New Vegas for Xbox or PC?

Post » Sun Dec 13, 2009 2:54 am

Should I get the New Vegas Series for the Xbox or PC? I'm not totally sure because if you get it for the PC you can do mods but then the computer wears down and for the Xbox you can't really do anything like make your own maps and such. I'm really on the verge of buying the computer game but I'm thinking about how much it would cost in the long run (Getting computer upgrade and other things). Are there any other things I should be concerned about either the Xbox 360 or PC?

Dont listen to the pc's!

Sure theres modding and the patch already out but with console:

1) No steam :D
2) No 6 gig install to clutter up pc
3) I dont know what pc users talk about when they say "Mouse r bettar controlz". They arnt. Console controllers ftw.
4) No being dissapointed that your comp cant even run it smooth on lowest settings with everything turned off.

Hardware wise console would be cheaper

You can install Fallout: NV on the 360 console HDD cutting down on loading and lag hence like on a PC

For long plays it's more relaxing using a controller while sitting on your sofa couch/chair

If you have decent HD TV that's also a plus factor

Yes we probably have the best computer you can get at the stores and yes it is a fast computer but yet... steam svcks. It is slow and crappy. Thanks for the reminders. My sister just reminded me too. :)

XBOX 360 FTW!!! I'll get it a month after I get Fable 3. Don't want to waste my money on all the new games this month.

Thanks.

i) yep, modding. this should be a selling point, really...
1) This is a good point... assuming you don't have steam for almost everything else you play (and have never had troubles with it)
2) Wrong. Unless you enjoy 3 minute loading times, it's 6gb on your console vs 6gb on your PC
3) This is entirely opinion and muscle memory. Invalid.
4) Yea, if you don't have the hardware how can you expect it to run nice? (the NPC framerate bug will get stomped...)
5) Depends on context. I don't even have a TV, so it's far more convenient to play on my PC!

There's a few things you could debate here:
1. To be honest I agree with this
2. The 6Gigs you won't spend on your computer will be spent on the console, not that much of a difference overall.
3. Personal choice, if you want to plug in a controller to your computer the xbox controllers do this fine, you just might need to configure things a bit.
4. It depends on the computer, I have every on very high and get no performance issues, but the OP sounds like he might have the occasional hiccup.
5. You should buy what does fit your convenience, console or computer, play on what you feel most comfortable with.

In your case, it sounds like it would be cheaper to get it for a console, but if it's possible I'd say go for the computer version if you can. Mods are the number one reason why I play these types of games, heck I still play Oblivion because of mods as it brings it up-to-par/beyond games today. The wonders of mods brings these types of games beyond way beyond expectation, and was a major selling point for me.

PC, definately, if you're hardware can handle it. So much more convenient. Plus mods, better graphics (depending on hardware), etc. And, if it's like OB and FO3, if you can't stand mouse and keyboard controls you can hook up a wired 360 controller to play it with.

So if you have the hardware, there's no reason not to get it for PC. And believe me, the Steam thing is not near as big a deal as people are saying it is.

Opinion respected (altho mouse does have much greater accuracy, thats a fact), but according to professional reviewers the PC version is far better.

Hey, we're not just pc's. We're real warm blooded people with feelings just like you consolers.

3) I dont know what pc users talk about when they say "Mouse r bettar controlz". They arnt. Console controllers ftw.

For some games controllers kick kb/mouse azz (such as Street Fighter or Tekken) but say for FPS the mouse/kb gives an advantage. The Halo guys must have thought the same because I read the reason they separated the online xBox Halo from the Windows Live Halo version was because of the unfair advantage kb/mouse users had over the controller users.

5. CONVENIENCE. CONVENIENCE. CONVENIENCE!

Developers! Developers! Developers!

But back to the main question. Go PC if you have an awesome PC or if your xBox TV is a small low res one from the 90s. If you don't have a good PC or if you have an awesome good res TV then go console.

Those are my 2 cents

PC has to win if you're only getting one.
One thing changes everything, the mods. Can you get awesome mods on a console? Nope.

Everything else is a moot point when you consider that.

For me I've got Morrowind, Oblivion and FO3 on PC and console and since I started playing them on PC, I've not once even wanted to touch the console versions.

Personally I'm getting it for PC and 360.
PC for the actual game, then 360 for achievements and the ease of just slumping down with a controller.

For me it has to be PC.

All other considerations aside (and I don't have Steamphobia unlike some folks, I have been using Steam for ages), it comes down to modding - not that I do much of it myself, but there are some people out there who are really talented and prolific. Look at it this way, I am still playing Morrowind 8 years after its release, which is due to mods (which are still being written and released after all this time in huge quantity) which improve and change the quests, gameplay, and look of the game almost beyond recognition, adding new areas of land, NPCs, quests etc etc, I can even run a program alongside it that updates the graphics to make it look like a recent release. I can't think of many console releases that give you quite that much replayability and value for money. So my vote is for PC, that one factor eclipses everything else IMO.

I say PC for this reason. Due to invisible walls, I know that there will be Mods to remove many of these. On the other hand, I can't say that Oblivion will be kind enough to patch the 360 version to remove the Invisible Walls. If I had known that they would have been as bad as they are in this game, I would have gotten the PC version.

... I CAN'T DECIDE!!!! I'm going for the Xbox360. I'm prone to messing up software on the computer... so I'll stick with the Xbox360. I've got a awesome in think 52 inch Samsung Flat Screen and a sound bar with HDMI cables and HD Mics and the new Slim Xbox. I've also got this awesome Gatway Computer. I don't think they have it in stores anymore though. Well I'll describe it any ways. It has 1 terrabyte with a i5 or i7 core with I think a 5870 HD Ati Radeon card and some other stuff I don't understand. I defeninitly can't find it on Bestbuy anymore. Sorry for any bad spelling or grammer.

I just have to go with the opposite of the PC. Idk why. My guy feeling I guess? Idk. Well anyways I think I would rather be perched in my comfy couch playing New Vegas and talking to my friends rather than trying to figure out how to mod without any body on the PC. My opinion. Although I do respect everybodies opinion above and below.

I can't even play a shooter with the mouse either. I also don't want to get used to it.

You bought a prebuilt gaming computer?
You prefer your XBOX to it?
You can't install a game with STEAM's comprehensive GUI?
You don't know you can run a HDMI from your PC to your TV?
You can't mod a game that supports it?
You prefer an xbox controller to a keyboard and mouse, and fail to realize you can just use your 360 controller with your PC?

Sure is casual in here.

I didn't read all the posts but you can't beat a keyboard and mouse as a FPS control combo. Hands down that is more than enough reason to get it on PC.

I'm not going to comment on the rest of your post, simply because it made me giggle (sorry, no offense intended, you sound about as PC-savvy as my husband who once managed to delete part of the Operating System by mistake then retired to bed leaving me to sort it out!!!) but honestly I do understand that point, I think once you're used to a particular type of controller, whether it's a console pad or mouse & keyboard, it can be really hard to adjust. I find xbox controllers impossible because it requires too much thumb movement and I have arthritis in my thumb joints so that's a complete no-no for me (one of the 'joys' of being a middle-aged gamer) - very little thumb power required gaming with a keyboard and mouse however, I can play for hours with no pain so I'm not switching away from that for anything.

If you got the PC version you could still rig up your PC to display on the tv, and use a 360 style controller, and sit on your sofa :)

I got it for the PC. The first couple of hours I was using keyboard & mouse on my laptop. After that I hooked up my xbox 360 controller and hooked up my laptop to my hd projector. It's indistinguishable from playing it on an xbox, really, as far as I'm concerned.

I will say that this game's controls are clearly designed for a console controller. I found keyboard and mouse to be annoyingly clunky...especially with dialog -- since there's no hotkey to exit out of dialog, I'd have to scroll all the way down in that little dialog box every time I needed to exit dialog (often). Inventory management is pretty annoying with keyboard & mouse too.

So, in short, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend going with the PC version, but only if you have a 360 controller to hook up to your PC.

I see you've pretty much already made your decision, but I'll post what I was going to anyway, since I've already got half of it typed up.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is do you have a good enough PC to run the game (from the way you described yours, it sounds pretty good to me).

Next, you want to ask yourself if you're willing to use Steam. (it's really not hard at all. You buy the game at a retailer or off Steam, you install it, and the installation process guides you through everything. All in all it took me about 5 minutes to start installing the game, and i don't even use Steam that much.)

That's basically all you really need. Then just come the perks:

With the PC, you have the ability to fix bugs with mods/console commands/the construction kit that you wouldn't have on the 360.
You can add almost anything you can think of to the game using mods. Literally. And you don't have to know how to make them. Just download the mods others make.
On the PC, you can choose between using a 360 controller or a keyboard and mouse.

Sure, in all it is a bit more complicated than just putting the disc in and playing like you would on the 360, but overall I feel it's a much more rewarding experience.

I have an old computer. I spent my money on my 360 and love it. I don't want to throw a bunch of money at a computer that can run NV. I miss not having mods though. Overall the PC version i am sure is better, but the 360 version is a ton of fun already.

if your computer can handle it then pc is a no brainer. you can plugin an xbox controller into you pc and you can also hook up you computer to an HDTV from your pc with a simple cord. ive seen fallout 3 on both consoles and pc and there is simply no contest. the game looks damn fugly on a console now and your draw distance is obscenely short. i can never figure out why some people claim controllers are better for FPS games...........there is a reason that many games today have longer reaction times between enemies seeing you and attacking you and its specifically to address the longer amount of time it takes to aim with a controller. and dont get me started on the auto-aim which lets you hit targets even if you cursor isnt on them. im really noticing this now with new vegas and i cant wait till they get a no auto-aim mod out.

im not sure about the wearing out the hardware thing since consoles are notorious for overheating and breaking all the time.

mods is a huge issue especially texture mods which will make a huge difference to the game. i played fallout 3 with texture replacers for so long that i was aghast at how awful new vegas looked when i started playing it even though i had all settings maxed.

most pcs have more HD space than consoles and they also tend to have faster drives which effects load times.

its an old engine so you dont need top notch equipment...........in fact it will look better on an older midrange computer than on a console. remember xbox 360 and PS3 are 5 years old now which is an eternity in PC hardware. weve gone through 4 different generations of graphics cards now with each generation being roughly twice as powerful as the last. the consoles are seriously holding gaming graphics back to the stone ages now. i really hope there is some super secret project by sony or microsoft that is nearing completion cause its getting ridiculous how nerfed games have to be to run on consoles.

i agree with this since my second ps3 just died on me (and dont say its cuz ps3's are horrible, xbox's dont die...your wrong, i know a few people who are going on there 3rd or 4th xbox due to RROD)

i say go with the PC version

i play games on my ps3 and on my pc and i gotta say i have a better time on the pc more then the ps3

from what i have been reading on the forums, the consoles and the pc's do have bug issues, but the consoles seem to have the worst bugs (please correct me on that if im wrong)

with the pc version there are community patches that u can download to give a temp fix to certain bugs until an offical patch has come out
(i personally havent downloaded any yet since i have yet to have any glitch/bug problem)

yes u can use an xbox 360 controller, but i recommend you try a keyboard and mouse, dont get the pc version only to use the 360 controller instead, that would be a waste, try keyboard and mouse first
it took me awhile to get used to it and i honestly gotta say my aiming is alot better then a console controller
