New Vegas mod for Fallout 3

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:25 pm

Obsidian can use any bloody assets they want that they bought and paid for.

Did they actually pay for those assets? It was my impression that Obsidian was under contract by Bethesda to produce the game for them, not that they acquired the rights to it. As such all assets will still be the property of Bethesda, not Obsidian. And any new content that Obsidian produces will be owned by Bethesda as well.

In that case it will be written in to the contract that they have permission to use the assets and that permission will be figured into how much Obsidian gets paid for their work.

The point, obviously, is that business contracts have absolutely no bearing on the rules that are applied to modders. Business contracts can be written to accomplish nearly anything as long as all parties are involved and suitably compensated to their own requirements.

Do you really think Obsidian would make a tooootally new game, based in the same universe, using the same engine, and not use textures and models used in a game two years ago?

They were too busy to make everything new because they were so busy making that spy game...oh...wait...Maybe they should invest time in one game at a time.

The point we're trying to make is that if alot of the assets have been taken whole-sale from Fo3 into NV (which both Andy and I confirmed at least Some are), then it may be possible to port over some mods from Fo3 to NV simply by changing the FormIDs to the NV-version. This stays within the spirit of the copyright laws/rules about not using other game content in a NV-mod. Now clearly there will be ALOT of items that were not ported over, but who knows? We wont know for sure how much of the Fo3 assets were taken in.

My plan at this point is to try and convert the mod I'm working on into one that can work in the NV game world. It will mean building-up a database of FormID matches between Fo3 and NV, and then writing a program to switch them out. Clearly it will take a fair amount of work to match-up items between the two databases (where possible), and with luck it will be a HUGE job because NV will have ported alot of items over - the more the marrier! My plan may be utterly rendered futile if we find out that very few items were ported over, but I'm not thinking that will be the case. Obsidian had precious little time to build NV, and I'm _Hoping_ that it will have forced them to port-over alot of common objects and focus their modellers/artists time on the custom assets needed to make New Vegas look like Vegas. This is my thought at this point, and if my wish comes true, I will be taking on the task of building a mod converter for Fo3-NV (at least for cells/objects).

All we can do is wait for the release, and see how stuffed the object database is when we open the package. The new game will be great and all, but the NV-GECK will be very much like Christmas for me. :)

All this reminds me of the movie Brazil. Very odd from the Monty Python crew.

You need to get a contract to wipes your [censored] lol

But not the modders at least =)

Mine too, which is why I turned to writing Memories while I wait for the release.. and restart the mod when the new geck arrives.

Heya Andy!

This is cool actually, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is thinking about doing this. :) I've already started to put together some ideas on the white-board about how I plan to automate the Fo3/NV asset comparison database - its going to be a long wait until October 19th!

Rest assured though, if its possible to do then I will be doing it. Code is what I'm the Most comfortable at doing as I do it for a living (though I enjoy level design/modelling/art alot more), and I've come way Way too far on this project to give it up or rush it out the door before NV!

Lets just hope and pray that NV decided to use/port Many of the Fo3 assets over! B)

The joke is that a New Vegas mod is a silly idea because New Vegas is coming out, they would both be the same thing. That's it. Simple, well delivered (by Echo), entertaining.
You can try and pull the 'above it all' act to save face, but it's not classy.

(Sidenote: Go into a writer's forum and complain about humour using misnomers and ambiguity and see how far that gets you)

This was hilarious (not TTT, I mean what happened). Haven't seen people fall for these jokes since, I don't know when.

On the other hand ... if there is enough room on the DVD, why should they remove unused items?

I was just about to suggest an automated approach :) Naturally, it could be complicated if the nif format has changed from FO3 to NV.

Here's something I was personally curious about. I wanted to port all of my weapons I made for Fallout 3 into NV in one easy package. However I'm not totally sure that NV will have the animations and weapon bases for me to port them over (I used the sniper rifle as a base for my SVD and the assault rifle base for my ACR and the MP5s). Will most if not all of the vanilla weapons from F3 be included in NV? Or will I have to find a new way to import them?

Everything I've seen says "X new weapons!" rather than "X weapons" so I assume the originals are in. Their animations almost certainly will be, given how generically useful they are.

@Zumbs and TalkieToaster,

That would be Fantastic if they just include the original object databases and add to them. The only reason I worried that this wasn't the case, is because the moderators told us specifically that "Like other games, we do not allow content from one game to be used in another.." (to paraphrase), which is what I normally would expect them to say. However, if they did indeed simply add-to the existing Fo3 object database without removing anything, then effectively we Will be able to use the same content as everything from Fo3 will be in the NV database.

In actual fact I do think they would have taken-out the old quests, the old NPCs and dialogue, none of which we would find in NV and to keep it in would just clutter-up the GECK with tons of stuff that will never be in NV. So I'm fairly certain they will have removed Some things, but I will be _Extremely_ happy if they do simply keep the Objects and add-more, perhaps simply renumbering the FormIDs or something? Clearly we wont have the DLC databases, so I suspect any DLC asset from Fo3 will Not be included in the NV release. Thus anything with a DLC object will have to change if we want to port that in, but I do wonder if some of the Broken Steel assets don't find their way into McCarren airport none the less.

We'll see, but the answer to that question will determine wether or not folks like me with un-attached world spaces can port un-finished work right into the NV engine with perhaps only a change of the FormIDs (if any of those change).

Hopeful!

Yep thats new for me, thanks for sharing! :goodjob:

If I'm reading this right, it gives me more hope. :) I see alot of Fo3 weapons listed in the New Vegas list.

At this point I'm just hoping they copy the basic objects; the statics, moveable statics and other common clutter items (some of which we know). I'm convinced that many models were brought over, and even if its only a partial transfer from Fo3 to NV, I'm still committed to making the conversion to the NV engine. Even if 30% of the models get transferred, it will mean a month or two of heavy retrofitting to either make my own models to replace the critical ones I need, or adjusting things to use NV models accordingly. I figure I will still come out ahead in the end even if I have to convert Most of the models I used.

Its all GECKulation for the GECKinators until either they say or we get the ESMs on game-day. Funny thing is I'm not sure what I will do first now... Before there would be no question, I would play and play and play until I was sick of it before even thinking of modding. Now, I may start tearing the ESM apart before even starting the game (lol).

It is all clear to me now. ha ha ha

My initial, admittedly knee-jerk, reaction was the mistaken impression that his post was the same sort of sycophancy that is common on these forums. When you see posts by some modders who seriously announce that Bethesda Softworks is copying their work for New Vegas along with smitten mod fans pandering to that conceit by telling them that Bethesda can't do it right and that modders are needed for them to "fix their games". then you might understand how I could have missed "the joke". BTW, their games are selling quite well on platforms that do not accept our mods and the platform game sections of retail stores that I visit seem to be getting larger while PC Game sections are shrinking. Best to remain realistic about the importance of mods, even as we enjoy them. Those people who work at Bethesda have a lot of talent in their own right and by the way, working on one game at a time is also called "putting all of your eggs in one basket". No company that wants to survive will do it.

Yes the OP's question was a little absurd, which is why I tuned into the thread to begin with. Why mod New Vegas before it is released without access to the game's asset's? If you are going to all that trouble then why not mod FALLOUT 3 - London? Might be fun to see ghouls in the House of Lords. Or would they even be noticed?

@Talkie Toaster: Learning to be "above it all" when it comes to derision is as classy as I get. It has also dramatically reduced the number of times that I am charged with Grevious Bodily Harm. One should question the survival skills of someone who refuses to allow a man to back out of "the spot" without one last jab. One might also question whether the pretense of being on the "in crowd" making fun of absurd yet sincere questions without making any attempt to answer them respectfully is "classy".

Kudos to the people who actually took time to answer his question that:

No, no one seems to be working on an erzatz New Vegas, but wait a few months and you will be swimming in real New Vegas mods. I am looking forward to it. Patience, so difficult.

Am I correct in assuming that FOSE will have to be partially or completely rebuilt before it's useful on New Vegas due to the updated EXE file? Does it depend on how much has been changed (and I'm assuming some has due to the inclusion of hardcoe mode if nothing else), or does it require a total reconstruction for any changes?

Ahaha, 'subtle' threats? Oh man, I sure will rethink my 'faulty survival instincts' now I know I'm dealing with a dangerous loose cannon who might fly off the rails into GBH-terrority if anyone points out that his trying to blame not getting a joke on the 90% of other people who did get it is perhaps a little ingracious? You really need to learn to take yourself less seriously, mate.

I've seen IanPatt in some of the New Vegas threads, so I assume he's going to redo FOSE. I'd guess some pretty severe reworking will be needed, given Steamworks is now in there somewhere, all the new things they've added will have shuffled the addresses around, all the weapon forms will have a bunch of extra fields to govern weapon mods and the like- it'll probably be quicker than Oblivion->Fallout, but slower than in between Fallout patches. If we're lucky though all the new fields will just be appended to the end of the existing forms so "30 bits after the start of the weapon form" will still be where you find damage or something so functions can be ported across once they figure out how big the new form is and where all the new locations to hook into are.

The big question is if we get xSE Lite like Fallout 3 has, or xSE Premium like Oblivion, and if the game will have an easily-accessible way of storing forms in the save the xSE team can hook to produce a version of cloneForm that isn't temporary- tempCloneForm is a bit of a bugger.

Given that the FOSE team had to make new versions for each patch, I would expect it to need at least a partial rebuild.

Edit: Didn't see TheTalkieToaster's reply before writing one myself

Unkind? I don't recall blaming anyone because I didn't get a joke, only that I didn't think it was funny. It was droll, at best. But if some form of contrition is necessary then... "You da man!"

Looks like I'm not the only one who can't recognise a joke. Did you also think that I seriously meant that modding ghouls into the House of Lords wouldn't be noticed because there are already so many old mutants there that it would be redundant to add more? Well.. alright, I did mean to imply that, but threatening people on forums has got to be the most pathetically impotent and ban-worthy post possible, and I don't indulge in net hunting. Except for that one guy in Scottsdale, Arizona... and I was young and immature and I've paid my debt to society. Now I have been rehabilitated to be a greater threat to myself than anyone else, just like normal folks.

Taking ourselves and our mods too seriously was something of a theme in my posts. Humility never hurt anyone. Don't you agree, sport?

You've already made yourself look foolish Bad Penny, give it up. You're only managing to make things worse for yourself.

If I've made myself look foolish then it is only because I AM a fool, but then that is part of the human condition. Many fools fail to recognize that.

Made things worse for myself? Heheh...Now THAT is funny!

My God, you still don't get it do you? I'd really like to add some more comments here but I'd no doubt be reprimanded for flaming. Best that I simply put you on my ignore list. You're obviously so self-obsessed that you can't have anything meaningful to add to a discussion anyway. And you're incredibly dense to boot.
