New Vid Card Crashing

Post » Fri Oct 09, 2009 1:38 am

Ok, I was using an ATI HD 2400 Pro that required I play Oblivion on Low settings.

I "upgraded" to a BioStar ATI HD 5750 card, and the trouble just began. Now Oblivion detects my hardware to need to run on ultra low settings, looking worse than morrowind, and even then the game crashes when I try to start it.

The ATI Catalyst Control Center says i don't have the drivers installed, however, my Windows 7 and driver updater program say that my display drivers are up to date.

What the heck is going on and how can I fix it?

Try deleting the .ini file in your My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder....it is the confiugration settings file named Oblivion. Then restart up the game and a new one will get regenerated acccording to your latest hardware config. See if things improve

Can also try reinstalling video card drivers.

The Radeon 5750 actually should not be detected by the Oblivion launcher because it was made well after the game's release and last patch...it will just default everything to medium. You can always manually adjust settings to be higher too. The card is going to pretty much max out the game up to an extent, but I do wonder if your power supply is sufficient for the upgrade you just made.

If nothing please Post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista or Win 7, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

It is the same problem I have with my 5770 ---- ATI 57xx series cards are autodetected by the game as old NVIDIA FX57xx series cards and those had shader implementation problems and are the reason the patch added the Ultra-low setting in the first place !!

To fix it up use the launcher and press the ultra high check box (this reenables the shaders that have been turned off ) and then launch the game and adjust as needed in the options menu ! (NOTE: each time you update your video drivers you will need to redo this !)
