New Vegas APPCRASH

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 4:56 pm

Hi,

I've downloaded and installed Fallout: New Vegas over Steam.
Now, when I try to start the game it crashes with the following error message:

Here're some hardware details from the dxdiag log:

I really don't know why I got these problems. Skyrim and any other games I've played so far ran without any problems.

Do you have Fallout3 and does it run? Also, does it load the game art at all or crashes instantly when you press "play game"?
Some quick tips that apparently have worked for other people:
- Run the game as administrator
- Run the game in WinXP compatibility mode

Yes, but not for PC. However, Skyrim and Oblivion run without problems.

When it starts, it goes to fullscreen, I see some legal notices of the game and immediately after that it crashes with a blackscreen and the above mentioned error.
Sometimes the "FalloutNVLauncher" crashes too with the same error.

Run the game as administrator

I tried that. Didn't work.

Run the game in WinXP compatibility mode

Also didn't work.

Is there another patch coming for NV?

That sounds like a similar issue I had. Try this for diagnosis: Rename (I'm not sure of the folder order as I'm not at the correct computer) MainMenu.mp3 (or Menu_music.mp3) in FalloutNV\Data\Music\Special to something else, like mainmenu.wav.
If you can get to the menu now, the issue is with your installed codecs, specifically you have some MPEG decoder directshow filter installed which crashes NV. Mine was Nero Directshow Filters which I erroneously (Windows says the Nero 5.5 software won't work in Win7, I'm gonna try anyway!) installed.
If the crash comes with or without the renaming of music, I dunno then.

Thanks for your reply.

In my case, it isn't a codec problem. Still not able to play the game :(

Code de l’exception: c0000005

Same exception error. I've done some research on the internet:
This is an access violation. Most caused by memory management (also conflict with other drivers etc.). Seems like NV is really bad programmed.

So no solution?

I tried a "4Gb" mod patch but it didn't fix the crash.

Did someone tried to contact Obsidian?

Yeah.
They told me to deactive all third party programs. You can do this with "msconfig.exe" by disabling "Load startup items" and all non-Microsoft services under the "Service" tab.

I'm gonna try this within the next hour.

Ok. It hasn't changed anything. Game still crashes with the same annoying error.

:/

They have to do something, it's clearly a programming error!

To be frank, if the problem only persists on a few computers, it's more likely not a programming error but a problem cocktail consisting of driver & hardware configuration, installed software and existing files and definitions. Is there a possibility to run the game on another computer? Because the error nickname47 gets is eerily familiar with mine (though the thing I suggested didn't work) in the case that the game starts but crashes on starting the audio. I don't know, maybe I solved mine easily.

That must be a funny cocktail. Practically those "few" people are totally unable to play this game. And it's impossible to find an answer. Especially if Skyrim, Oblivion etc. caused no problems. Also in my case, I've done everything anyone suggested me. Deactivated all third-party software on my computer, reinstalled graphic drivers etc. None of these things helped. Only thing I could do is left, would be to reinstall my OS. And I will surely not do that if everthing else is working fine.

I hope that Obsidian will release another patch. If there are enough people complaining, they have to do it. I suggest everyone with these problems to contact their support. Until then, I am going to play other games or will try it again on a future PC of mine ;)

Special thanks to everyone who replied on this topic :)

I still think that this could be a codec issue and a OS reinstallation might make the game to work. Have you used _any_ 3rd party codec packs on the computer? FFDshow, Codec lite packs etc. What is your media player of choice, did it install any plugins? You can install GSpot codec identificator software which can list Directshow filters which the computer will try to play files with. As the game starts (shows the legalese screen), the graphics driver works but a crash after that can indicate sound issues. Unfortunately you can't start the game without sound to diagnose it.

Hey guys!

Problem seemed to be fixed since I've created a new user account.
I really don't know why it's working now. Curious problem, anyway I'm happy it got fixed.

Since the last patch I had also the "fallback to desktop" error in Skyrim. I fixed this by enabling the "transparent glass" setting under Aero. Maybe it also helps with Fallout if someone has this problem.

I'm having the same issues. Game gets through the opening intro then locks up on the roulette wheel clock. Frankly, disabling all third party software is no fix at all for anyone who uses their computer for anything other than playing this game (assuming that fix even works). Have played FO3 without any issues and computer more than meets minimum requirments. Will try to reload and work some of the other suggestions noted by others, but I must confess I'm not at all impressed with Steam or this game so far.

I wonder if there is a number big enough to cover the number of times that statement has been written and not been true.

Now I'm getting this error. At first I played with no problems for days. Then I quit the game, few minutes later start again and find that I can't load any of my saves (I could load them just a few minutes ago). Tried to start new game - crash. Disabled all my mods and DLC's - can't even reach the main menu anymore. Re-installed the game - still no go, still the same c0000005 error.

Just in a few minutes game went from playable to unplayable, there were no changes to the game or the system done in those few minutes that I'd know about (steam was in offline mode too), so wtf is going on?

Something *has* to have changed, somehow. The only thing I can think of is a virus-type situation having corrupted something critical, or some hardware has gone over the edge into non-functionality.

Mkay, apparently something went wrong in one of the xml's in data/menus. Probably archive invalidation was still on after game re-installation so it continued to mess it up

Yeah. It's also been archive invalidation in my case. Now, after the deletion of all proper files it works fine.
