New vegas doesnt load save data and crashes frequently

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:22 am

I purcased my Fallout new vegas game and got it about friday, did not play it until yesterday (sunday) and i was enjoying the game just fine until about 15 to 30 minutes when i got a blue screen of death. i restarted my computer went back and had the same thing happen twice before i decided it probally wasnt good and decided to llook up help on the topic. i found that updating my graphic driver should fix the problem and it did however now when i got to play, my "saved game" shows up with all my info and shows im in the dark (which is where i left) and in the right place one the preview, but when i got to play it is day, im in the middle of the town where i started, all my data (weapons, items, quests, maps) everything is gone and my levels are gone, everything is equal and restored to what appears to be generic default data but im not starting out im in the middle of goodsprings. i was thinking this would be fine and i'll just start over however, A. the game automatically crashes within about 5 minutes. B. anytime i open a door it crashes and C. i have no weapons so that would make the game nearly imposible considering i cant go inside anywhere. so pretty much my data does not load properly and anytime i do anything signifigant the game exits completely. PLEASE please please help me, i ran the "verify integrety of game" option in steam and it says one item is missing, will replace next time or something and i have no idea what that means.
here is my Dxdiag:

Your running close to minimum specs, or possibly lower. I'd inspect your video card. I didn't see the Quadro on the supported cards, and it's only 64Mb. Your also running the lowest form of DirectX9 that the game will accept.

It's not a Geforce, although it's usually related to one or another of them, but with differing BIOS data and very different drivers, since it is intended for creating 3D graohics, not for viewing 3D animations. If I missed the small amount of VRAM attached to it (I don't do well at all trying to get more than just a little out of a DxDiag report), that is really a problem trying to handle the textures in the game, for which the minimum is 256, and borrowed memory from the system pool doesn't count.

There would be no official support, that is certain, and I really doubt that the slow CPU (all P4s are slow, compared to anything newer) will be able to keep up, anyway.

Guys,
What about the part where he has only 1GB memory?
2GB is considered minimum, to even try to play new games (and the 64-bit guys will laugh at only 2GB even still).
But easy enough to buy another gig - and will really help your computer!
It's probably DDR memory, PC3200 @ 400MHz (DDR).
Still available (but more $$ than newer types of memory).
2GB is okay, it's the practical maximum for WinXP 32-bit plus a 1GB vidcard.
In other words, it's a good investment to have 2GB memory in your rig - it's still a good computer.
Vidcard?
Well (since you're going to the computer store anyway) if your budget is $200 bucks I recommend GTX-460 1GB.
If you wish to spend less, we can maybe recommend something less...? Guys?
Maybe you have AGP motherboard. In that case we would go for the memory, and try to make the existing Quadro work better...
You will see new PCs selling for $500 bucks and ask yourself, 'how can I spend $300 bucks on this old one?'
The answer is, those $500 rigs are junk and have onboard video (ie. no vidcard).
They're not gaming rigs...
Good luck,
Regards

I repeat this over and over, so this will be the old broken record. When the performance of a PC system is as bad as the one described here, the influence of upgrades follows the total system sequence of GPU first, CPU second, RAM third, and everything else (other than a decent power supply) much further down in the ranks.

A Pentium P4, even a P4D dual core such as this one, is bad, but the NV44 is worse, so it gets priority, and the way to come back to a question about recommending a new card is to ask for two main things, first the budget, and second, the default screen resolution he / she hopes to run at.
It's not a Geforce, although it's usually related to one or another of them, but with differing BIOS data and very different drivers, since it is intended for creating 3D graohics, not for viewing 3D animations. For some reason, the software won't let me edit my comments. I looked up that Quadro, and found that it's the NV44, which equates to the 6200TC, a really awful Geforce, worse in its own way for graphics than that Pentium P4 for a central processing unit.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=194&card2=354

It's got roughly 25% of the performance of the "Practical" minimum card from nVIDIA. This isn't a dual-socket system, I'm relatively certain.

I had a similar (slightly more recent model, I bought it 2nd hand as an emergency purchase) Dell Precision workstation, and I have to warn you that when I put a slightly better graphics card in it (that required its own power) the PSU could not handle it (don't forget you've also got 2 CPUs and if it's the same as mine that awful noisy double air extraction unit), fans stopped running, and the thing kept overheating and shutting down and the graphics card didn't last long. And of course the PSU couldn't be easily upgraded because it wasn't ATX, if it's anything like mine you can't fit an ATX power supply in the case, the fans couldn't be upgraded for a reasonable price because the CPU sockets were too close together to fit standard CPU fans... blah blah blah the list goes on.

So before running out and buying a new graphics card, do check that you're not going to be in the same position as I was. That PC has now been thrown out and I'm very wary of Dell now because of it.

Dell power supplies are usually overspecified, and under-rated compared to Acer, Compaq, HP, Sony, etc.

Dell enclosures and cooling ducting is unusual, and doesn't encourage upgraders, so cases typically need replacing during even a casual bit of updating. Replacement Dell-compatible power supplies of acceptable quality are available at competitive costs to ATX units, but you have to take care of where you order them from to avoid getting junk, which is another point in favor of discarding the Dell case.

TTBOMK, an actual twin-socketed P4 system would be described differently in the DxDiag than this one. It seems to be a P4D instead.

I hadn't seen a BSOD in years, in fact I figured them a thing of the past. This game has proven me wrong. I don't understand why I can run any other current game on very high with no problems, and this one runs like it hates me.
