what it is

Nice! What's the difference between diversion crafting and skill based crafting?

I'm so glad Todd and his team don't listen to the naysayers on this forum and continue to strive to push the systems to there brinks :tes:

I'm happy Bethesda chose to focus on content and immersion rather than pushing graphics.

He said that NPCs can mine, and so can you. But it's not a skill, just another distraction like cooking or woodcutting.

Todd mentioned them briefly about being diversionary activities the player can take part in.

I'm just glad the racism and in-depth culture is being focused heavily this time! Cyrodiil was a little too happy and civil for my tastes.

-Mix of Morrowind and Oblivion style
-Dwemer ruins (obviously)
-Different holds (tribes/groups) of Nords view things differently in the world? (Im guessing politically, since it was mentioned in other articles that there was even an pro-democracy sort of Nordic group)
-some cities have walls
-loading screens confirmed (no surprise)
-hardware of consoles is "not holding us back in any way"
-they made a list of things they wanted to change from Fallout 3, and they have so far gotten all of those done and surpassed them, adding new things in they didnt think about before
-a lot more traps, including spatial puzzles. "weve gone a long way with traps"
-120 dungeons
-100+ POIs (Points of Interest) "mini-encounters that could be like...an altar with some necromancers around it" (so, like Oblivions wayshrines, daedra cult statues, and rune rocks)
-giants have there own camps
-wolves, deer, elk....etc...have their own dens
-more interest in how creatures in the world live in environment--homes, clutter, lifestyles (like giants, draugr, "other creatures we havent mentioned yet") "instead of heres a creature, they walk around and atack you"
-most gods make appearances again (both daedra and their realms of Oblivion, and nine divine)
--"giants are often with mammoths"
-racism of men vs. elves (and others, probably)
-"eyeball that opens and closes" to show how hidden you are/give you warning---to avoid the "instant gotcha!" from Fallout 3 and Oblivion
-restated that you can do all of the NPC activities (logging, mining, cooking, making armor, sawing wood, etc...) as "fun little diversions, they're not even mini-games" You click on them on your guy does it--the animations. Some will open up menus--like to cook, there will be a list of things to make, like raw and cooked versions of meat (confirms rabbit and salmon as foods, so possibly also in the world)
-Alchemy works differently from oblivion in an "interesting way" (they're not talking about it yet)
-Half of the dungeons are small (he said about 15 minutes---you go in and go out, feel like you've accomplished something)
-Some dungeons will be HUGE. 1-2 hour "epic dungeons"'

No. He said something vague about working with leather in reference to crafting.

Yes, I believe he did say that woodcutting is real time, so it's likely to be the same with mining.

So smithing is a skill and crafting and cooking are separate diversions?

Nice! What's the difference between diversion crafting and skill based crafting?

Skill based crafting is enchanting, smithing and alchemy
Diversion crafting is woodworking( chopping, milling), cooking, mining, leather working, farming...pretty much anything else you can do (hoping for fishing and construction)

One fix to The Black Ghost's post:

-hardware of consoles is "not holding us back in any way besides graphics"

Also the limited amount of memory prevents open cities, although it doesn't really bother me personally.

Cooking is menu based because it utilizes the game items, but the actual act of cooking will likely play out an animation.

Woodcutting and Mining I'm not sure about, but I actually bet Mining will be a fairly important part of weapon/armor maintenance, not to mention the actual creation of new items.

As for Console Hardware not "Holding Us Back except for graphics", you could definitely argue that walled-cities is a graphics issue, since it doesn't actually factor into the "Playing" aspect of the game. I'm sure someone will dispute that, but that's how I feel, not to say that it still doesn't svck, no matter how trivial it might actually be.

But it's not as simple as "Consoles are holding us back", I say it a lot, but if PC was the most economically viable platform, it'd get top priority, the PC is it's own worst enemy.

i think its confirmed that the citys arent cells, they probably just have walls

The cities are separate cells. That is exactly what Todd is suggesting in the video. The technology of consoles is too outdated to allow for open cities, as there is not enough memory. Had BGS waited for the next generation, the graphic detail would be higher and there would be open cities. This isn't that big of a deal to me, but it may be for some.

My reaction in my post a page or two back is the same, I thought the forum would be "meh" until E3 but BLAMO! nice and hot info!

EDIT: Nevermind, misread your post
